Hebrews 4 ~ Hebrews 4

1 T herefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it.

We may fear, then, lest a promise being left of entering into His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short,

2 F or indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

for we also are having good news proclaimed, even as they, but the word heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard,

3 F or we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “ As I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest,” although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

for we do enter into the rest -- we who did believe, as He said, `So I sware in My anger, If they shall enter into My rest --;' and yet the works were done from the foundation of the world,

4 F or He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day: “ And God rested on the seventh day from all His works ”;

for He spake in a certain place concerning the seventh thus: `And God did rest in the seventh day from all His works;'

5 a nd again in this passage, “ They shall not enter My rest.”

and in this again, `If they shall enter into My rest --;'

6 T herefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience,

since then, it remaineth for certain to enter into it, and those who did first hear good news entered not in because of unbelief --

7 H e again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, “ Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”

again He doth limit a certain day, `To-day,' (in David saying, after so long a time,) as it hath been said, `To-day, if His voice ye may hear, ye may not harden your hearts,'

8 F or if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.

for if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;

9 S o there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God,

10 F or the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

for he who did enter into his rest, he also rested from his works, as God from His own.

11 T herefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.

May we be diligent, then, to enter into that rest, that no one in the same example of the unbelief may fall,

12 F or the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

for the reckoning of God is living, and working, and sharp above every two-edged sword, and piercing unto the dividing asunder both of soul and spirit, of joints also and marrow, and a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart;

13 A nd there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

and there is not a created thing not manifest before Him, but all things naked and open to His eyes -- with whom is our reckoning.

14 T herefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Having, then, a great chief priest passed through the heavens -- Jesus the Son of God -- may we hold fast the profession,

15 F or we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

for we have not a chief priest unable to sympathise with our infirmities, but tempted in all things in like manner -- apart from sin;

16 T herefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

we may come near, then, with freedom, to the throne of the grace, that we may receive kindness, and find grace -- for seasonable help.
