1 I oram, fiul lui Ahab, a început să domnească peste Israel la Samaria, în al optsprezecelea an al lui Iosafat, împăratul lui Iuda. A domnit doisprezece ani.

And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,

2 E l a făcut ce este rău înaintea Domnului, totuş nu ca tatăl său şi ca mama sa. A răsturnat stîlpii lui Baal, pe cari -i făcuse tatăl său;

and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;

3 d ar s'a dedat la păcatele lui Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, care făcuse pe Israel să păcătuiască, şi nu s'a abătut dela ele.

only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.

4 M eşa, împăratul Moabului, avea turme mari şi plătea împăratului lui Israel un bir de o sută de mii de miei şi o sută de mii de berbeci cu lîna lor.

And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, wool,

5 L a moartea lui Ahab, împăratul Moabului s'a răsculat împotriva împăratului lui Israel.

and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.

6 Î mpăratul Ioram a ieşit atunci din Samaria, şi a numărat pe tot Israelul.

And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,

7 A pornit, şi a trimes să spună lui Iosafat, împăratul lui Iuda:,,Împăratul Moabului s'a răsculat împotriva mea; vrei să vii cu mine să luptăm împotriva Moabului?`` Iosafat a răspuns:,, Voi merge, eu ca tine, poporul meu ca poporul tău, caii mei ca ai tăi.``

and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.

8 Ş i a zis:,, Pe care drum să ne suim?`` Ioram a zis:,, Pe drumul care duce în pustia Edomului.``

And he saith, `Where this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

9 Î mpăratul lui Israel, împăratul lui Iuda şi împăratul Edomului, au plecat; şi, după un drum de şapte zile, n'au avut apă pentru oştire şi pentru vitele cari veneau după ea.

And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that at their feet,

10 A tunci împăratul lui Israel a zis:,, Vai! Domnul a chemat pe aceşti trei împăraţi ca să -i dea în mînile Moabului!``

and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'

11 D ar Iosafat a zis:,, Nu este aici nici un prooroc al Domnului, prin care să putem întreba pe Domnul?`` Unul din slujitorii împăratului lui Israel a răspuns:,, Este aici Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, care turna apă pe mînile lui Ilie.``

And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

12 Ş i Iosafat a zis:,, Cuvîntul Domnului este cu el.`` Împăratul lui Israel, Iosafat, şi împăratul Edomului s'au pogorît la el.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.

13 E lisei a zis împăratului lui Israel:,, Ce am eu a face cu tine? Du-te la proorocii tatălui tău şi la proorocii mamei tale.`` Şi împăratul lui Israel i -a zis:,, Nu! căci Domnul a chemat pe aceşti trei împăraţi ca să -i dea în mînile Moabului!``

And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'

14 E lisei a zis:,, Viu este Domnul oştirilor, al cărui slujitor sînt, că, dacă n'aş avea în vedere pe Iosafat, împăratul lui Iuda, pe tine nu te-aş băga de loc în seamă, şi nici nu m'aş uita la tine.

And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;

15 A cum aduceţi-mi un cîntăreţ cu arfa.`` Şi pe cînd cînta cîntăreţul din arfă, mîna Domnului a fost peste Elisei.

and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,

16 Ş i a zis:,, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul:,, Faceţi gropi în valea aceasta, groapă lîngă groapă!

and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;

17 C ăci aşa vorbeşte Domnul:, Nu veţi vedea vînt şi nu veţi vedea ploaie, dar totuş valea aceasta se va umplea de apă, şi veţi bea, voi, turmele voastre şi vitele voastre.

for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 D ar aceasta este puţin lucru înaintea Domnului. El va da pe Moab în mînile voastre;

`And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,

19 v eţi sfărîma toate cetăţile întărite şi toate cetăţile alese, veţi tăia toţi copacii cei buni, veţi astupa toate izvoarele de apă, şi veţi strica cu pietre toate ogoarele cele mai bune.``

and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'

20 Ş i dimineaţa, în clipa cînd se aducea jertfa, iată că a venit apa de pe drumul Edomului, şi s'a umplut ţara de apă.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the -present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,

21 Î nsă, toţi Moabiţii, auzind că împăraţii se suie să lupte împotriva lor, au chemat pe toţi cei în vîrstă să poarte armele şi mai mari chiar, şi au stătut la hotar.

and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.

22 S 'au sculat disdedimineaţă, şi cînd a strălucit soarele peste ape, Moabiţii au văzut în faţa lor apele roşi ca sîngele.

And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,

23 E i au zis:,, Este sînge! Împăraţii au scos sabia între ei, s'au tăiat unii pe alţii; acum, la pradă, Moabiţi!``

and say, `Blood this; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'

24 Ş i au mers împotriva taberei lui Israel. Dar Israel s'a sculat, şi a bătut pe Moab, care a luat -o la fugă dinaintea lor. Au pătruns în ţară, şi au bătut pe Moab.

And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,

25 A u sfărîmat cetăţile, au aruncat fiecare pietre, în toate ogoarele cele mai bune şi le-au umplut cu pietre au astupat toate izvoarele de apă, şi au tăiat toţi copacii cei buni; prăştiaşii au înconjurat şi au bătut Chir-Hareset, din care n'au lăsat decît pietrele.

and the cities they break down, and every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.

26 Î mpăratul Moabului, văzînd că fusese înfrînt în luptă, a luat cu el şapte sute de oameni, cari scoteau sabia, să-şi croiască drum pînă la împăratului Edomului; dar n'au putut.

And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,

27 A luat atunci pe fiul său întîi născut, care trebuia să domnească în locul lui, şi l -a adus ca ardere de tot pe zid. Şi o mare mînie a cuprins pe Israel, care s'a depărtat de împăratul Moabului, şi s'a întors în ţară.

and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
