1 D epois da morte de Saul, tendo Davi voltado da derrota dos amalequitas e estando há dois dias em Ziclague,

And it cometh to pass, after the death of Saul, that David hath returned from smiting the Amalekite, and David dwelleth in Ziklag two days,

2 a o terceiro dia veio um homem do arraial de Saul, com as vestes rasgadas e a cabeça coberta de terra; e, chegando ele a Davi, prostrou-se em terra e lhe fez reverência.

and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

3 P erguntou-lhe Davi: Donde vens? Ele lhe respondeu: Escapei do arraial de Israel.

And David saith to him, `Whence comest thou?' and he saith unto him, `Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.'

4 D avi ainda lhe indagou: Como foi lá isso? Dize-mo. Ao que ele lhe respondeu: O povo fugiu da batalha, e muitos do povo caíram, e morreram; também Saul e Jônatas, seu filho, foram mortos.

And David saith unto him, `What hath been the matter? declare, I pray thee, to me.' And he saith, that `The people hath fled from the battle, and also a multitude hath fallen of the people, and they die; and also Saul and Jonathan his son have died.'

5 P erguntou Davi ao mancebo que lhe trazia as novas: Como sabes que Saul e Jônatas, seu filho, são mortos?

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `How hast thou known that Saul and Jonathan his son dead?'

6 E ntão disse o mancebo que lhe dava a notícia: Achava-me por acaso no monte Gilbea, e eis que Saul se encostava sobre a sua lança; os carros e os cavaleiros apertavam com ele.

And the youth who is declaring to him saith, I happened to meet in mount Gilboa, and lo, Saul is leaning on his spear; and lo, the chariots and those possessing horses have followed him;

7 N isso, olhando ele para trás, viu-me e me chamou; e eu disse: Eis-me aqui.

and he turneth behind him, and seeth me, and calleth unto me, and I say, Here I.

8 A o que ele me perguntou: Quem és tu? E eu lhe respondi: Sou amalequita.

And he saith to me, Who thou? and I say unto him, An Amalekite I.'

9 E ntão ele me disse: Chega-te a mim, e mata-me, porque uma vertigem se apoderou de mim, e toda a minha vida está ainda em mim.

`And he saith unto me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and put me to death, for seized me hath the arrow, for all my soul still in me.

10 C heguei-me, pois, a ele, e o matei, porque bem sabia eu que ele não viveria depois de ter caído; e tomei a coroa que ele tinha na cabeça, e o bracelete que trazia no braço, e os trouxe aqui a meu senhor.

And I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which on his head, and the bracelet which on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.'

11 E ntão pegou Davi nas suas vestes e as rasgou; e assim fizeram também todos os homens que estavam com ele;

And David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who with him,

12 e prantearam, e choraram, e jejuaram até a tarde por Saul, e por Jônatas, seu filho, e pelo povo do Senhor, e pela casa de Israel, porque tinham caída ã espada.

and they mourn, and weep, and fast till the evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they have fallen by the sword.

13 P erguntou então Davi ao mancebo que lhe trouxera a nova: Donde és tu? Respondeu ele: Sou filho de um peregrino amalequita.

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `Whence thou?' and he saith, `Son of a sojourner, an Amalekite, I.'

14 D avi ainda lhe perguntou: Como não temeste estender a mão para matares o ungido do Senhor?

And David saith unto him, `How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the anointed of Jehovah?'

15 E ntão Davi, chamando um dos mancebos, disse-lhe: chega-te, e lança-te sobre ele. E o mancebo o feriu, de sorte que morreu.

And David calleth to one of the youths, and saith, `Draw nigh -- fall upon him;' and he smiteth him, and he dieth;

16 P ois Davi lhe dissera: O teu sangue seja sobre a tua cabeça, porque a tua própria boca testificou contra ti, dizendo: Eu matei o ungido do Senhor.

and David saith unto him, `Thy blood on thine own head, for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I -- I put to death the anointed of Jehovah.'

17 L amentou Davi a Saul e a Jônatas, seu filho, com esta lamentação,

And David lamenteth with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son;

18 m andando que fosse ensinada aos filhos de Judá; eis que está escrita no livro de Jasar:

and he saith to teach the sons of Judah `The Bow;' lo, it is written on the book of the Upright: --

19 T ua glória, ó Israel, foi morta sobre os teus altos! Como caíram os valorosos!

`The Roebuck, O Israel, On thy high places wounded; How have the mighty fallen!

20 N ão o noticieis em Gate, nem o publiqueis nas ruas de Asquelom; para que não se alegrem as filhas dos filisteus, para que não exultem as filhas dos incircuncisos.

Declare not in Gath, Proclaim not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest they rejoice -- The daughters of the Philistines, Lest they exult -- The daughters of the Uncircumcised!

21 V ós, montes de Gilboa, nem orvalho, nem chuva caia sobre, vós, ó campos de morte; pois ali desprezivelmente foi arrojado o escudo dos valorosos, o escudo de Saul, ungido com óleo.

Mountains of Gilboa! No dew nor rain be on you, And fields of heave-offerings! For there hath become loathsome The shield of the mighty, The shield of Saul -- without the anointed with oil.

22 D o sangue dos feridos, da gordura dos valorosos, nunca recuou o arco de Jônatas, nem voltou vazia a espada de Saul.

From the blood of the wounded, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan Hath not turned backward; And the sword of Saul doth not return empty.

23 S aul e Jônatas, tão queridos e amáveis na sua vida, também na sua morte não se separaram; eram mais ligeiros do que as águias, mais fortes do que os leões.

Saul and Jonathan! They are loved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they have not been parted. Than eagles they have been lighter, Than lions they have been mightier!

24 V ós, filhas de Israel, chorai por Saul, que vos vestia deliciosamente de escarlata, que vos punha sobre os vestidos adornos de ouro.

Daughters of Israel! for Saul weep ye, Who is clothing you scarlet with delights. Who is lifting up ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 C omo caíram os valorosos no meio da peleja!

How have the mighty fallen In the midst of the battle! Jonathan! on thy high places wounded!

26 A ngustiado estou por ti, meu irmão Jônatas; muito querido me eras! Maravilhoso me era o teu amor, ultrapassando o amor de mulheres.

I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women!

27 C omo caíram os valorosos, e pereceram as armas de guerra!

How have the mighty fallen, Yea, the weapons of war perish!'
