1 C uando Jacob siguió su camino, los ángeles de Dios le salieron al encuentro.

And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;

2 Y al verlos, Jacob dijo: “Este es el campamento de Dios.” Por eso le puso a aquel lugar el nombre de Mahanaim (Dos Campamentos).

and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.'

3 E ntonces Jacob envió mensajeros delante de sí a su hermano Esaú, a la tierra de Seir, región de Edom.

And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,

4 Y les dio órdenes, diciendo: “Así dirán a mi señor Esaú: ‘Así dice su siervo Jacob: “He morado con Labán, y allí me he quedado hasta ahora.

and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;

5 T engo bueyes, asnos y rebaños, siervos y siervas; y envío a avisar a mi señor, para hallar gracia ante sus ojos.”’”

and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.'

6 L os mensajeros regresaron a Jacob, diciendo: “Fuimos a su hermano Esaú, y él también viene a su encuentro, y 400 hombres con él.”

And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;'

7 J acob tuvo mucho temor y se angustió. Dividió en dos campamentos la gente que estaba con él, y las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos,

and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,

8 y dijo: “Si Esaú viene a un campamento y lo ataca, el campamento que queda escapará.”

and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'

9 E ntonces Jacob dijo: “Oh Dios de mi padre Abraham y Dios de mi padre Isaac, oh Señor, que me dijiste: ‘Vuelve a tu tierra y a tus familiares, y Yo te haré prosperar.’

And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:

10 I ndigno soy de toda misericordia y de toda la fidelidad que has mostrado a Tu siervo. Porque con sólo mi cayado crucé este Jordán, y ahora he llegado a tener dos campamentos.

I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

11 L íbrame, Te ruego, de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque yo le tengo miedo, no sea que venga y me hiera a mí y a las madres con los hijos.

`Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons;

12 P orque Tú me dijiste: ‘De cierto te haré prosperar, y haré tu descendencia como la arena del mar que no se puede contar por su gran cantidad.’”

and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'

13 J acob pasó la noche allí. Entonces de lo que tenía consigo escogió un presente para su hermano Esaú:

And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:

14 d oscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,

she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty,

15 t reinta camellas criando con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez asnos.

suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;

16 J acob los entregó a sus siervos, cada manada aparte, y dijo a sus siervos: “Pasen delante de mí, y pongan un buen espacio entre manada y manada.”

and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.'

17 Y ordenó al primero: “Cuando mi hermano Esaú te encuentre y te pregunte: ‘¿De quién eres y adónde vas, y de quién son estos animales que van delante de ti?’

And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose thou? and whither goest thou? and whose these before thee?

18 e ntonces responderás: ‘Son de su siervo Jacob. Es un presente enviado a mi señor Esaú. Mire, él también viene detrás de nosotros.’”

then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also behind us.'

19 T ambién dio órdenes al segundo y al tercero, y a todos los que iban tras las manadas, diciendo: “De esta manera hablarán a Esaú cuando lo encuentren,

And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,

20 y dirán: ‘Mire, su siervo Jacob también viene detrás de nosotros.’” Pues dijo: “Lo apaciguaré con el presente que va delante de mí. Y después veré su rostro; quizá me acepte.”

and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob behind us;' for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;'

21 E l presente pasó, pues, delante de él, y Jacob durmió aquella noche en el campamento. Jacob Lucha con el Angel de Dios

and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.

22 A quella misma noche Jacob se levantó, y tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos siervas y a sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Jaboc.

And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;

23 D espués que los tomó y los hizo pasar el arroyo, hizo pasar también todo lo que tenía.

and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.

24 J acob se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta rayar el alba.

And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;

25 C uando vio que no podía prevalecer contra Jacob, lo tocó en la coyuntura del muslo, y se dislocó la coyuntura del muslo de Jacob mientras luchaba con él.

and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;

26 E ntonces el hombre dijo: “Suéltame porque raya el alba.” “No te soltaré si no me bendices,” le respondió Jacob.

and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.'

27 “ ¿Cómo te llamas?” le preguntó el hombre. “Jacob,” le respondió él.

And he saith unto him, `What thy name?' and he saith, `Jacob.'

28 Y el hombre dijo: “Tu nombre ya no será Jacob, sino Israel (El que lucha con Dios), porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has prevalecido.”

And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.'

29 E ntonces Jacob le dijo: “Dame a conocer ahora tu nombre.” “¿Para qué preguntas por mi nombre ?” le respondió el hombre. Y lo bendijo allí.

And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, `Why this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there.

30 Y Jacob le puso a aquel lugar el nombre de Peniel (El rostro de Dios), porque dijo: “He visto a Dios cara a cara, y ha sido preservada mi vida.”

And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;'

31 E l sol salía cuando Jacob cruzaba Peniel, y cojeaba de su muslo.

and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;

32 P or eso, hasta hoy, los Israelitas no comen el tendón de la cadera que está en la coyuntura del muslo, porque el hombre tocó la coyuntura del muslo de Jacob en el tendón de la cadera.

therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank.
