1 C uando te sientes a comer con un gobernante, Considera bien lo que está delante de ti,

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which before thee,

2 Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta Si eres hombre de mucho apetito.

And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou a man of appetite.

3 N o desees sus manjares, Porque es alimento engañoso.

Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it lying food.

4 N o te fatigues en adquirir riquezas, Deja de pensar en ellas.

Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.

5 C uando pones tus ojos en ella, ya no está. Porque la riqueza ciertamente se hace alas Como águila que vuela hacia los cielos.

For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.

6 N o comas el pan del egoísta, Ni desees sus manjares;

Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,

7 P ues como piensa dentro de sí, así es él. El te dice: “Come y bebe,” Pero su corazón no está contigo.

For as he hath thought in his soul, so he, `Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart not with thee.

8 V omitarás el bocado que has comido, Y malgastarás tus cumplidos.

Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that sweet.

9 N o hables a oídos del necio, Porque despreciará la sabiduría de tus palabras.

In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.

10 N o muevas el lindero antiguo, Ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos,

Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,

11 P orque su Redentor es fuerte; El defenderá su causa contra ti.

For their Redeemer strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.

12 A plica tu corazón a la instrucción Y tus oídos a las palabras del conocimiento.

Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.

13 N o escatimes la disciplina del niño; Aunque lo castigues con vara, no morirá.

Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.

14 L o castigarás con vara, Y librarás su alma del Seol.

Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.

15 H ijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, Mi corazón también se me alegrará;

My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,

16 Y se regocijarán mis entrañas Cuando tus labios hablen lo que es recto.

And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.

17 N o envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, Antes vive siempre en el temor del Señor.

Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But -- in the fear of Jehovah all the day.

18 P orque ciertamente hay un futuro, Y tu esperanza no será cortada.

For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.

19 E scucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio, Y dirige tu corazón por el buen camino.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,

20 N o estés con los bebedores de vino, Ni con los comilones de carne,

Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

21 P orque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecerán, Y la vagancia se vestirá de harapos.

For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.

22 E scucha a tu padre, que te engendró, Y no desprecies a tu madre cuando envejezca.

Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.

23 C ompra la verdad y no la vendas, Adquiere sabiduría, instrucción e inteligencia.

Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,

24 E l padre del justo se regocijará en gran manera, Y el que engendra un sabio se alegrará en él.

The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.

25 A légrense tu padre y tu madre, Y regocíjese la que te dio a luz.

Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.

26 D ame, hijo mío, tu corazón, Y que tus ojos se deleiten en mis caminos.

Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.

27 P orque fosa profunda es la ramera Y pozo angosto es la mujer desconocida.

For a harlot a deep ditch, And a strange woman a strait pit.

28 C iertamente ella acecha como ladrón, Y multiplica los infieles entre los hombres.

She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.

29 ¿ De quién son los ayes ? ¿De quién las tristezas? ¿De quién las luchas? ¿De quién las quejas? ¿De quién las heridas sin causa? ¿De quién los ojos enrojecidos?

Who hath wo? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

30 D e los que se demoran mucho con el vino, De los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.

Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.

31 N o mires al vino cuando rojea, Cuando resplandece en la copa; Entra suavemente,

See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.

32 P ero al final muerde como serpiente, Y pica como víbora.

Its latter end -- as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.

33 T us ojos verán cosas extrañas, Y tu corazón proferirá perversidades.

Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.

34 Y serás como el que se acuesta en medio del mar, O como el que se acuesta en lo alto de un mástil.

And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.

35 Y dirás: “Me hirieron, pero no me dolió; Me golpearon, pero no lo sentí. Cuando despierte, Volveré a buscar más.”

`They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake -- I seek it yet again!'
