1 D epois José deu ordem ao despenseiro de sua casa, dizendo: Enche de mantimento os sacos dos homens, quanto puderem levar, e põe o dinheiro de cada um na boca do seu saco.

And he commandeth him who over his house, saying, `Fill the bags of the men food, as they are able to bear, and put the money of each in the mouth of his bag;

2 E a minha taça de prata porãs na boca do saco do mais novo, com o dinheiro do seu trigo. Assim fez ele conforme a palavra que José havia dito.

and my cup, the silver cup, thou dost put in the mouth of the bag of the young one, and his corn-money;' and he doth according to the word of Joseph which he hath spoken.

3 L ogo que veio a luz da manhã, foram despedidos os homens, eles com os seus jumentos.

The morning is bright, and the men have been sent away, they and their asses --

4 H avendo eles saído da cidade, mas não se tendo distanciado muito, disse José ao seu despenseiro: Levanta-te e segue os homens; e, alcançando-os, dize-lhes: Por que tornastes o mal pelo bem?

they have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good?

5 N ão é esta a taça por que bebe meu senhor, e de que se serve para adivinhar? Fizestes mal no que fizestes.

Is not this that with which my lord drinketh? and he observeth diligently with it; ye have done evil that which ye have done.'

6 E ntão ele, tendo-os alcançado, lhes falou essas mesmas palavras.

And he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words,

7 R esponderam-lhe eles: Por que falo meu senhor tais palavras? Longe estejam teus servos de fazerem semelhante coisa.

and they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word;

8 E is que o dinheiro, que achamos nas bocas dos nossos sacos, to tornamos a trazer desde a terra de Canaã; como, pois, furtaríamos da casa do teu senhor prata ou ouro?

lo, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold?

9 A quele dos teus servos com quem a taça for encontrada, morra; e ainda nós seremos escravos do meu senhor.

with whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.'

10 A o que disse ele: Seja conforme as vossas palavras; aquele com quem a taça for encontrada será meu escravo; mas vós sereis inocentes.

And he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;'

11 E ntão eles se apressaram cada um a pôr em terra o seu saco, e cada um a abri-lo.

and they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag;

12 E o despenseiro buscou, começando pelo maior, e acabando pelo mais novo; e achou-se a taça no saco de Benjamim.

and he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin;

13 E ntão rasgaram os seus vestidos e, tendo cada um carregado o seu jumento, voltaram ã cidade.

and they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city.

14 E veio Judá com seus irmãos ã casa de José, pois ele ainda estava ali; e prostraram-se em terra diante dele.

And Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth;

15 L ogo lhes perguntou José: Que ação é esta que praticastes? não sabeis vós que um homem como eu pode, muito bem, adivinhar?

and Joseph saith to them, `What this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?'

16 R espondeu Judá: Que diremos a meu senhor? que falaremos? e como nos justificaremos? Descobriu Deus a iniqüidade de teus servos; eis que somos escravos de meu senhor, tanto nós como aquele em cuja mão foi achada a taça.

And Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;'

17 D isse José: Longe esteja eu de fazer isto; o homem em cuja mão a taça foi achada, aquele será meu servo; porém, quanto a vós, subi em paz para vosso pai.

and he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.'

18 E ntão Jud

And Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh.

19 M eu senhor perguntou a seus servos, dizendo: Tendes vós pai, ou irmão?

My lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother?

20 E respondemos a meu senhor: Temos pai, já velho, e há um filho da sua velhice, um menino pequeno; o irmão deste é morto, e ele ficou o único de sua mãe; e seu pai o ama.

and we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him.

21 E ntão tu disseste a teus servos: Trazei-mo, para que eu ponha os olhos sobre ele.

`And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him;

22 E quando respondemos a meu senhor: O menino não pode deixar o seu pai; pois se ele deixasse o seu pai, este morreria;

and we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died;

23 r eplicaste a teus servos: A menos que desça convosco vosso irmão mais novo, nunca mais vereis a minha face.

and thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face.

24 E ntão subimos a teu servo, meu pai, e lhe contamos as palavras de meu senhor.

`And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord;

25 D epois disse nosso pai: Tornai, comprai-nos um pouco de mantimento;

and our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food,

26 e lhe respondemos: Não podemos descer; mas, se nosso irmão menor for conosco, desceremos; pois não podemos ver a face do homem, se nosso irmão menor não estiver conosco.

and we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man's face, and our young brother not with us.

27 E ntão nos disse teu servo, meu pai: Vós sabeis que minha mulher me deu dois filhos;

`And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me,

28 u m saiu de minha casa e eu disse: certamente foi despedaçado, e não o tenho visto mais;

and the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since;

29 s e também me tirardes a este, e lhe acontecer algum desastre, fareis descer as minhas cãs com tristeza ao Seol.

when ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol.

30 A gora, pois, se eu for ter com o teu servo, meu pai, e o menino não estiver conosco, como a sua alma está ligada com a alma dele,

`And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul),

31 a contecerá que, vendo ele que o menino ali não está, morrerá; e teus servos farão descer as cãs de teu servo, nosso pai com tristeza ao Seol.

then it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol;

32 P orque teu servo se deu como fiador pelo menino para com meu pai, dizendo: Se eu to não trouxer de volta, serei culpado, para com meu pai para sempre.

for thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days.

33 A gora, pois, fique teu servo em lugar do menino como escravo de meu senhor, e que suba o menino com seus irmãos.

`And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren,

34 P orque, como subirei eu a meu pai, se o menino não for comigo? para que não veja eu o mal que sobrevirá a meu pai.

for how do I go up unto my father, and the youth not with me? lest I look on the evil which doth find my father.'
