1 Н е завидуй злим людям, не бажай бути з ними,

Be not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

2 б о їхне серце говорить про здирство, а уста їхні мовлять про зло.

For destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

3 Д ім будується мудрістю, і розумом ставиться міцно.

By wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

4 А через пізнання кімнати наповнюються усіляким маєтком цінним та приємним.

And by knowledge the inner parts are filled, all precious and pleasant wealth.

5 М удрий сильніший від сильного, а людина розумна від повносилого.

Mighty the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

6 Т ому то провадь війну мудрими радами, бо спасіння в численності радників.

For by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance in a multitude of counsellors.

7 Д ля безумного мудрість занадто висока, своїх уст не розкриє при брамі.

Wisdom high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

8 Х то чинити лихе заміряє, того звуть лукавим.

Whoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

9 З амір глупоти то гріх, а насмішник огида людині.

The thought of folly sin, And an abomination to man a scorner.

10 Я кщо ти в день недолі знесилився, то мала твоя сила.

Thou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

11 Р ятуй узятих на смерть, також тих, хто на страчення хилиться, хіба не підтримаєш їх?

If delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

12 Я кщо скажеш: Цього ми не знали! чи ж Той, хто серця випробовує, знати не буде? Він Сторож твоєї душі, і він знає про це, і поверне людині за чином її.

When thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

13 Ї ж, сину мій, мед, бо він добрий, а мед щільниковий солодкий він на піднебінні твоїм,

Eat my son, honey that good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

14 о так мудрість пізнай для своєї душі: якщо знайдеш її, то ти маєш майбутність, і надія твоя не понищиться!

So the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

15 Н е чатуй на помешкання праведного, ти безбожнику, не ограблюй мешкання його,

Lay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

16 б о праведний сім раз впаде та зведеться, а безбожний в погибіль впаде!

For seven doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

17 Н е тішся, як ворог твій падає, а коли він спіткнеться, хай серце твоє не радіє,

In the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

18 щ об Господь не побачив, і це не було в Його очах лихим, і щоб Він не звернув Свого гніву від нього на тебе!

Lest Jehovah see, and evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

19 Н е пались на злочинців, не заздри безбожним,

Fret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

20 б о злому не буде майбутности, світильник безбожних погасне.

For there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

21 Б ійся, сину мій, Господа та царя, не водися з непевними,

Fear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

22 б о погибіль їхня нагло постане, а біду від обох тих хто знає?

For suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

23 І оце ось походить від мудрих: Звертати увагу в суді на обличчя не добре.

These also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

24 Х то буде казати безбожному: Праведний ти! того проклинатимуть люди, і гніватись будуть на того народи.

Whoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

25 А тим, хто картає його, буде миле оце, і прийде на них благословення добра!

And to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

26 М ов у губи цілує, хто відповідає правдиве.

Lips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

27 П риготуй свою працю надворі, й оброби собі поле, а потім збудуєш свій дім.

Prepare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

28 Н е будь ложним свідком на свого ближнього, і не підговорюй устами своїми.

Be not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

29 Н е кажи: Як зробив він мені, так зроблю я йому, верну людині за чином її!

Say not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

30 Я проходив край поля людини лінивої, та край виноградника недоумкуватого,

Near the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

31 і ось все воно позаростало терням, будяками покрита поверхня його, камінний же мур його був поруйнований...

And lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

32 І бачив я те, і увагу звернув, і взяв я поуку собі:

And I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

33 Щ е трохи поспати, подрімати ще трохи, руки трохи зложити, щоб полежати,

A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

34 і приходить, немов мандрівник, незаможність твоя, і нужда твоя, як озброєний муж!...

And thy poverty hath come a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!
