1 E ntonces José ordenó al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: Llena de alimento los costales de los hombres, todo lo que puedan llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno de ellos en la boca de su costal.

And he commandeth him who over his house, saying, `Fill the bags of the men food, as they are able to bear, and put the money of each in the mouth of his bag;

2 Y mi copa, la copa de plata, ponla en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su grano. Y él hizo conforme a lo que había dicho José.

and my cup, the silver cup, thou dost put in the mouth of the bag of the young one, and his corn-money;' and he doth according to the word of Joseph which he hath spoken.

3 A l rayar el alba, fueron despedidos los hombres con sus asnos.

The morning is bright, and the men have been sent away, they and their asses --

4 C uando habían salido ellos de la ciudad, y no estaban muy lejos, José dijo al mayordomo de su casa: Levántate, sigue a esos hombres; y cuando los alcances, diles: “¿Por qué habéis pagado mal por bien?

they have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good?

5 “ ¿No es esta la copa en que bebe mi señor, y que de hecho usa para adivinar ? Obrasteis mal en lo que hicisteis.”

Is not this that with which my lord drinketh? and he observeth diligently with it; ye have done evil that which ye have done.'

6 A sí que los alcanzó, les dijo estas palabras.

And he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words,

7 Y ellos le dijeron: ¿Por qué habla mi señor de esta manera ? Lejos esté de tus siervos hacer tal cosa.

and they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word;

8 H e aquí, el dinero que encontramos en la boca de nuestros costales, te lo volvimos a traer de la tierra de Canaán. ¿Cómo, pues, habíamos de robar de la casa de tu señor plata u oro?

lo, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold?

9 A quel de tus siervos que sea hallado con ella, que muera, y también nosotros entonces seremos esclavos de mi señor.

with whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.'

10 Y él dijo: Sea ahora también conforme a vuestras palabras; aquel que sea hallado con ella será mi esclavo, y los demás de vosotros seréis inocentes.

And he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;'

11 E llos se dieron prisa; cada uno bajó su costal a tierra, y cada cual abrió su costal.

and they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag;

12 Y él registró, comenzando con el mayor y acabando con el menor; y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín.

and he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin;

13 E ntonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, y después de cargar cada uno su asno, regresaron a la ciudad.

and they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city.

14 C uando Judá llegó con sus hermanos a casa de José, él estaba aún allí, y ellos cayeron a tierra delante de él.

And Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth;

15 Y José les dijo: ¿Qué acción es esta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis que un hombre como yo puede ciertamente adivinar ?

and Joseph saith to them, `What this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?'

16 E ntonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué podemos decir a mi señor? ¿Qué podemos hablar y cómo nos justificaremos? Dios ha descubierto la iniquidad de tus siervos; he aquí, somos esclavos de mi señor, tanto nosotros como aquel en cuyo poder fue encontrada la copa.

And Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;'

17 M as él respondió: Lejos esté de mí hacer eso. El hombre en cuyo poder ha sido encontrada la copa será mi esclavo; pero vosotros, subid en paz a vuestro padre. Judá intercede por Benjamín

and he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.'

18 E ntonces Judá se le acercó, y dijo: Oh señor mío, permite a tu siervo hablar una palabra a los oídos de mi señor, y que no se encienda tu ira contra tu siervo, pues tú eres como Faraón mismo.

And Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh.

19 M i señor preguntó a sus siervos, diciendo: “¿Tenéis padre o hermano ?”

My lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother?

20 Y respondimos a mi señor: “Tenemos un padre ya anciano y un hermano pequeño, hijo de su vejez. Y su hermano ha muerto, así que sólo queda él de los hijos de su madre, y su padre lo ama.”

and we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him.

21 E ntonces tú dijiste a tus siervos: “Traédmelo para que yo lo vea.”

`And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him;

22 Y nosotros respondimos a mi señor: “El muchacho no puede dejar a su padre, pues si dejara a su padre, éste moriría.”

and we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died;

23 T ú, sin embargo, dijiste a tus siervos: “Si vuestro hermano menor no desciende con vosotros, no volveréis a ver mi rostro.”

and thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face.

24 A conteció, pues, que cuando subimos a mi padre, tu siervo, le contamos las palabras de mi señor.

`And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord;

25 Y nuestro padre dijo: “Regresad, compradnos un poco de alimento.”

and our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food,

26 M as nosotros respondimos: “No podemos ir. Si nuestro hermano menor va con nosotros, entonces iremos; porque no podemos ver el rostro del hombre si nuestro hermano no está con nosotros.”

and we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man's face, and our young brother not with us.

27 Y mi padre, tu siervo, nos dijo: “Vosotros sabéis que mi mujer me dio a luz dos hijos;

`And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me,

28 e l uno salió de mi lado, y dije: ‘Seguro que ha sido despedazado ’, y no lo he visto desde entonces.

and the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since;

29 “ Y si también os lleváis a éste de mi presencia, y algo malo le sucede, haréis descender mis canas con dolor al Seol.”

when ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol.

30 A hora pues, cuando yo vuelva a mi padre, tu siervo, y el muchacho no esté con nosotros, como su vida está ligada a la vida del muchacho,

`And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul),

31 s ucederá que cuando él vea que el muchacho no está con nosotros, morirá. Así pues, tus siervos harán descender las canas de nuestro padre, tu siervo, con dolor al Seol.

then it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol;

32 P orque yo, tu siervo, me hice responsable del muchacho con mi padre, diciendo: “Si no te lo traigo, que lleve yo la culpa delante de mi padre para siempre.”

for thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days.

33 A hora pues, te ruego que quede este tu siervo como esclavo de mi señor, en lugar del muchacho, y que el muchacho suba con sus hermanos.

`And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren,

34 P ues, ¿cómo subiré a mi padre no estando el muchacho conmigo, sin que yo vea el mal que sobrevendrá a mi padre?

for how do I go up unto my father, and the youth not with me? lest I look on the evil which doth find my father.'
