1 А Єгорам, Ахавів син, зацарював над Ізраїлем у Самарії, у вісімнадцятому році Йосафата, Юдиного царя, і царював дванадцять років.

And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,

2 І чинив він лихо в Господніх очах, тільки не так, як батько його та мати його, він викинув Ваалового боввана, що зробив був батько його.

and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;

3 П роте гріхів Єровоама, Неватового сина, що вводив у гріх Ізраїля, він тримався, і не відставав від них.

only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.

4 А Меша, цар моавський, розводив дрібну худобу, і давав Ізраїлевому цареві сто тисяч ягнят та сто тисяч рунних баранів.

And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, wool,

5 І сталося, як помер Ахав, то збунтувався моавський цар проти Ізраїлевого царя.

and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.

6 І вийшов того дня цар Єгорам із Самарії, і перелічив усього Ізраїля.

And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,

7 І пішов він, і послав до Йосафата, царя Юдиного, говорячи: Збунтувався проти мене цар моавський. Чи підеш зо мною на війну до Моаву? А той відказав: Вийду. Я як ти, мій народ як твій народ, мої коні як твої коні!

and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.

8 І сказав: Котрою дорогою підемо? А той відказав: Дорогою едомської пустині.

And he saith, `Where this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

9 І пішов цар Ізраїлів, і цар Юдин, і цар едомський, і йшли обхідною дорогою сім день. І не було води таборові та худобі, що була при них.

And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that at their feet,

10 І сказав Ізраїлів цар: Ах, Господь викликав трьох оцих царів, щоб віддати їх у руку Моава.

and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'

11 І сказав Йосафат: Чи нема тут Господнього пророка, щоб через нього вивідати слово Господа? І відповів один із слуг Ізраїлевого царя й сказав: Тут є Єлисей, Шафатів син, що служив Іллі.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

12 І сказав Йосафат: Слово Господнє з ним! І зійшли до нього цар Ізраїлів, і Йосафат, і цар едомський.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.

13 І сказав Єлисей до Ізраїлевого царя: Що тобі до мене? Іди до пророків батька свого та до пророків своєї матері! А Ізраїлів цар відказав йому: Ні, бо Господь покликав трьох цих царів, щоб віддати їх у руку Моава.

And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'

14 І сказав Єлисей: Як живий Господь Саваот, що я стою перед лицем Його, коли б я не зважав на Йосафата, Юдиного царя, не споглянув би на тебе, і не побачив би я тебе.

And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;

15 А тепер приведіть мені гусляра. І сталося, коли грав гусляр, то на Єлисеї була Господня рука,

and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,

16 і він сказав: Так сказав Господь: Накопайте на цій долині яму за ямою!

and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;

17 Б о так сказав Господь: Не побачите вітру, і не побачите дощу, а потік цей буде наповнений водою. І будете пити ви, та череди ваші, та ваша худоба.

for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 Т а буде цього мало в Господніх очах, і Він видасть і Моава в вашу руку.

`And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,

19 І ви поб'єте всяке укріплене місто та всяке місто вибране, і всяке добре дерево повалите, і всі водні джерела загатите, і всяку добру полеву ділянку завалите камінням.

and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'

20 І сталося ранком, коли приноситься хлібна жертва, аж ось полилася вода з едомської дороги. І наповнилася земля водою.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the -present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,

21 А ввесь Моав почув, що ті царі вийшли воювати з ними. І вони скликали всіх, хто носить пояса й старше, і поставали на границі.

and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.

22 І повставали вони рано вранці, і сонце засвітило над водою. І побачили моавляни навпроти воду, червону, як кров.

And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,

23 І казали вони: Це кров, рубаючися, порубалися царі мечами, і позабивали один одного. А тепер на здобич, Моаве!

and say, `Blood this; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'

24 І прийшли вони до Ізраїлевого табору. І встав Ізраїль та й побив моавлян, і ті повтікали перед ними. І вони ввійшли до них, і били моавлян,

And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,

25 а міста руйнували, і на всяку добру польову ділянку усі кидали свого каменя й закидали її, і всяке джерело води загачували, і валили всяке добре дерево, й аж тільки в Кір-Харешеті позоставили каміння його. І оточили тарани, та й били його.

and the cities they break down, and every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.

26 І побачив моавський цар, що бій перемагає його, і взяв він сім сотень чоловіка, що орудують мечем, щоб продертися до едомського царя, та не зміг.

And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,

27 І він узяв свого перворідного сина, що мав царювати замість нього, і приніс його цілопаленням на мурі... І повстав великий гнів на Ізраїля, і вони відступили від нього, і вернулися до свого краю.

and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
