1 H ermanos míos, que no se hagan maestros muchos de ustedes, sabiendo que recibiremos un juicio más severo (mayor condenación).

Many teachers become not, my brethren, having known that greater judgment we shall receive,

2 P orque todos fallamos (ofendemos) de muchas maneras. Si alguien no falla en lo que dice, es un hombre perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo.

for we all make many stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one a perfect man, able to bridle also the whole body;

3 A hora bien, si ponemos el freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, dirigimos también todo su cuerpo.

lo, the bits we put into the mouths of the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about;

4 M iren también las naves; aunque son tan grandes e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son, sin embargo, dirigidas mediante un timón muy pequeño por donde la voluntad del piloto quiere.

lo, also the ships, being so great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm, whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel,

5 A sí también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, y sin embargo, se jacta de grandes cosas. ¡Pues qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeño fuego!

so also the tongue is a little member, and doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle!

6 T ambién la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, la cual contamina todo el cuerpo, es encendida por el infierno e inflama el curso de nuestra vida.

and the tongue a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

7 P orque toda clase de fieras y de aves, de reptiles y de animales marinos, se puede domar y ha sido domado por el ser humano,

For every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature,

8 p ero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua. Es un mal turbulento y lleno de veneno mortal.

and the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

9 C on ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que han sido hechos a la imagen de Dios.

with it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God;

10 D e la misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así.

out of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen;

11 ¿ Acaso una fuente echa agua dulce y amarga por la misma abertura?

doth the fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter?

12 ¿ Acaso, hermanos míos, puede una higuera producir aceitunas, o una vid higos? Tampoco la fuente de agua salada puede producir agua dulce. Sabiduría de lo Alto

is a fig-tree able, my brethren, olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water to make.

13 ¿ Quién es sabio y entendido entre ustedes? Que muestre por su buena conducta sus obras en sabia mansedumbre.

Who wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom,

14 P ero si tienen celos amargos y ambición personal en su corazón, no sean arrogantes y mientan así contra la verdad.

and if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth;

15 E sta sabiduría no es la que viene de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, natural, diabólica.

this wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like,

16 P orque donde hay celos y ambición personal, allí hay confusión y toda cosa mala.

for where zeal and rivalry, there is insurrection and every evil matter;

17 P ero la sabiduría de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, amable, condescendiente (tolerante), llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin vacilación, sin hipocresía.

and the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: --

18 Y la semilla cuyo fruto es la justicia se siembra en paz por aquéllos que hacen la paz.

and the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to those making peace.
