1 Y sucedió que cuando se enteraron todos los reyes que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, en los montes, en los valles y en toda la costa del Mar Grande hacia el Líbano, los reyes de los Hititas, Amorreos, Cananeos, Ferezeos, Heveos y Jebuseos,

And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear --

2 a una se reunieron y se pusieron de acuerdo para pelear contra Josué y contra Israel.

that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel -- one mouth.

3 C uando los habitantes de Gabaón también se enteraron de lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai,

And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

4 e llos usaron de astucia y fueron como embajadores, y llevaron alforjas viejas sobre sus asnos, y odres de vino viejos, rotos y remendados,

and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

5 y sandalias gastadas y remendadas en sus pies, y vestidos viejos sobre sí. Todo el pan de su provisión estaba seco y desmenuzado.

and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry -- it was crumbs.

6 V inieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los hombres de Israel: “Hemos venido de un país lejano. Hagan, pues, pacto con nosotros.”

And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, `From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

7 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a los Heveos: “Quizá habitan en nuestra tierra, ¿cómo, pues, haremos pacto con ustedes ?”

and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, `It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

8 R espondieron ellos a Josué: “Somos tus siervos.” Y Josué les preguntó: “¿Quiénes son, y de dónde vienen?”

and they say unto Joshua, `Thy servants we.' And Joshua saith unto them, `Who ye? and whence come ye?'

9 E llos le dijeron: “Tus siervos han venido de un país muy lejano a causa de la fama del Señor tu Dios. Porque hemos oído hablar de El, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto,

And they say unto him, `From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

10 y de todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los Amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.

and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who in Ashtaroth.

11 Y nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestro país nos dijeron: ‘Tomen provisiones en su mano para el camino, vayan a su encuentro y díganles: “Somos siervos de ustedes; hagan, pues, pacto con nosotros.”’

`And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we, and now, make with us a covenant;

12 “ Este pan nuestro estaba caliente cuando lo sacamos de nuestras casas para provisión el día que salimos para venir a ustedes, pero ahora está seco y desmenuzado.

this our bread -- hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

13 E stos odres de vino que llenamos eran nuevos, y vean que están rotos. Estos vestidos nuestros y nuestras sandalias están gastados a causa de lo muy largo del camino.”

and these the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

14 Y los hombres de Israel tomaron de sus provisiones, y no pidieron el consejo del Señor.

And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

15 J osué hizo paz con ellos y celebró pacto con ellos para conservarles la vida. También los jefes de la congregación se lo juraron.

and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

16 P ero sucedió que después de tres días de haber hecho pacto con ellos, los Israelitas se enteraron de que eran vecinos y que habitaban en su tierra.

And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they their neighbours -- that in their midst they are dwelling.

17 E ntonces salieron los Israelitas, y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades. Sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat Jearim.

And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day -- and their cities Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim --

18 L os Israelitas no los mataron porque los jefes de la congregación les habían hecho un juramento por el Señor, Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los jefes.

and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

19 P ero todos los jefes dijeron a la congregación: “Nosotros les hemos jurado por el Señor, Dios de Israel, y ahora no podemos tocarlos.

And all the princes say unto all the company, `We -- we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

20 E sto es lo que haremos con ellos: los dejaremos vivir, para que no venga sobre nosotros la ira por el juramento que les hemos hecho.”

this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

21 Y los jefes les dijeron: “Déjenlos vivir.” Y ellos fueron leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación, tal como los jefes les habían dicho. Juicio contra los Gabaonitas

And the princes say unto them, `They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

22 E ntonces Josué los mandó llamar y les habló: “¿Por qué nos han engañado, diciendo: ‘Habitamos muy lejos de ustedes,’ cuando habitan en nuestra tierra ?

And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

23 A hora pues, malditos son y nunca dejarán de ser esclavos, leñadores y aguadores para la casa de mi Dios.”

and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

24 Y ellos respondieron a Josué: “Porque ciertamente tus siervos fueron informados de que el Señor tu Dios había ordenado a Su siervo Moisés que les diera toda la tierra, y que destruyera a todos los habitantes de la tierra delante de ustedes. Por tanto, temimos en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de ustedes, y hemos hecho esto.

And they answer Joshua and say, `Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

25 A hora pues, estamos en tus manos. Haz con nosotros lo que te parezca bueno y justo.”

and now, lo, we in thy hand, as good, and as right in thine eyes to do to us -- do.'

26 Y así hizo él con ellos, y los libró de las manos de los Israelitas, y éstos no los mataron.

And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

27 Y aquel día Josué los hizo leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar del Señor, en el lugar que El escogiera, hasta el día de hoy.

and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.
