1 І пішов один муж з дому Левія, і взяв собі за жінку дочку Левієву.

And there goeth a man of the house of Levi, and he taketh the daughter of Levi,

2 І завагітніла та жінка, та й сина вродила. І побачили його, що він гарний, та й ховала його три місяці.

and the woman conceiveth, and beareth a son, and she seeth him that he fair, and she hideth him three months,

3 Т а не могла його більше ховати. І взяла йому папірусову скриньку, і виасфальтувала її асфальтом та смолою, і положила до неї дитину, та й поклала в очереті на березі Річки.

and she hath not been able any more to hide him, and she taketh for him an ark of rushes, and daubeth it with bitumen and with pitch, and putteth the lad in it, and putteth in the weeds by the edge of the River;

4 А сестра його стояла здалека, щоб довідатися, що йому станеться.

and his sister stationeth herself afar off, to know what is done to him.

5 І зійшла фараонова дочка купатися на Річку, а служниці її ходили понад Річкою. І побачила вона ту скриньку серед очерету, і послала невільницю свою, щоб узяла її.

And a daughter of Pharaoh cometh down to bathe at the River, and her damsels are walking by the side of the River, and she seeth the ark in the midst of the weeds, and sendeth her handmaid, and she taketh it,

6 І відчинила, та й побачила дитину, ось хлопчик плаче. І вона змилосердилася над ним, та й сказала: Це з єврейських дітей!

and openeth, and seeth him -- the lad, and lo, a child weeping! and she hath pity on him, and saith, `This is of the Hebrews' children.'

7 І сказала сестра його до фараонової дочки: Чи не піти й не покликати тобі жінку-мамку з єврейок, і вона годуватиме тобі дитину?

And his sister saith unto the daughter of Pharaoh, `Do I go? when I have called for thee a suckling woman of the Hebrews, then she doth suckle the lad for thee;'

8 І сказала їй дочка фараонова: Іди. І пішла та дівчина, і покликала матір дитини.

and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Go;' and the virgin goeth, and calleth the mother of the lad,

9 А дочка фараонова сказала до неї: На тобі цю дитину, та й годуй її для мене. А я дам тобі заплату. І взяла та жінка дитину, і годувала її.

and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Take this lad away, and suckle him for me, and I -- I give thy hire;' and the woman taketh the lad, and suckleth him.

10 І підросло те дитя, і вона привела його до фараонової дочки, і він став їй за сина. І вона назвала йому ймення Мойсей, і сказала: бо з води я витягла його.

And the lad groweth, and she bringeth him in to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he is to her for a son, and she calleth his name Moses, and saith, `Because -- from the water I have drawn him.'

11 І сталося за тих днів, і підріс Мойсей. І вийшов він до братів своїх, та й приглядався до їхніх терпінь. І побачив він єгиптянина, що бив єврея з братів його.

And it cometh to pass, in those days, that Moses is grown, and he goeth out unto his brethren, and looketh on their burdens, and seeth a man, an Egyptian, smiting a man, a Hebrew, of his brethren,

12 І озирнувся він туди та сюди, і побачив, що нікого нема, та й убив єгиптянина, і заховав його в пісок.

and he turneth hither and thither, and seeth that there is no man, and smiteth the Egyptian, and hideth him in the sand.

13 І вийшов він другого дня, аж ось сваряться двоє євреїв. І сказав він несправедливому: Нащо ти б'єш свого ближнього?

And he goeth out on the second day, and lo, two men, Hebrews, striving! and he saith to the wrong-doer, `Why dost thou smite thy neighbour?'

14 А той відказав: Хто тебе настановив за начальника та за суддю над нами? Чи ти думаєш убити мене, як ти вбив був єгиптянина? І злякався Мойсей та й сказав собі: Справді, та справа стала відома!

and he saith, `Who set thee for a head and a judge over us? to slay me art thou saying, as thou hast slain the Egyptian?' and Moses feareth, and saith, `Surely the thing hath been known.'

15 І почув фараон про цю справу, та й шукав, щоб убити Мойсея. І втік Мойсей від фараонового лиця, і оселився в країні Мідіян.

And Pharaoh heareth of this thing, and seeketh to slay Moses, and Moses fleeth from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelleth in the land of Midian, and dwelleth by the well.

16 А в мідіянського жерця було сім дочок. І прийшли вони, і витягали воду, і наповнили корита, щоб напоїти отару свого батька.

And to a priest of Midian seven daughters, and they come and draw, and fill the troughs, to water the flock of their father,

17 І прийшли пастухи й відігнали їх. І встав Мойсей, та й оборонив їх, і напоїв їхню отару.

and the shepherds come and drive them away, and Moses ariseth, and saveth them, and watereth their flock.

18 І прибули вони до Реуїла, свого батька, а той поспитав: Чого ви сьогодні так скоро прийшли?.

And they come in to Reuel their father, and he saith, `Wherefore have ye hastened to come in to-day?'

19 А ті відказали: Якийсь єгиптянин оборонив нас від руки пастухів, а також навіть натягав нам води й напоїв отару.

and they say, `A man, an Egyptian, hath delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also hath diligently drawn for us, and watereth the flock;'

20 І сказав він до своїх дочок: А де він? Чому ви покинули того чоловіка? Покличте його, і нехай він з'їсть хліба.

and he saith unto his daughters, `And where he? why this? -- ye left the man! call for him, and he doth eat bread.'

21 І погодився Мойсей сидіти з тим чоловіком, а той видав за Мойсея дочку свою Ціппору.

And Moses is willing to dwell with the man, and he giveth Zipporah his daughter to Moses,

22 І породила вона сина, а він назвав ім'я йому: Ґершом, бо сказав: Я став приходьком у чужому краї.

and she beareth a son, and he calleth his name Gershom, for he said, `A sojourner I have been in a strange land.'

23 І сталося по довгих днях, і вмер цар Єгипту. А Ізраїлеві сини стогнали від тієї роботи та кричали. І їхній зойк через ту роботу донісся до Бога.

And it cometh to pass during these many days, that the king of Egypt dieth, and the sons of Israel sigh because of the service, and cry, and their cry goeth up unto God, because of the service;

24 І почув Бог їхній стогін. І згадав Бог Свого заповіта з Авраамом, Ісаком та Яковом.

and God heareth their groaning, and God remembereth His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob;

25 І Бог бачив синів Ізраїлевих, і Бог зглянувся над ними.

and God seeth the sons of Israel, and God knoweth.
