1 H e entered Jericho and was passing through.

And having entered, he was passing through Jericho,

2 A nd there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.

and lo, a man, by name called Zaccheus, and he was a chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich,

3 Z accheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.

and he was seeking to see Jesus, who he is, and was not able for the multitude, because in stature he was small,

4 S o he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.

and having run forward before, he went up on a sycamore, that he may see him, because through that he was about to pass by.

5 W hen Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”

And as Jesus came up to the place, having looked up, he saw him, and said unto him, `Zaccheus, having hastened, come down, for to-day in thy house it behoveth me to remain;'

6 A nd he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.

and he having hastened did come down, and did receive him rejoicing;

7 W hen they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

and having seen, they were all murmuring, saying -- `With a sinful man he went in to lodge!'

8 Z accheus stopped and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.”

And Zaccheus having stood, said unto the Lord, `Lo, the half of my goods, sir, I give to the poor, and if of any one anything I did take by false accusation, I give back fourfold.'

9 A nd Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.

And Jesus said unto him -- `To-day salvation did come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham;

10 F or the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Parable of Money Usage

for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.'

11 W hile they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.

And while they are hearing these things, having added he spake a simile, because of his being nigh to Jerusalem, and of their thinking that the reign of God is about presently to be made manifest.

12 S o He said, “ A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.

He said therefore, `A certain man of birth went on to a far country, to take to himself a kingdom, and to return,

13 A nd he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Do business with this until I come back.’

and having called ten servants of his own, he gave to them ten pounds, and said unto them, Do business -- till I come;

14 B ut his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’

and his citizens were hating him, and did send an embassy after him, saying, We do not wish this one to reign over us.

15 W hen he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.

`And it came to pass, on his coming back, having taken the kingdom, that he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he gave the money, that he might know what any one had done in business.

16 T he first appeared, saying, ‘ Master, your mina has made ten minas more.’

`And the first came near, saying, Sir, thy pound did gain ten pounds;

17 A nd he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’

and he said to him, Well done, good servant, because in a very little thou didst become faithful, be having authority over ten cities.

18 T he second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, has made five minas.’

`And the second came, saying, Sir, thy pound made five pounds;

19 A nd he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’

and he said also to this one, And thou, become thou over five cities.

20 A nother came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;

`And another came, saying, Sir, lo, thy pound, that I had lying away in a napkin;

21 f or I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’

for I was afraid of thee, because thou art an austere man; thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and reapest what thou didst not sow.

22 H e said to him, ‘ By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

`And he saith to him, Out of thy mouth I will judge thee, evil servant: thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow!

23 T hen why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?’

and wherefore didst thou not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, with interest might have received it?

24 T hen he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’

`And to those standing by he said, Take from him the pound, and give to him having the ten pounds --

25 A nd they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’

(and they said to him, Sir, he hath ten pounds) --

26 I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.

for I say to you, that to every one having shall be given, and from him not having, also what he hath shall be taken from him,

27 B ut these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.” Triumphal Entry

but those my enemies, who did not wish me to reign over them, bring hither and slay before me.'

28 A fter He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

And having said these things, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.

29 W hen He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,

And it came to pass, as he came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, unto the mount called of the Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30 s aying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.

having said, Go away to the village over-against, in which, entering into, ye shall find a colt bound, on which no one of men did ever sit, having loosed it, bring;

31 I f anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

and if any one doth question you, Wherefore do ye loose ? thus ye shall say to him -- The Lord hath need of it.'

32 S o those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.

And those sent, having gone away, found according as he said to them,

33 A s they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

and while they are loosing the colt, its owners said unto them, `Why loose ye the colt?'

34 T hey said, “The Lord has need of it.”

and they said, `The Lord hath need of it;'

35 T hey brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.

and they brought it unto Jesus, and having cast their garments upon the colt, they did set Jesus upon it.

36 A s He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.

And as he is going, they were spreading their garments in the way,

37 A s soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,

and as he is coming nigh now, at the descent of the mount of the Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a great voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

38 s houting: “ Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

saying, `blessed he who is coming, a king in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.'

39 S ome of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

And certain of the Pharisees from the multitude said unto him, `Teacher, rebuke thy disciples;'

40 B ut Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”

and he answering said to them, `I say to you, that, if these shall be silent, the stones will cry out!'

41 W hen He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,

And when he came nigh, having seen the city, he wept over it,

42 s aying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.

saying -- `If thou didst know, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things for thy peace; but now they were hid from thine eyes.

43 F or the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,

`Because days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast around thee a rampart, and compass thee round, and press thee on every side,

44 a nd they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Traders Driven from the Temple

and lay thee low, and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou didst not know the time of thy inspection.'

45 J esus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling,

And having entered into the temple, he began to cast forth those selling in it, and those buying,

46 s aying to them, “It is written, ‘ And My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a robbers ’ den.”

saying to them, `It hath been written, My house is a house of prayer -- but ye made it a den of robbers.'

47 A nd He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him,

And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him -- also the chiefs of the people --

48 a nd they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said.

and they were not finding what they shall do, for all the people were hanging on him, hearing him.
