1 N ão tenhas inveja dos homens malignos; nem desejes estar com eles;

Be not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

2 p orque o seu coração medita a violência; e os seus lábios falam maliciosamente.

For destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

3 C om a sabedoria se edifica a casa, e com o entendimento ela se estabelece;

By wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

4 e pelo conhecimento se encherão as câmaras de todas as riquezas preciosas e deleitáveis.

And by knowledge the inner parts are filled, all precious and pleasant wealth.

5 O sábio é mais poderoso do que o forte; e o inteligente do que o que possui a força.

Mighty the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

6 P orque com conselhos prudentes tu podes fazer a guerra; e há vitória na multidão dos conselheiros.

For by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance in a multitude of counsellors.

7 A sabedoria é alta demais para o insensato; ele não abre a sua boca na porta.

Wisdom high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

8 A quele que cuida em fazer o mal, mestre de maus intentos o chamarão.

Whoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

9 O desígnio do insensato é pecado; e abominável aos homens é o escarnecedor.

The thought of folly sin, And an abomination to man a scorner.

10 S e enfraqueces no dia da angústia, a tua força é pequena.

Thou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

11 L ivra os que estão sendo levados ã morte, detém os que vão tropeçando para a matança.

If delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

12 S e disseres: Eis que não o sabemos; porventura aquele que pesa os corações não o percebe? e aquele que guarda a tua vida não o sabe? e não retribuirá a cada um conforme a sua obra?

When thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

13 C ome mel, filho meu, porque é bom, e do favo de mel, que é doce ao teu paladar.

Eat my son, honey that good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

14 S abe que é assim a sabedoria para a tua alma: se a achares, haverá para ti recompensa, e não será malograda a tua esperança.

So the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

15 N ão te ponhas de emboscada, ó ímpio, contra a habitação do justo; nem assoles a sua pousada.

Lay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

16 P orque sete vezes cai o justo, e se levanta; mas os ímpios são derribados pela calamidade.

For seven doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

17 Q uando cair o teu inimigo, não te alegres, e quando tropeçar, não se regozije o teu coração;

In the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

18 p ara que o Senhor não o veja, e isso seja mau aos seus olhos, e desvie dele, a sua ira.

Lest Jehovah see, and evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

19 N ão te aflijas por causa dos malfeitores; nem tenhas inveja dos ímpios;

Fret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

20 p orque o maligno não tem futuro; e a lâmpada dos ímpios se apagará.

For there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

21 F ilho meu, teme ao Senhor, e ao rei; e não te entremetas com os que gostam de mudanças.

Fear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

22 P orque de repente se levantará a sua calamidade; e a ruína deles, quem a conhecerá?

For suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

23 T ambém estes são provérbios dos sábios: Fazer acepção de pessoas no juízo não é bom.

These also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

24 A quele que disser ao ímpio: Justo és; os povos o amaldiçoarão, as nações o detestarão;

Whoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

25 m as para os que julgam retamente haverá delícias, e sobre eles virá copiosa bênção.

And to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

26 O que responde com palavras retas beija os lábios.

Lips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

27 P repara os teus trabalhos de fora, apronta bem o teu campo; e depois edifica a tua casa.

Prepare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

28 N ão sejas testemunha sem causa contra o teu próximo; e não enganes com os teus lábios.

Be not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

29 N ão digas: Como ele me fez a mim, assim lhe farei a ele; pagarei a cada um segundo a sua obra.

Say not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

30 P assei junto ao campo do preguiçoso, e junto ã vinha do homem falto de entendimento;

Near the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

31 e eis que tudo estava cheio de cardos, e a sua superfície coberta de urtigas, e o seu muro de pedra estava derrubado.

And lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

32 O que tendo eu visto, o considerei; e, vendo-o, recebi instrução.

And I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

33 U m pouco para dormir, um pouco para toscanejar, um pouco para cruzar os braços em repouso;

A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

34 a ssim sobrevirá a tua pobreza como um salteador, e a tua necessidade como um homem armado.

And thy poverty hath come a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!
