1 А оце ймення Ізраїлевих синів, що прийшли з Яковом до Єгипту. Кожен із домом своїм прибули:

And these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

2 Р увим, Симеон, Левій і Юда,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 І ссахар, Завулон і Веніямин,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Д ан і Нефталим, Ґад і Асир.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 І було всіх душ, що вийшли з стегна Якового, сімдесят душ. А Йосип був ув Єгипті.

And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

6 І вмер Йосип і всі браття його, та ввесь той рід.

And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

7 А Ізраїлеві сини плодилися сильно, і розмножувались, та й стали вони надзвичайно сильні. І наповнився ними той край.

and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

8 І став над Єгиптом новий цар, що не знав Йосипа.

And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

9 І сказав він до народу свого: Ось народ Ізраїлевих синів численніший і сильніший від нас!

and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

10 С таньмо ж мудріші за нього, щоб він не множився! Бо буде, коли нам трапиться війна, то прилучиться й він до ворогів наших, і буде воювати проти нас, і вийде з цього краю.

give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

11 І настановили над ним начальників податків, щоб його гнобити своїми тягарами. І він будував міста на запаси фараонові: Пітом і Рамесес.

And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

12 А ле що більше його гнобили, то більше він множився та більше ширився. І жахалися єгиптяни через Ізраїлевих синів.

and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

13 І Єгипет змушував синів Ізраїля тяжко працювати.

and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

14 І вони огірчували їхнє життя тяжкою працею коло глини та коло цегли, і коло всякої праці на полі, кожну їхню працю, яку змушували тяжко робити.

and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

15 І звелів був єгипетський цар єврейським бабам-сповитухам, що одній ім'я Шіфра, а ім'я другій Пуа,

And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

16 і говорив: Як будете бабувати єврейок, то дивіться на порід: коли буде син, то вбийте його, а коли це дочка, то нехай живе.

and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

17 А ле баби-сповитухи боялися Бога, і не робили того, як казав їм єгипетський цар. І вони лишали хлопчиків при житті.

And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

18 І покликав єгипетський цар баб-сповитух, та й сказав їм: Нащо ви робите цю річ, та лишаєте дітей при житті?

and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

19 І сказали баби-сповитухи до фараона: Бо єврейки не такі, як єгипетські жінки, бо вони самі баби-сповитухи: поки прийде до них баба-сповитуха, то вони вже й народять.

And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

20 І Бог чинив добро бабам-сповитухам, а народ розмножувався, і сильно міцнів.

And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

21 І сталося, тому, що ті баби-сповитухи боялися Бога, то Він будував їм доми.

and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

22 І наказав фараон усьому народові своєму, говорячи: Кожного народженого єврейського сина кидайте його до Річки, а кожну дочку зоставляйте при житті!

and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
