1 P oi Gesú, entrato in Gerico, l'attraversava;

And having entered, he was passing through Jericho,

2 e d ecco un uomo, chiamato Zaccheo il quale era il capo dei pubblicani ed era ricco.

and lo, a man, by name called Zaccheus, and he was a chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich,

3 E gli cercava di vedere chi fosse Gesú, ma non poteva a motivo della folla, perché era piccolo di statura.

and he was seeking to see Jesus, who he is, and was not able for the multitude, because in stature he was small,

4 A llora corse avanti e salí su un sicomoro per vederlo, perché egli doveva passare di là.

and having run forward before, he went up on a sycamore, that he may see him, because through that he was about to pass by.

5 E , quando Gesú arrivò in quel luogo alzò gli occhi, lo vide e gli disse: «Zaccheo, scendi giú subito, perché oggi devo fermarmi in casa tua».

And as Jesus came up to the place, having looked up, he saw him, and said unto him, `Zaccheus, having hastened, come down, for to-day in thy house it behoveth me to remain;'

6 E d egli scese in fretta e lo ricevette con gioia.

and he having hastened did come down, and did receive him rejoicing;

7 V edendo ciò, tutti mormoravano, dicendo: «Egli è andato ad alloggiare in casa di un uomo peccatore».

and having seen, they were all murmuring, saying -- `With a sinful man he went in to lodge!'

8 M a Zaccheo si alzò e disse al Signore: «Signore, io do la metà dei miei beni ai poveri e, se ho defraudato qualcuno di qualcosa, gli restituirò quattro volte tanto».

And Zaccheus having stood, said unto the Lord, `Lo, the half of my goods, sir, I give to the poor, and if of any one anything I did take by false accusation, I give back fourfold.'

9 E Gesú gli disse: «Oggi la salvezza è entrata in questa casa, perché anche costui è figlio d'Abrahamo.

And Jesus said unto him -- `To-day salvation did come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham;

10 P erché il Figlio dell'uomo è venuto a cercare e a salvare ciò che era perduto».

for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.'

11 E , mentre essi ascoltavano queste cose, Gesú proseguí a raccontare una parabola, perché era vicino a Gerusalemme, ed essi pensavano che il regno di Dio dovesse manifestarsi subito.

And while they are hearing these things, having added he spake a simile, because of his being nigh to Jerusalem, and of their thinking that the reign of God is about presently to be made manifest.

12 D isse dunque: «Un uomo nobile andò in un paese lontano, per ricevere l'investitura di un regno e poi tornare.

He said therefore, `A certain man of birth went on to a far country, to take to himself a kingdom, and to return,

13 E , chiamati a sé dieci suoi servi, diede loro dieci mine, e disse loro: "Trafficate fino al mio ritorno".

and having called ten servants of his own, he gave to them ten pounds, and said unto them, Do business -- till I come;

14 M a i suoi cittadini lo odiavano e gli mandarono dietro un'ambasciata, dicendo: "Non vogliamo che costui regni su di noi".

and his citizens were hating him, and did send an embassy after him, saying, We do not wish this one to reign over us.

15 O ra, quando fu di ritorno, dopo aver ricevuto l'investitura del regno fece chiamare quei servi ai quali aveva dato il denaro per sapere quanto ciascuno avesse guadagnato trafficando.

`And it came to pass, on his coming back, having taken the kingdom, that he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he gave the money, that he might know what any one had done in business.

16 A llora si fece avanti il primo e disse: "Signore, la tua mina ha fruttato altre dieci mine";

`And the first came near, saying, Sir, thy pound did gain ten pounds;

17 e d egli disse: "Bene, servo buono poiché sei stato fedele in cosa minima, ricevi il governo su dieci città

and he said to him, Well done, good servant, because in a very little thou didst become faithful, be having authority over ten cities.

18 V enne poi il secondo, dicendo: "Signore, la tua mina ha fruttato altre cinque mine";

`And the second came, saying, Sir, thy pound made five pounds;

19 e d egli disse anche a costui: "Tu pure sii capo di cinque città".

and he said also to this one, And thou, become thou over five cities.

20 V enne poi un altro, che disse: "Signore, ecco la tua mina che ho tenuta riposta in un fazzoletto

`And another came, saying, Sir, lo, thy pound, that I had lying away in a napkin;

21 p erché ho avuto paura di te, che sei un uomo severo; tu prendi ciò che non hai depositato e mieti ciò che non hai seminato".

for I was afraid of thee, because thou art an austere man; thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and reapest what thou didst not sow.

22 E il suo signore gli disse: "Ti giudicherò dalle tue stesse parole, malvagio servo; tu sapevi che sono un uomo duro, che prendo ciò che non ho depositato e mieto ciò che non ho seminato;

`And he saith to him, Out of thy mouth I will judge thee, evil servant: thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow!

23 p erché non hai depositato il mio denaro in banca; cosí, al mio ritorno, lo avrei riscosso con l'interesse?"

and wherefore didst thou not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, with interest might have received it?

24 D isse poi ai presenti: "Toglietegli la mina e datela a colui che ha dieci mine".

`And to those standing by he said, Take from him the pound, and give to him having the ten pounds --

25 E d essi gli dissero: "Signore, egli ha dieci mine".

(and they said to him, Sir, he hath ten pounds) --

26 " Poiché io vi dico che a chi ha sarà dato; ma a chi non ha sarà tolto anche quello che ha.

for I say to you, that to every one having shall be given, and from him not having, also what he hath shall be taken from him,

27 I noltre, conducete qui i miei nemici, che non hanno voluto che io regnassi su di loro e uccideteli alla mia presenza.

but those my enemies, who did not wish me to reign over them, bring hither and slay before me.'

28 D opo aver detto queste cose, egli andava avanti salendo a Gerusalemme.

And having said these things, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.

29 E , come fu vicino a Betfage e a Betania, presso il monte detto degli Ulivi, mandò due dei suoi discepoli,

And it came to pass, as he came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, unto the mount called of the Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30 d icendo: «Andate nel villaggio di fronte, entrando nel quale troverete un puledro di asino legato, su cui nessun uomo è mai salito; scioglietelo e conducetelo qui.

having said, Go away to the village over-against, in which, entering into, ye shall find a colt bound, on which no one of men did ever sit, having loosed it, bring;

31 E se qualcuno vi domanda perché lo sciogliete, direte loro cosí: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno"».

and if any one doth question you, Wherefore do ye loose ? thus ye shall say to him -- The Lord hath need of it.'

32 E quelli che erano stati mandati andarono e trovarono come egli aveva loro detto.

And those sent, having gone away, found according as he said to them,

33 E , mentre scioglievano il puledro, i suoi padroni dissero loro: «Perché sciogliete il puledro?».

and while they are loosing the colt, its owners said unto them, `Why loose ye the colt?'

34 E d essi dissero: «Il Signore ne ha bisogno».

and they said, `The Lord hath need of it;'

35 L o condussero allora da Gesú e, gettate le loro vesti sopra il puledro, vi fecero montare Gesú.

and they brought it unto Jesus, and having cast their garments upon the colt, they did set Jesus upon it.

36 E , mentre egli avanzava, stendevano le loro vesti sulla strada.

And as he is going, they were spreading their garments in the way,

37 E , quando egli fu vicino alla discesa del monte degli Ulivi, tutta la folla dei discepoli iniziò con gioia a lodare Dio a gran voce per tutte le opere potenti che avevano visto,

and as he is coming nigh now, at the descent of the mount of the Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a great voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

38 d icendo: «Benedetto il Re che viene nel nome del Signore; pace in cielo e gloria nei luoghi altissimi».

saying, `blessed he who is coming, a king in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.'

39 E alcuni farisei fra la folla gli dissero: «Maestro, sgrida i tuoi discepoli!».

And certain of the Pharisees from the multitude said unto him, `Teacher, rebuke thy disciples;'

40 E d egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Io vi dico che se costoro tacessero, griderebbero le pietre».

and he answering said to them, `I say to you, that, if these shall be silent, the stones will cry out!'

41 E come egli si avvicinava, vide la città e pianse a su di essa,

And when he came nigh, having seen the city, he wept over it,

42 d icendo: «Oh, se tu, proprio tu, avessi riconosciuto almeno in questo tuo giorno le cose necessarie alla tua pace! Ma ora esse sono nascoste agli occhi tuoi.

saying -- `If thou didst know, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things for thy peace; but now they were hid from thine eyes.

43 P oiché verranno sopra di te dei giorni in cui i tuoi nemici ti circonderanno di trincee, ti accerchieranno e ti assedieranno da ogni parte.

`Because days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast around thee a rampart, and compass thee round, and press thee on every side,

44 E abbatteranno te e i tuoi figli dentro di te; e non lasceranno in te pietra su pietra perché tu non hai riconosciuto il tempo in cui sei stata visitata».

and lay thee low, and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou didst not know the time of thy inspection.'

45 P oi, entrato nel tempio, cominciò a cacciarne fuori coloro che vendevano e comperavano,

And having entered into the temple, he began to cast forth those selling in it, and those buying,

46 d icendo loro: «Sta scritto: "La mia casa è casa di preghiera, ma voi ne avete fatto un covo di ladroni"».

saying to them, `It hath been written, My house is a house of prayer -- but ye made it a den of robbers.'

47 O gni giorno egli insegnava nel tempio. E i capi dei sacerdoti, gli scribi e i capi del popolo cercavano di farlo morire.

And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him -- also the chiefs of the people --

48 M a non riuscivano a decidere che cosa fare, perché tutto il popolo lo ascoltava pendendo dalle sue labbra.

and they were not finding what they shall do, for all the people were hanging on him, hearing him.
