1 E ntonces el Señor dijo a Josué: “No temas ni te acobardes. Toma contigo a todo el pueblo de guerra y levántate, sube a Hai. Mira, he entregado en tu mano al rey de Hai, su pueblo, su ciudad y su tierra.

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Fear not, nor be affrighted, take with thee all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,

2 H arás con Hai y con su rey lo mismo que hiciste con Jericó y con su rey. Tomarán para ustedes como botín solamente los despojos y el ganado. Prepara una emboscada a la ciudad detrás de ella.”

and thou hast done to Ai and to her king as thou hast done to Jericho and to her king; only, its spoil and its cattle ye spoil for yourselves; set for thee an ambush for the city at its rear.'

3 J osué se levantó con todo el pueblo de guerra para subir a Hai. Y escogió Josué 30, 000 hombres, valientes guerreros, y los envió de noche.

And Joshua riseth, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooseth thirty thousand men, mighty ones of valour, and sendeth them away by night,

4 J osué les dio órdenes, diciéndoles: “Miren, ustedes van a poner emboscada a la ciudad por detrás de ella. No se alejen mucho de la ciudad, sino estén todos alerta.

and commandeth them, saying, `See, ye are liers in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, ye go not very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,

5 E ntonces yo y todo el pueblo que me acompaña nos acercaremos a la ciudad. Cuando ellos salgan a nuestro encuentro como la primera vez, nosotros huiremos delante de ellos,

and I and all the people who with me draw near unto the city, and it hath come to pass when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

6 y ellos saldrán tras nosotros hasta que los hayamos alejado de la ciudad, porque dirán: ‘Huyen ante nosotros como la primera vez.’ Huiremos, pues, ante ellos.

and they have come out after us till we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

7 U stedes saldrán de la emboscada y se apoderarán de la ciudad, porque el Señor su Dios la entregará en sus manos.

and ye rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and Jehovah your God hath given it into your hand;

8 C uando hayan tomado la ciudad, le prenderán fuego. Lo harán conforme a la palabra del Señor. Miren que yo se lo he mandado.”

and it hath been, when ye capture the city, ye burn the city with fire, according to the word of Jehovah ye do, see, I have commanded you.'

9 J osué los envió, y fueron al lugar de la emboscada y se quedaron entre Betel (Casa de Dios) y Hai, al occidente de Hai; pero Josué pasó la noche entre el pueblo.

And Joshua sendeth them away, and they go unto the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodgeth on that night in the midst of the people.

10 J osué se levantó muy de mañana, pasó revista al pueblo y subió con los ancianos de Israel frente al pueblo de Hai.

And Joshua riseth early in the morning, and inspecteth the people, and goeth up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai;

11 E ntonces todos los hombres de guerra que estaban con él subieron y se acercaron, y llegaron frente a la ciudad, y acamparon al lado norte de Hai. Había un valle entre él y Hai.

and all the people of war who with him have gone up, and draw nigh and come in over-against the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley between him and Ai.

12 J osué tomó unos 5, 000 hombres y los puso en emboscada entre Betel y Hai, al occidente de la ciudad.

And he taketh about five thousand men, and setteth them an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;

13 Y apostaron al pueblo: todo el ejército que acampó al norte de la ciudad, y su retaguardia que acampó al occidente de la ciudad. Y Josué pasó aquella noche en medio del valle.

and they set the people, all the camp which on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and Joshua goeth on that night into the midst of the valley.

14 A l ver esto el rey de Hai, los hombres de la ciudad se apresuraron, se levantaron temprano y salieron para enfrentarse a Israel en batalla, él y todo su pueblo, en el lugar señalado frente a la llanura del desierto, sin saber que había una emboscada contra él por detrás de la ciudad.

And it cometh to pass, when the king of Ai seeth, that hasten, and rise early, and go out do the men of the city to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed season, at the front of the plain, and he hath not known that an ambush against him, on the rear of the city.

15 J osué y todo Israel se fingieron vencidos delante de ellos, y huyeron camino del desierto.

And Joshua and all Israel stricken before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,

16 Y todo el pueblo que estaba en la ciudad fue llamado para perseguirlos, y persiguieron a Josué, y se alejaron de la ciudad.

and all the people who in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,

17 N o quedó hombre en Hai o Betel que no saliera tras Israel, y dejaron la ciudad sin protección por perseguir a Israel.

and there hath not been left a man in Ai and Bethel who hath not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.

18 E ntonces el Señor dijo a Josué: “Extiende la jabalina que está en tu mano hacia Hai, porque la entregaré en tu mano.” Y Josué extendió hacia la ciudad la jabalina que estaba en su mano.

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Stretch out with the javelin which in thy hand towards Ai, for into thy hand I give it;' and Joshua stretcheth out with the javelin which in his hand toward the city,

19 L os que estaban emboscados se levantaron rápidamente de su lugar, y corrieron cuando él extendió su mano, entraron en la ciudad y se apoderaron de ella, inmediatamente le prendieron fuego a la ciudad.

and the ambush hath risen haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hasten, and burn the city with fire.

20 C uando los hombres de Hai se volvieron y miraron, vieron que el humo de la ciudad subía al cielo y no tenían lugar adónde huir, ni por un lado ni por el otro, porque el pueblo que iba huyendo hacia el desierto se volvió contra sus perseguidores.

And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and lo, the smoke of the city hath gone up unto the heavens, and there hath not been in them power to flee hither and thither -- and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer, --

21 A l ver Josué y todo Israel que los emboscados habían tomado la ciudad y que el humo de la ciudad subía, se volvieron y comenzaron a matar a los hombres de Hai.

and Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush hath captured the city, and that the smoke of the city hath gone up, and they turn back and smite the men of Ai;

22 Y los de la emboscada salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro, así que los de Hai quedaron en medio de Israel, unos por un lado y otros por el otro. Los mataron hasta no quedar de ellos ni sobreviviente ni fugitivo.

and these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that, and they smite them till he hath not left to them a remnant and escaped one;

23 P ero al rey de Hai lo tomaron vivo, y lo trajeron a Josué.

and the king of Ai they caught alive, and bring him near unto Joshua.

24 C uando Israel acabó de matar a todos los habitantes de Hai en el campo y en el desierto, adonde ellos los habían perseguido y todos habían caído a filo de espada hasta ser exterminados, todo Israel volvió a Hai y la hirieron a filo de espada.

And it cometh to pass, at Israel's finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and they fall all of them by the mouth of the sword till their consumption), that all Israel turn back to Ai, and smite it by the mouth of the sword;

25 E l total de los que cayeron aquel día, tanto hombres como mujeres, fue de 12, 000 todo el pueblo de Hai.

and all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand -- all men of Ai.

26 J osué no retiró su mano con la cual tenía extendida la jabalina, hasta que hubo exterminado por completo a todos los habitantes de Hai.

And Joshua hath not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin till that he hath devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;

27 S ólo el ganado y los despojos de aquella ciudad tomó Israel para sí como botín, conforme a la palabra que el Señor había ordenado a Josué.

only, the cattle and the spoil of that city have Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of Jehovah which He commanded Joshua.

28 J osué incendió la ciudad de Hai y la convirtió en un montón de ruinas para siempre, en una desolación hasta el día de hoy.

And Joshua burneth Ai, and maketh it a heap age-during -- a desolation unto this day;

29 T ambién colgó al rey de Hai en un árbol hasta la tarde. A la puesta del sol Josué dio orden que bajaran su cadáver del árbol. Lo arrojaron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras que permanece hasta el día de hoy. La Lectura de la Ley

and the king of Ai he hath hanged on the tree till even-time, and at the going in of the sun hath Joshua commanded, and they take down his carcase from the tree, and cast it unto the opening of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones till this day.

30 E ntonces Josué edificó un altar al Señor, Dios de Israel, en el Monte Ebal,

Then doth Joshua build an altar to Jehovah, God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

31 t al como Moisés, siervo del Señor, había ordenado a los Israelitas, como está escrito en el Libro de la Ley de Moisés, un altar de piedras sin labrar, sobre las cuales nadie había alzado herramienta de hierro. Sobre él ofrecieron holocaustos al Señor y sacrificaron ofrendas de paz.

as Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses -- an altar of whole stones, over which he hath not waved iron -- and they cause to go up upon it burnt-offerings to Jehovah, and sacrifice peace-offerings;

32 A llí, sobre las piedras, Josué escribió una copia de la ley que Moisés había escrito, en presencia de los Israelitas.

and he writeth there on the stones the copy of the law of Moses, which he hath written in the presence of the sons of Israel.

33 T odo Israel, con sus ancianos, oficiales y jueces, estaba de pie a ambos lados del arca, delante de los sacerdotes Levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto del Señor, tanto el extranjero como el nativo. La mitad de ellos estaba frente al Monte Gerizim, y la otra mitad frente al Monte Ebal, tal como Moisés, siervo del Señor, había ordenado la primera vez, para que bendijeran al pueblo de Israel.

And all Israel, and its elders, and authorities, and its judges, are standing on this side and on that of the ark, over-against the priests, the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the native, half of them over-against mount Gerizim, and the half of them over-against mount Ebal, as Moses servant of Jehovah commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.

34 D espués Josué leyó todas las palabras de la ley, la bendición y la maldición, conforme a todo lo que está escrito en el Libro de la Ley.

And afterwards he hath proclaimed all the words of the law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the book of the law;

35 N o hubo ni una palabra de todo lo que había ordenado Moisés que Josué no leyera delante de toda la asamblea de Israel, incluyendo las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que vivían entre ellos.

there hath not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua hath not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.
