1 D espués de la muerte de Saúl, habiendo regresado David de derrotar a los Amalecitas, David permaneció dos días en Siclag.

And it cometh to pass, after the death of Saul, that David hath returned from smiting the Amalekite, and David dwelleth in Ziklag two days,

2 A l tercer día, un hombre llegó del campamento de Saúl con sus ropas rasgadas y polvo sobre su cabeza. Al llegar ante David, se inclinó a tierra y se postró.

and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

3 D avid le preguntó: “¿De dónde vienes?” “Me he escapado del campamento de Israel,” le respondió.

And David saith to him, `Whence comest thou?' and he saith unto him, `Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.'

4 D avid le preguntó: “¿Qué aconteció ? Te ruego que me lo digas.” Y él respondió: “El pueblo ha huido de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo han caído y han muerto; también Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto.”

And David saith unto him, `What hath been the matter? declare, I pray thee, to me.' And he saith, that `The people hath fled from the battle, and also a multitude hath fallen of the people, and they die; and also Saul and Jonathan his son have died.'

5 A sí que David le preguntó al joven que se lo había contado: “¿Cómo sabes que Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto?”

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `How hast thou known that Saul and Jonathan his son dead?'

6 E l joven que se lo había contado, dijo: “Yo estaba por casualidad en el Monte Gilboa, y vi que Saúl estaba apoyado sobre su lanza. Y que los carros y los jinetes lo perseguían de cerca.

And the youth who is declaring to him saith, I happened to meet in mount Gilboa, and lo, Saul is leaning on his spear; and lo, the chariots and those possessing horses have followed him;

7 A l mirar él hacia atrás, me vio y me llamó. Y dije: ‘Aquí estoy.’

and he turneth behind him, and seeth me, and calleth unto me, and I say, Here I.

8 Y él me dijo: ‘¿Quién eres?’ Y le respondí: ‘Soy un Amalecita.’

And he saith to me, Who thou? and I say unto him, An Amalekite I.'

9 E ntonces él me dijo: ‘Te ruego que te pongas junto a mí y me mates, pues la agonía se ha apoderado de mí, porque todavía estoy con vida.’

`And he saith unto me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and put me to death, for seized me hath the arrow, for all my soul still in me.

10 M e puse, pues, junto a él y lo maté, porque yo sabía que él no podía vivir después de haber caído. Tomé la corona que estaba en su cabeza y la pulsera que estaba en su brazo, y los he traído aquí a mi señor.”

And I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which on his head, and the bracelet which on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.'

11 E ntonces David agarró sus ropas y las rasgó, y así hicieron también todos los hombres que estaban con él.

And David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who with him,

12 S e lamentaron y lloraron y ayunaron hasta el atardecer por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán, por el pueblo del Señor y por la casa de Israel, porque habían caído a espada.

and they mourn, and weep, and fast till the evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they have fallen by the sword.

13 D avid le preguntó al joven que se lo había contado: “¿De dónde eres?” “Soy hijo de un extranjero, un Amalecita,” le respondió.

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `Whence thou?' and he saith, `Son of a sojourner, an Amalekite, I.'

14 Y David le dijo: “¿Cómo es que no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para destruir al ungido del Señor ?”

And David saith unto him, `How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the anointed of Jehovah?'

15 L lamando David a uno de los jóvenes, le dijo: “Ve, mátalo.” Y él lo hirió, y murió.

And David calleth to one of the youths, and saith, `Draw nigh -- fall upon him;' and he smiteth him, and he dieth;

16 Y David le dijo: “Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, porque tu boca ha testificado contra ti, al decir: ‘Yo he matado al ungido del Señor.’” Elegía de David por Saúl y Jonatán

and David saith unto him, `Thy blood on thine own head, for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I -- I put to death the anointed of Jehovah.'

17 E ntonces David entonó esta elegía por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán,

And David lamenteth with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son;

18 y ordenó que enseñaran a los hijos de Judá el cántico del arco; el cual está escrito en el Libro de Jaser:

and he saith to teach the sons of Judah `The Bow;' lo, it is written on the book of the Upright: --

19 “ Tu hermosura, oh Israel, ha perecido sobre tus montes. ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!

`The Roebuck, O Israel, On thy high places wounded; How have the mighty fallen!

20 N o lo anuncien en Gat, No lo proclamen en las calles de Ascalón; Para que no se regocijen las hijas de los Filisteos, Para que no se alegren las hijas de los incircuncisos.

Declare not in Gath, Proclaim not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest they rejoice -- The daughters of the Philistines, Lest they exult -- The daughters of the Uncircumcised!

21 O h montes de Gilboa, No haya sobre ustedes rocío ni lluvia, ni campos de ofrendas; Porque allí fue deshonrado el escudo de los valientes, El escudo de Saúl, no ungido con aceite.

Mountains of Gilboa! No dew nor rain be on you, And fields of heave-offerings! For there hath become loathsome The shield of the mighty, The shield of Saul -- without the anointed with oil.

22 D e la sangre de los muertos, de la grasa de los poderosos, El arco de Jonatán no volvía atrás, Y la espada de Saúl no volvía vacía.

From the blood of the wounded, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan Hath not turned backward; And the sword of Saul doth not return empty.

23 S aúl y Jonatán, amados y amables en su vida, Y en su muerte no fueron separados; Más ligeros eran que águilas, Más fuertes que leones.

Saul and Jonathan! They are loved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they have not been parted. Than eagles they have been lighter, Than lions they have been mightier!

24 H ijas de Israel, lloren por Saúl, Que las vestía lujosamente de escarlata, Que ponía adornos de oro en sus vestidos.

Daughters of Israel! for Saul weep ye, Who is clothing you scarlet with delights. Who is lifting up ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 ¡ Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! Jonatán, muerto en tus alturas.

How have the mighty fallen In the midst of the battle! Jonathan! on thy high places wounded!

26 E stoy afligido por ti, Jonatán, hermano mío; Tú me has sido muy estimado. Tu amor fue para mí más maravilloso Que el amor de las mujeres.

I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women!

27 ¡ Cómo han caído los valientes, Y perecido las armas de guerra!”

How have the mighty fallen, Yea, the weapons of war perish!'
