1 R oboam s'a dus la Sihem, căci tot Israelul venise la Sihem să -l facă împărat.

And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

2 C înd a auzit lucrul acesta, Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, era în Egipt, unde fugise de împăratul Solomon; şi s'a întors din Egipt.

And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

3 A u trimes să -l cheme. Atunci Ieroboam şi tot Israelul au venit la Roboam şi i-au vorbit aşa:

and they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 T atăl tău ne -a îngreuiat jugul: acum uşurează această aspră robie şi jugul greu pe care l -a pus peste noi tatăl tău. Şi îţi vom sluji.``

`Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

5 E l le -a zis:,,Întoarceţi-vă la mine după trei zile.`` Şi poporul a plecat.

And he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

6 Î mpăratul Roboam a întrebat pe bătrînii cari fuseseră cu tatăl său Solomon, în timpul vieţii lui, şi a zis:,, Ce mă sfătuiţi să răspund poporului acestuia?``

And king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

7 Ş i iată ce i-au zis ei:,, Dacă vei fi bun cu poporul acesta, dacă -i vei primi bine, şi dacă le vei vorbi cu bunăvoinţă, îţi vor sluji pe vecie.``

And they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

8 D ar Roboam a lăsat sfatul pe care i -l dădeau bătrînii, şi a întrebat pe tinerii cari crescuseră cu el şi cari -l înconjurau.

And he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

9 E l le -a zis:,, Ce mă sfătuiţi să răspund poporului acestuia care-mi vorbeşte astfel:,, Uşurează jugul pe care l -a pus tatăl tău peste noi?``

and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

10 Ş i iată ce i-au zis tinerii cari crescuseră cu el:,, Aşa să vorbeşti poporului acestuia care ţi -a vorbit aşa:,, Tatăl tău ne -a îngreuiat jugul, iar tu uşurează-ni -l!`` să le vorbeşti aşa:,, Degetul meu cel mic este mai gros decît coapsele tatălui meu.

And the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

11 A cum, tatăl meu a pus peste voi un jug greu, dar eu îl voi face şi mai greu: tatăl meu v'a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu scorpioane.``

and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

12 I eroboam şi tot poporul au venit la Roboam a treia zi, după cum le spusese împăratul:,,Întoarceţi-vă la mine peste trei zile.``

And Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

13 Î mpăratul le -a răspuns aspru. Împăratul Roboam a lăsat sfatul bătrînilor,

And the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

14 ş i le -a vorbit aşa, după sfatul tinerilor:,, Tatăl meu v'a îngreuiat jugul, dar eu îl voi îngreuia şi mai mult; tatăl meu v'a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu scorpioane.``

and speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

15 A stfel împăratul n'a ascultat pe popor; căci aşa rînduise Dumnezeu, în vederea împlinirii cuvîntului, pe care -l spusese Domnul prin Ahia din Silo lui Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat.

And the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 C înd a văzut tot Israelul că împăratul nu -l ascultă, poporul a răspuns împăratului:,, Ce parte avem noi cu David? Noi n'avem nicio moştenire cu fiul lui Isai! La corturile tale, Israele! Acum, vezi-ţi de casă, Davide!`` Şi tot Israelul s'a dus în corturile lui.

And all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

17 C opiii lui Israel, cari locuiau în cetăţile lui Iuda, au fost singurii peste cari a domnit Roboam.

As to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

18 A tunci împăratul Roboam a trimes pe Hadoram, care era mai mare peste dări. Hadoram a fost împroşcat cu pietre de copiii lui Israel, şi a murit. Şi împăratul Roboam s'a grăbit şi s'a suit într'un car, ca să fugă la Ierusalim.

And king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

19 A stfel s'a deslipit Israel de casa lui David pînă în ziua de azi.

and Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.
