1 E ntonces Roboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había ido a Siquem para hacerlo rey.

And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

2 Y cuando lo oyó Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, (porque él estaba en Egipto adonde había huido de la presencia del rey Salomón ), volvió Jeroboam de Egipto.

And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

3 Y enviaron a llamarlo. Entonces vino con todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

and they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 T u padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo; ahora pues, aligera la dura servidumbre de tu padre y el pesado yugo que puso sobre nosotros y te serviremos.

`Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

5 E ntonces él les dijo: Volved otra vez a mí dentro de tres días. Y el pueblo se fue.

And he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

6 E l rey Roboam pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón cuando aún vivía, diciendo: ¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?

And king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

7 Y ellos le respondieron, diciendo: Si eres bueno con este pueblo y les complaces y les dices buenas palabras, entonces ellos serán tus siervos para siempre.

And they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

8 P ero él abandonó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos, y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y le servían.

And he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

9 Y les dijo: ¿Qué aconsejáis que respondamos a este pueblo que me ha hablado, diciendo: “Aligera el yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros”?

and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

10 Y los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron, diciendo: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado, diciendo: “Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, pero tú hazlo más ligero para nosotros.” Así les dirás: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.

And the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

11 “ Por cuanto mi padre os cargó con un pesado yugo, yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con látigos, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.”

and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

12 E ntonces vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam al tercer día como el rey lo había dicho, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.

And Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

13 E l rey les respondió con dureza, pues el rey Roboam había menospreciado el consejo de los ancianos,

And the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo lo haré más pesado; mi padre os castigó con látigos, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.

and speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

15 E l rey no escuchó al pueblo, porque esto venía de parte de Dios, para que el Señor confirmara la palabra que El había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat.

And the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 C uando todo Israel vio que el rey no los escuchaba, el pueblo respondió al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia con el hijo de Isaí. ¡Cada uno a su tienda, Israel! ¡Mira ahora por tu casa, David! Y todo Israel se fue a sus tiendas.

And all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

17 P ero en cuanto a los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá, Roboam reinó sobre ellos.

As to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

18 E ntonces el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba a cargo de los trabajos forzados, pero los hijos de Israel lo mataron a pedradas; y el rey Roboam se apresuró a subir a su carro para huir a Jerusalén.

And king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

19 A sí Israel ha estado en rebeldía contra la casa de David hasta hoy.

and Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.
