1 Y ACONTECIO después de la muerte de Saúl, que vuelto David de la derrota de los Amalecitas, estuvo dos días en Siclag:

And it cometh to pass, after the death of Saul, that David hath returned from smiting the Amalekite, and David dwelleth in Ziklag two days,

2 Y al tercer día acaeció, que vino uno del campo de Saúl, rotos sus vestidos, y tierra sobre su cabeza: y llegando á David, postróse en tierra, é hizo reverencia.

and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

3 Y preguntóle David: ¿De dónde vienes? Y él respondió: Heme escapado del campo de Israel.

And David saith to him, `Whence comest thou?' and he saith unto him, `Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.'

4 Y David le dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido? ruégote que me lo digas. Y él respondió: El pueblo huyó de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo cayeron y son muertos: también Saúl y Jonathán su hijo murieron.

And David saith unto him, `What hath been the matter? declare, I pray thee, to me.' And he saith, that `The people hath fled from the battle, and also a multitude hath fallen of the people, and they die; and also Saul and Jonathan his son have died.'

5 Y dijo David á aquel mancebo que le daba las nuevas: ¿Cómo sabes que Saúl es muerto, y Jonathán su hijo?

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `How hast thou known that Saul and Jonathan his son dead?'

6 Y el mancebo que le daba las nuevas respondió: Casualmente vine al monte de Gilboa, y hallé á Saúl que estaba recostado sobre su lanza, y venían tras él carros y gente de á caballo.

And the youth who is declaring to him saith, I happened to meet in mount Gilboa, and lo, Saul is leaning on his spear; and lo, the chariots and those possessing horses have followed him;

7 Y como él miró atrás, vióme y llamóme; y yo dije: Heme aquí.

and he turneth behind him, and seeth me, and calleth unto me, and I say, Here I.

8 Y él me dijo: ¿Quién eres tú? Y yo le respondí: Soy Amalecita.

And he saith to me, Who thou? and I say unto him, An Amalekite I.'

9 Y él me volvió á decir: Yo te ruego que te pongas sobre mí, y me mates, porque me toman angustias, y toda mi alma está aún en mí.

`And he saith unto me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and put me to death, for seized me hath the arrow, for all my soul still in me.

10 Y o entonces púseme sobre él, y matélo, porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída: y tomé la corona que tenía en su cabeza, y la ajorca que traía en su brazo, y helas traído acá á mi señor.

And I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which on his head, and the bracelet which on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.'

11 E ntonces David trabando de sus vestidos, rompiólos; y lo mismo hicieron los hombres que estaban con él.

And David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who with him,

12 Y lloraron y lamentaron, y ayunaron hasta la tarde, por Saúl y por Jonathán su hijo, y por el pueblo de Jehová, y por la casa de Israel: porque habían caído á cuchillo.

and they mourn, and weep, and fast till the evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they have fallen by the sword.

13 Y David dijo á aquel mancebo que le había traído las nuevas: ¿De dónde eres tú? Y él respondió: Yo soy hijo de un extranjero, Amalecita.

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `Whence thou?' and he saith, `Son of a sojourner, an Amalekite, I.'

14 Y díjole David: ¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido de Jehová?

And David saith unto him, `How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the anointed of Jehovah?'

15 E ntonces llamó David uno de los mancebos, y díjole: Llega, y mátalo. Y él lo hirió, y murió.

And David calleth to one of the youths, and saith, `Draw nigh -- fall upon him;' and he smiteth him, and he dieth;

16 Y David le dijo: Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues que tu boca atestiguó contra ti, diciendo: Yo maté al ungido de Jehová.

and David saith unto him, `Thy blood on thine own head, for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I -- I put to death the anointed of Jehovah.'

17 Y endechó David á Saúl y á Jonathán su hijo con esta endecha.

And David lamenteth with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son;

18 ( Dijo también que enseñasen al arco á los hijos de Judá. He aquí que está escrito en el libro del derecho:)

and he saith to teach the sons of Judah `The Bow;' lo, it is written on the book of the Upright: --

19 P erecido ha la gloria de Israel sobre tus montañas! ­Cómo han caído los valientes!

`The Roebuck, O Israel, On thy high places wounded; How have the mighty fallen!

20 N o lo denunciéis en Gath, No deis las nuevas en las plazas de Ascalón; Porque no se alegren las hijas de los Filisteos, Porque no salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos.

Declare not in Gath, Proclaim not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest they rejoice -- The daughters of the Philistines, Lest they exult -- The daughters of the Uncircumcised!

21 M ontes de Gilboa, Ni rocío ni lluvia caiga sobre vosotros, ni seáis tierras de ofrendas; Porque allí fué desechado el escudo de los valientes, El escudo de Saúl, como si no hubiera sido ungido con aceite.

Mountains of Gilboa! No dew nor rain be on you, And fields of heave-offerings! For there hath become loathsome The shield of the mighty, The shield of Saul -- without the anointed with oil.

22 S in sangre de muertos, sin grosura de valientes, El arco de Jonathán nunca volvió, Ni la espada de Saúl se tornó vacía.

From the blood of the wounded, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan Hath not turned backward; And the sword of Saul doth not return empty.

23 S aúl y Jonathán, amados y queridos en su vida, En su muerte tampoco fueron apartados: Más ligeros que águilas, Más fuertes que leones.

Saul and Jonathan! They are loved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they have not been parted. Than eagles they have been lighter, Than lions they have been mightier!

24 H ijas de Israel, llorad sobre Saúl, Que os vestía de escarlata en regocijos, Que adornaba vuestras ropas con ornamentos de oro.

Daughters of Israel! for Saul weep ye, Who is clothing you scarlet with delights. Who is lifting up ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 C ómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! ­Jonathán, muerto en tus alturas!

How have the mighty fallen In the midst of the battle! Jonathan! on thy high places wounded!

26 A ngustia tengo por ti, hermano mío Jonathán, Que me fuiste muy dulce: Más maravilloso me fué tu amor, Que el amor de las mujeres.

I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women!

27 C ómo han caído los valientes, Y perecieron las armas de guerra!

How have the mighty fallen, Yea, the weapons of war perish!'
