1 N on portare invidia ai malvagi e non desiderare di stare con loro,

Be not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

2 p erché il loro cuore medita rapine e le loro labbra parlano di fare del male.

For destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

3 L a casa si edifica con la sapienza e si rende stabile con la prudenza.

By wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

4 C on la conoscenza si riempiono le stanze di ogni sorta di beni preziosi e gradevoli.

And by knowledge the inner parts are filled, all precious and pleasant wealth.

5 L 'uomo saggio è pieno di forza, e l'uomo che ha conoscenza accresce la sua potenza.

Mighty the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

6 P erché con saggi consigli potrai fare la tua guerra, e nel gran numero di consiglieri c'è vittoria.

For by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance in a multitude of counsellors.

7 L a sapienza è troppo alta per lo stolto, egli non apre mai la bocca alla porta della città.

Wisdom high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

8 C hi pensa di fare il male sarà chiamato maestro di intrighi.

Whoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

9 I l pensiero di stoltezza è peccato e lo schernitore è un abominio per gli uomini.

The thought of folly sin, And an abomination to man a scorner.

10 S e vieni meno nel giorno dell'avversità, la tua forza è molto poca.

Thou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

11 L ibera quelli che sono trascinati verso la morte e trattieni quelli che sono portati al macello.

If delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

12 S e dici: «Ecco, noi non lo sapevamo». Colui che pesa i cuori non lo vede? Colui che custodisce la tua anima non lo sa forse? Egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere

When thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

13 F iglio mio, mangia il miele perché è buono; un favo di miele sarà dolce al tuo palato.

Eat my son, honey that good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

14 C osí sarà la conoscenza della sapienza per la tua anima. Se la trovi, ci sarà un futuro e la tua speranza non sarà distrutta.

So the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

15 O empio, non insidiare la dimora del giusto, non devastare il suo luogo di riposo,

Lay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

16 p erché il giusto cade sette volte e si rialza, ma gli empi sono travolti nella sventura.

For seven doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

17 Q uando il tuo nemico cade, non rallegrarti; quando è atterrato, il tuo cuore non gioisca,

In the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

18 p erché l'Eterno non veda e gli dispiaccia e non allontani da lui la sua ira.

Lest Jehovah see, and evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

19 N on irritarti a motivo di chi fa il male e non portare invidia agli empi,

Fret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

20 p erché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio; la lampada degli empi sarà spenta.

For there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

21 F iglio mio, temi l'Eterno e il re, non associarti con quelli che vogliono cambiare;

Fear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

22 l a loro calamità sopraggiungerà improvvisa, e la rovina di entrambi chi la conosce?

For suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

23 A nche queste cose sono per i saggi. Non è bene usare preferenze personali in giudizio.

These also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

24 C hi dice all'empio: «Tu sei giusto» i popoli lo malediranno e le nazioni lo esecreranno.

Whoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

25 M a quelli che rimproverano l'empio troveranno delizie, e su di loro scenderanno le migliori benedizioni.

And to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

26 C hi dà una risposta giusta dà un bacio sulle labbra.

Lips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

27 M etti in ordine i tuoi affari di fuori metti a posto i tuoi campi e poi costruirai la tua casa.

Prepare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

28 N on testimoniare senza motivo contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le tue labbra.

Be not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

29 N on dire: «Come ha fatto a me, cosí farò a lui; gli renderò secondo l'opera sua».

Say not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

30 S on passato presso il campo del pigro e presso la vigna dell'uomo privo di senno;

Near the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

31 e d ecco, dovunque crescevano le spine, i rovi ne coprivano il suolo e il muro di pietre era crollato.

And lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

32 O sservando ciò, riflettei attentamente; da quel che vidi ne ricavai una lezione:

And I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

33 d ormire un po' sonnecchiare un po' incrociare un po' le braccia per riposare;

A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

34 c osí la tua povertà verrà come un ladro e la tua indigenza come un uomo armato.

And thy poverty hath come a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!
