Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

2 p entru cunoaşterea înţelepciunii şi învăţăturii, pentru înţelegerea cuvintelor minţii;

For knowing wisdom and instruction, For understanding sayings of intelligence,

3 p entru căpătarea învăţăturilor de bun simţ, de dreptate, de judecată şi de nepărtinire;

For receiving the instruction of wisdom, Righteousness, judgment, and uprightness,

4 c a să dea celor neîncercaţi agerime de minte, tînărului cunoştinţă şi chibzuinţă, -

For giving to simple ones -- prudence, To a youth -- knowledge and discretion.

5 s ă asculte însă şi înţeleptul, şi îşi va mări ştiinţa, şi cel priceput, şi va căpăta iscusinţă-

(The wise doth hear and increaseth learning, And the intelligent doth obtain counsels.)

6 p entru prinderea înţelesului unei pilde sau al unui cuvînt adînc, înţelesul cuvintelor înţelepţilor şi al cuvintelor lor cu tîlc.

7 F rica Domnului este începutul ştiinţei; dar nebunii nesocotesc înţelepciunea şi învăţătura.

Fear of Jehovah a beginning of knowledge, Wisdom and instruction fools have despised!

8 A scultă, fiule, învăţătura tatălui tău, şi nu lepăda îndrumările mamei tale!

Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother,

9 C ăci ele sînt o cunună plăcută pe capul tău, şi un lanţ de aur la gîtul tău.

For a graceful wreath they to thy head, And chains to thy neck.

10 F iule, dacă nişte păcătoşi vor să te amăgească, nu te lăsa cîştigat de ei!

My son, if sinners entice thee be not willing.

11 D acă-ţi vor zice:,, Vino cu noi! Haidem să întindem curse ca să vărsăm sînge, să întindem fără temei laţuri celui nevinovat;

If they say, `Come with us, we lay wait for blood, We watch secretly for the innocent without cause,

12 h aidem să -i înghiţim de vii, ca locuinţa morţilor, şi întregi, ca pe cei ce se pogoară în groapă;

We swallow them as Sheol -- alive, And whole -- as those going down the pit,

13 v om găsi tot felul de lucruri scumpe, şi ne vom umplea casele cu pradă;

Every precious substance we find, We fill our houses spoil,

14 v ei avea şi tu partea ta la fel cu noi, o pungă vom avea cu toţii!`` -

Thy lot thou dost cast among us, One purse is -- to all of us.'

15 f iule, să nu porneşti la drum cu ei, abate-ţi piciorul de pe cărarea lor!

My son! go not in the way with them, Withhold thy foot from their path,

16 C ăci picioarele lor aleargă la rău, şi se grăbesc să verse sînge.

For their feet to evil do run, And they haste to shed blood.

17 D ar degeaba se aruncă laţul înaintea ochilor tuturor păsărilor;

Surely in vain is the net spread out before the eyes of any bird.

18 c ăci ei întind curse tocmai împotriva sîngelui lor, şi sufletului lor îşi întind ei laţuri.

And they for their own blood lay wait, They watch secretly for their own lives.

19 A ceasta este soarta tuturor celor lacomi de cîştig: lăcomia aduce pierderea celor ce se dedau la ea.

So the paths of every gainer of dishonest gain, The life of its owners it taketh.

20 Î nţelepciunea strigă pe uliţe, îşi înalţă glasul în pieţe:

Wisdom in an out-place crieth aloud, In broad places she giveth forth her voice,

21 s trigă unde e zarva mai mare; la porţi, în cetate, îşi spune cuvintele ei:

At the head of the multitudes she calleth, In the openings of the gates, In the city her sayings she saith:

22 P înă cînd veţi iubi prostia, proştilor? Pînă cînd le va plăcea batjocoritorilor batjocura, şi vor urî nebunii ştiinţa?

`Till when, ye simple, do ye love simplicity? And have scorners their scorning desired? And do fools hate knowledge?

23 Î ntoarceţi-vă să ascultaţi mustrările mele! Iată, voi turna duhul meu peste voi, vă voi face cunoscut cuvintele mele...

Turn back at my reproof, lo, I pour forth to you my spirit, I make known my words with you.

24 F iindcă eu chem şi voi vă împotriviţi, fiindcă îmi întind mîna şi nimeni ia seama,

Because I have called, and ye refuse, I stretched out my hand, and none is attending,

25 f iindcă lepădaţi toate sfaturile mele, şi nu vă plac mustrările mele,

And ye slight all my counsel, And my reproof ye have not desired.

26 d e aceea şi eu, voi rîde cînd veţi fi în vreo nenorocire, îmi voi bate joc de voi cînd vă va apuca groaza,

I also in your calamity do laugh, I deride when your fear cometh,

27 c înd vă va apuca groaza ca o furtună, şi cînd vă va învălui nenorocirea ca un vîrtej, cînd va da peste voi necazul şi strîmtorarea.

When your fear cometh as destruction, And your calamity as a hurricane doth come, When on you come adversity and distress.

28 A tunci mă vor chema, şi nu voi răspunde; mă vor căuta, şi nu mă vor găsi.

Then they call me, and I do not answer, They seek me earnestly, and find me not.

29 P entrucă au urît ştiinţa, şi n'au ales frica Domnului,

Because that they have hated knowledge, And the fear of Jehovah have not chosen.

30 p entrucă n'au iubit sfaturile mele, şi au nesocotit toate mustrările mele.

They have not consented to my counsel, They have despised all my reproof,

31 D e aceea se vor hrăni cu roada umbletelor lor, şi se vor sătura cu sfaturile lor.

And they eat of the fruit of their way, And from their own counsels they are filled.

32 C ăci împotrivirea proştilor îi ucide, şi liniştea nebunilor îi pierde;

For the turning of the simple slayeth them, And the security of the foolish destroyeth them.

33 d ar cel ce m'ascultă va locui fără grijă, va trăi liniştit şi fără să se teamă de vreun rău.

And whoso is hearkening to me dwelleth confidently, And quiet from fear of evil!'
