1 C uvîntul vorbit de Ieremia din partea Domnului şi care sună astfel:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

2 S coală-te şi pogoară-te în casa olarului; acolo te voi face să auzi cuvintele Mele!``

Rise, and thou hast gone down the potter's house, and there I cause thee to hear My words;

3 C înd m'am pogorît în casa olarului, iată că el lucra pe roată.

and I go down the potter's house, and lo, he is doing a work on the stones,

4 V asul pe care -l făcea n'a izbutit, -cum se întîmplă cu lutul în mîna olarului. Atunci el a făcut un alt vas, cum i -a plăcut lui să -l facă.

and marred is the vessel that he is making, as clay in the hand of the potter, and he hath turned and he maketh it another vessel, as it was right in the eyes of the potter to make.

5 Ş i Cuvîntul Domnului mi -a vorbit astfel:

And there is a word of Jehovah to me, saying:

6 N u pot Eu să fac cu voi ca olarul acesta casă a lui Israel? zice Domnul. Iată, cum este lutul în mîna olarului, aşa sînteţi voi în mîna Mea, casă a lui Israel!

As this potter am I not able to do to you? O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah. Lo, as clay in the hand of the potter, So ye in My hand, O house of Israel.

7 D eodată zic despre un neam, despre o împărăţie, că -l voi smulge, că -l voi surpa, şi că -l voi nimici.

The moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, To pluck up and to break down, and to destroy,

8 d ar dacă neamul acesta, despre care am vorbit astfel, se întoarce dela răutatea lui, atunci şi Mie Îmi pare rău de răul pe care Îmi pusesem în gînd să i -l fac.

And that nation hath turned from its evil, Because I have spoken against it, Then I have repented of the evil that I thought to do to it.

9 T ot aşa însă, deodată zic despre un neam, sau despre o împărăţie, că -l voi zidi sau că -l voi sădi.

And the moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, to build, and to plant,

10 D ar dacă neamul acesta face ce este rău înaintea Mea, şi n'ascultă glasul Meu, atunci Îmi pare rău şi de binele, pe care aveam de gînd să i -l fac.``

And it hath done the evil thing in Mine eyes, So as not to hearken to My voice, Then I have repented of the good That I have spoken of doing to it.

11 D e aceea, vorbeşte acum oamenilor lui Iuda şi locuitorilor Ierusalimului, şi zi:, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: Iată, pregătesc o nenorocire împotriva voastră, şi fac un plan împotriva voastră. De aceea, întoarceţi-vă fiecare dela calea voastră cea rea, îndreptaţi-vă umbletele şi faptele!``

And now, speak, I pray thee, unto men of Judah, And against inhabitants of Jerusalem, Saying: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am framing against you evil, And devising against you a device, Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way And amen your ways and your doings.

12 D ar ei zic:, Degeaba! Căci noi ne vom urma gîndurile noastre, şi vom lucra fiecare după pornirile inimii noastre rele!``

And they have said, It is incurable, For after our own devices we do go, And each the stubbornness of his evil heart we do.

13 D e aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul:,Întrebaţi pe neamuri! Cine a auzit vreodată asemenea lucruri? Fecioara lui Israel a făcut grozave blestemăţii.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ask, I pray you, among the nations, Who hath heard like these? A very horrible thing hath the virgin of Israel done.

14 P ărăseşte zăpada Libanului stînca ogoarelor? Sau se văd secînd apele cari vin de departe proaspete şi curgătoare?

Doth snow of Lebanon Cease from the rock of the field? Failed are the cold strange waters that flow?

15 T otuş poporul Meu M'a uitat şi aduce tămîie idolilor; s'a abătut din căile lui, a părăsit vechile cărări, şi a apucat pe cărări şi drumuri nebătute,

But My people have forgotten Me, to a vain thing they make perfume, And they cause them to stumble in their ways -- paths of old, To walk in paths -- a way not raised up,

16 f ăcînd astfel din ţara lor, o pustietate, o vecinică batjocură; toţi ceice trec prin ea sînt uimiţi şi dau din cap.

To make their land become a desolation, A hissing age-during, Every passer by it is astonished, And bemoaneth with his head.

17 C a vîntul de la răsărit, îi voi risipi înaintea vrăjmaşului; iar în ziua necazului lor, le voi întoarce spatele şi nu Mă voi uita la ei!``

As an east wind I scatter them before an enemy, The neck, and not the face, I shew them, In the day of their calamity.'

18 A tunci ei au zis:, Veniţi, să urzim rele împotriva lui Ieremia! Căci doar nu va pieri Legea din lipsă de preoţi, nici sfatul din lipsă de înţelepţi, nici cuvîntul din lipsă de prooroci. Haidem să -l ucidem cu vorba, şi să nu luăm seama la toate vorbirile lui!``

And they say, Come, And we devise against Jeremiah devices, For law doth not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet, Come, and we smite him with the tongue, And we do not attend to any of his words.

19 A scultă-mă, Doamne, şi auzi glasul protivnicilor mei!

Give attention, O Jehovah, unto me, And hearken to the voice of those contending with me.

20 C u rău se răsplăteşte binele? Căci au săpat o groapă ca să-mi ia viaţa. Adu-Ţi aminte că am stat înaintea Ta, ca să vorbesc bine pentru ei, şi să abat mînia Ta de la ei.

Is evil recompensed instead of good, That they have dug a pit for my soul? Remember my standing before Thee to speak good of them, To turn back Thy wrath from them.

21 D e aceea, dă pe copiii lor pradă foametei, şi doboară -i cu sabia! Nevestele lor să fie lipsite de copii şi să rămînă văduve, şi bărbaţii lor să fie luaţi de ciumă; tinerii lor să fie ucişi de sabie în luptă!

Therefore, give up their sons to famine, And cause them to run on the sides of the sword, And their wives are bereaved and widows, And their men are slain by death, Their young men smitten by sword in battle,

22 S ă se audă strigăte ieşind din casele lor, cînd cetele aduse de Tine vor cădea deodată peste ei! Căci au săpat o groapă, ca să mă prindă, şi mi-au întins laţuri supt picioare.

A cry is heard from their houses, For Thou bringest against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet.

23 D ar Tu, Doamne, cunoşti toate uneltirile lor făcute ca să mă omoare. Nu le ierta nelegiuirea, şi nu le şterge păcatul dinaintea Ta: ci să fie doborîţi în Faţa Ta! Lucrează împotriva lor la vremea mîniei Tale!``

And Thou, O Jehovah, Thou hast known, All their counsel against me for death, Thou dost not cover over their iniquity, Nor their sin from before Thee blottest out, And they are made to stumble before Thee, In the time of Thine anger work against them!
