1 Y aconteció que en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, subió Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las tomó.

And it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.

2 E l rey de Asiria envió desde Laquis a Jerusalén, al Rabsaces con un gran ejército, contra el rey Ezequías. Y se colocó junto al acueducto del estanque superior que está en la calzada del campo del Batanero (del Lavandero).

And the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,

3 E ntonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, mayordomo de la casa real, el escriba Sebna y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf, salieron a recibirlo.

and go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.

4 Y el Rabsaces les dijo: “Digan ahora a Ezequías: ‘Así dice el gran rey, el rey de Asiria: “¿Qué confianza es ésta que tú tienes ?

And Rabshakeh saith unto them, `Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, `Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What this confidence in which thou hast confided?

5 Y o digo: ‘ Tu consejo y poderío para la guerra sólo son palabras vacías.’ Ahora pues, ¿en quién confías que te has rebelado contra mí ?

I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?

6 Y o sé que tú confías en el báculo de esta caña quebrada, es decir, en Egipto, en el cual, si un hombre se apoya, penetrará en su mano y la traspasará. Así es Faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que confían en él.

`Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed -- on Egypt -- which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it -- so Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

7 P ero si me dicen: ‘Nosotros confiamos en el Señor nuestro Dios,’ ¿no es El aquél cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares Ezequías ha quitado y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: ‘Adoren delante de este altar’?

`And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?

8 A hora pues, te ruego que llegues a un acuerdo con mi señor el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré 2, 000 caballos, si por tu parte puedes poner jinetes sobre ellos.

`And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.

9 ¿ Cómo, pues, puedes rechazar a un oficial de los menores de los siervos de mi señor, y confiar en Egipto para tener carros y hombres de a caballo ?

And how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?

10 ¿ He subido ahora sin el consentimiento del Señor contra esta tierra para destruirla? El Señor me dijo: ‘Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela.’”’”

And now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'

11 E ntonces Eliaquim, Sebna y Joa dijeron al Rabsaces: “Le rogamos que usted hable a sus siervos en Arameo porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no nos hable en la lengua de Judá (Hebreo) a oídos del pueblo que está sobre la muralla.”

And Eliakim saith -- and Shebna and Joah -- unto Rabshakeh, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us Jewish, in the ears of the people who on the wall.'

12 P ero el Rabsaces dijo: “¿Acaso me ha enviado mi señor para hablar estas palabras sólo a tu señor y a ti, y no a los hombres que están sentados en la muralla, condenados a comer sus propios excrementos y a beber su propia orina con ustedes?”

And Rabshakeh saith, `Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men -- those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'

13 E l Rabsaces se puso en pie, gritó a gran voz en la lengua de Judá: “Escuchen las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.

And Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice Jewish, and saith, `Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:

14 A sí dice el rey: ‘Que no los engañe Ezequías, porque él no los podrá librar.

Thus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;

15 Q ue tampoco Ezequías los haga confiar en el Señor, diciendo: “Ciertamente el Señor nos librará, y esta ciudad no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria.’”

and let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

16 ‘ No escuchen a Ezequías, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: “Hagan la paz conmigo y salgan a mí, y coma cada uno de su vid y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual de las aguas de su cisterna,

`Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,

17 h asta que yo venga y los lleve a una tierra como su tierra, tierra de grano y de vino nuevo, tierra de pan y de viñas.’

till my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;

18 C uidado, no sea que Ezequías los engañe, diciendo: “El Señor nos librará.” ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?

lest Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. `Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

19 ¿ Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arfad ? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim ? ¿Cuándo han librado ellos a Samaria de mi mano?

Where the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 ¿ Quiénes de entre todos los dioses de estas tierras han librado su tierra de mi mano, para que el Señor libre a Jerusalén de mi mano?’”

Who among all the gods of these lands they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

21 P ero ellos se quedaron callados y no le respondieron palabra alguna; porque el rey había dado un mandato al pueblo diciéndole: “No le respondan.”

And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.'

22 E ntonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, mayordomo de la casa real, el escriba Sebna y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf, fueron a Ezequías con sus vestidos rasgados, y le relataron las palabras del Rabsaces.

And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.
