1 А коли Він проходив, побачив чоловіка, що сліпим був з народження.

And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,

2 І спитали Його учні Його, говорячи: Учителю, хто згрішив: чи він сам, чи батьки його, що сліпим він родився?

and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?'

3 І сус відповів: Не згрішив ані він, ні батьки його, а щоб діла Божі з'явились на ньому.

Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;

4 М и мусимо виконувати діла Того, Хто послав Мене, аж поки є день. Надходить он ніч, коли жаден нічого не зможе виконувати.

it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: --

5 Д оки Я в світі, Я Світло для світу.

when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.'

6 П ромовивши це, Він сплюнув на землю, і з слини грязиво зробив, і очі сліпому помазав грязивом,

These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

7 і до нього промовив: Піди, умийся в ставку Сілоам визначає це Посланий. Тож пішов той і вмився, і вернувся видющим...

`Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,' which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;

8 А сусіди та ті, що бачили перше його, як був він сліпий, говорили: Чи ж не той це, що сидів та просив?

the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?'

9 Г оворили одні, що це він, а інші казали: Ні, подібний до нього. А він відказав: Це я!

others said -- `This is he;' and others -- `He is like to him;' he himself said, -- `I am.'

10 І питали його: Як же очі відкрились тобі?

They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?'

11 А той оповідав: Чоловік, що Його звуть Ісусом, грязиво зробив, і очі помазав мені, і до мене сказав: Піди в Сілоам та й умийся. Я ж пішов та й умився, і став бачити.

he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;'

12 І сказали до нього: Де Він? Відказує той: Я не знаю.

they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?' he saith, `I have not known.'

13 В едуть тоді до фарисеїв того, що був перше незрячий.

They bring him to the Pharisees who once blind,

14 А була то субота, як грязиво Ісус учинив і відкрив йому очі.

and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15 І знов запитали його й фарисеї, як видющим він став. А він розповів їм: Грязиво поклав Він на очі мені, а я вмився, та й бачу.

Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash -- and I see.'

16 Т оді деякі з фарисеїв казали: Не від Бога Оцей Чоловік, бо суботи не держить. А інші казали: Як же чуда такі може грішна людина чинити? І незгода між ними була.

Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;' others said, `How is a man -- a sinful one -- able to do such signs?' and there was a division among them.

17 Т ому знову говорять сліпому: Що ти кажеш про Нього, коли очі відкрив Він тобі? А той відказав: Він Пророк!

They said to the blind man again, `Thou -- what dost thou say of him -- that he opened thine eyes?'

18 Ю деї проте йому не повірили, що незрячим він був і прозрів, аж поки не покликано батьків того прозрілого.

and he said -- `He is a prophet.' The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,

19 І запитали їх, кажучи: Чи ваш оце син, про якого ви кажете, ніби родився сліпим? Як же він тепер бачить?

and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?'

20 А батьки його відповіли та сказали: Ми знаєм, що цей то наш син, і що він народився сліпим.

His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

21 А ле як тепер бачить, не знаємо, або хто йому очі відкрив, ми не відаємо. Поспитайте його, він дорослий, хай сам скаже про себе...

and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.'

22 Т аке говорили батьки його, бо боялись юдеїв: юдеї бо вже були змовились, як хто за Христа Його визнає, щоб той був відлучений від синагоги.

These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him -- Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

23 О сь тому говорили батьки його: Він дорослий, його поспитайте.

because of this his parents said -- `He is of age, ask him.'

24 І покликали вдруге того чоловіка, що був сліпим, і сказали йому: Віддай хвалу Богові. Ми знаємо, що грішний Отой Чоловік.

They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;'

25 А ле він відповів: Чи Він грішний не знаю. Одне тільки знаю, що я був сліпим, а тепер бачу!...

he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner -- I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.'

26 І спитали його: Що тобі Він зробив? Як відкрив тобі очі?

And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?'

27 В ідповів він до них: Я вже вам говорив, та не слухали ви. Що бажаєте знову почути? Може й ви Його учнями хочете стати?

He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?'

28 А вони його вилаяли та й сказали: То ти Його учень, а ми учні Мойсеєві.

They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses' disciples;

29 М и знаємо, що Бог говорив до Мойсея, звідки ж узявся Оцей, ми не відаємо.

we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one -- we have not known whence he is.'

30 В ідповів чоловік і сказав їм: То ж воно й дивно, що не знаєте ви, звідки Він, а Він мені очі відкрив!

The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!

31 Т а ми знаємо, що грішників Бог не послухає; хто ж богобійний, і виконує волю Його, того слухає Він.

and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;

32 В ідвіку не чувано, щоб хто очі відкрив був сліпому з народження.

from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind;

33 К оли б не від Бога був Цей, Він нічого не міг би чинити.

if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.'

34 В они відповіли та й сказали йому: Ти ввесь у гріхах народився, і чи тобі нас учити? І геть його вигнали.

They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!' and they cast him forth without.

35 Д ізнався Ісус, що вони того вигнали геть, і, знайшовши його, запитав: Чи віруєш ти в Сина Божого?

Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?'

36 В ідповів той, говорячи: Хто ж то, Пане, Такий, щоб я вірував у Нього?

he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?'

37 П ромовив до нього Ісус: І ти бачив Його, і Той, Хто говорить з тобою то Він!...

And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;'

38 А він відказав: Я вірую, Господи! І вклонився Йому.

and he said, `I believe, sir,' and bowed before him.

39 І промовив Ісус: На суд Я прийшов у цей світ, щоб бачили темні, а видющі щоб стали незрячі.

And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.'

40 І почули це деякі з тих фарисеїв, що були з Ним, та й сказали Йому: Чи ж і ми невидющі?

And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?'

41 В ідказав їм Ісус: Якби ви невидющі були, то не мали б гріха; а тепер ви говорите: Бачимо, то й ваш гріх зостається при вас!

Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say -- We see, therefore doth your sin remain.
