1 P or aquellos días, al multiplicarse el número de los discípulos, surgió una queja de parte de los Judíos Helenistas en contra de los Judíos nativos, porque sus viudas eran desatendidas en la distribución diaria de los alimentos.

And in these days, the disciples multiplying, there came a murmuring of the Hellenists at the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration,

2 E ntonces los doce (apóstoles) convocaron a la congregación (multitud) de los discípulos, y dijeron: “No es conveniente que nosotros descuidemos la palabra de Dios para servir mesas.

and the twelve, having called near the multitude of the disciples, said, `It is not pleasing that we, having left the word of God, do minister at tables;

3 P or tanto, hermanos, escojan de entre ustedes siete hombres de buena reputación, llenos del Espíritu Santo y de sabiduría, a quienes podamos encargar esta tarea.

look out, therefore, brethren, seven men of you who are well testified of, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may set over this necessity,

4 Y nosotros nos entregaremos a la oración y al ministerio (al servicio) de la palabra.”

and we to prayer, and to the ministration of the word, will give ourselves continually.'

5 L o propuesto tuvo la aprobación de toda la congregación, y escogieron a Esteban, un hombre lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo, y a Felipe, a Prócoro, a Nicanor, a Timón, a Parmenas y a Nicolás, un prosélito (Gentil convertido al Judaísmo) de Antioquía.

And the thing was pleasing before all the multitude, and they did choose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch,

6 A éstos los presentaron ante los apóstoles, y después de orar, pusieron sus manos sobre ellos.

whom they did set before the apostles, and they, having prayed, laid on them hands.

7 Y la palabra de Dios crecía, y el número de los discípulos se multiplicaba en gran manera en Jerusalén, y muchos de los sacerdotes obedecían a la fe. Arresto de Esteban y su Defensa

And the word of God did increase, and the number of the disciples did multiply in Jerusalem exceedingly; a great multitude also of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 E steban, lleno de gracia y de poder, hacía grandes prodigios y señales (milagros) entre el pueblo.

And Stephen, full of faith and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people,

9 P ero algunos de la sinagoga llamada de los Libertos (Esclavos Libertados), incluyendo tanto Cireneos como Alejandrinos, y algunos de Cilicia y de Asia (provincia occidental de Asia Menor), se levantaron y discutían con Esteban.

and there arose certain of those of the synagogue, called of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia, and Asia, disputing with Stephen,

10 P ero no podían resistir a la sabiduría y al Espíritu con que hablaba.

and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking;

11 E ntonces, en secreto persuadieron a algunos hombres para que dijeran: “Le hemos oído hablar palabras blasfemas contra Moisés y contra Dios.”

then they suborned men, saying -- `We have heard him speaking evil sayings in regard to Moses and God.'

12 Y alborotaron al pueblo, a los ancianos y a los escribas, y cayendo sobre él, lo arrestaron y lo trajeron al Concilio (Sanedrín).

They did stir up also the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and having come upon, they caught him, and brought to the sanhedrim;

13 P resentaron testigos falsos que dijeron: “Este hombre continuamente habla en contra de este lugar santo y de la Ley;

they set up also false witnesses, saying, `This one doth not cease to speak evil sayings against this holy place and the law,

14 p orque le hemos oído decir que este Nazareno, Jesús, destruirá este lugar, y cambiará las tradiciones que Moisés nos dejó.”

for we have heard him saying, That this Jesus the Nazarean shall overthrow this place, and shall change the customs that Moses delivered to us;'

15 Y al fijar la mirada en él, todos los que estaban sentados en el Concilio (Sanedrín) vieron su rostro como el rostro de un ángel.

and gazing at him, all those sitting in the sanhedrim saw his face as it were the face of a messenger.
