1 Y Sefatías, hijo de Matán, Gedalías, hijo de Pasur, Jucal, hijo de Selemías, y Pasur, hijo de Malquías, oyeron las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo:

And Shephatiah son of Mattan, and Gedaliah son of Pashhur, and Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah, hear the words that Jeremiah is speaking unto all the people, saying,

2 “ Así dice el Señor: ‘El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, de hambre o de pestilencia, pero el que se pase a los Caldeos, vivirá y tendrá su vida por botín y seguirá viviendo.’

`Thus said Jehovah: He who is remaining in this city dieth, by sword, by famine, and by pestilence, and he who is going forth unto the Chaldeans liveth, and his soul hath been to him for a prey, and he liveth.

3 A sí dice el Señor: ‘Ciertamente esta ciudad será entregada en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y él la tomará.’”

Thus said Jehovah: This city is certainly given into the hand of the force of the king of Babylon, and he hath captured it.'

4 E ntonces dijeron los oficiales al rey: “Den muerte ahora a este hombre, porque él desanima a los hombres de guerra que quedan en esta ciudad y a todo el pueblo diciéndoles tales palabras. Este hombre no busca el bien de este pueblo, sino el mal.”

And the heads say unto the king, `Let, we pray thee, this man be put to death, because that he is making feeble the hands of the men of war, who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking unto them according to these words, for this man is not seeking for the peace of this people, but for its evil.'

5 E l rey Sedequías dijo: “El está en sus manos; pues el rey nada puede hacer contra ustedes.”

And the king Zedekiah saith, `Lo, he in your hand: for the king is not able for you anything.'

6 E ntonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías, y bajándolo con cuerdas lo echaron en la cisterna de Malaquías, hijo del rey, que había en el patio de la guardia. En la cisterna no había agua, sino lodo, así que Jeremías se hundió en el lodo.

And they take Jeremiah, and cast him into the pit of Malchiah son of the king, that in the court of the prison, and they send down Jeremiah with cords; and in the pit there is no water, but mire, and Jeremiah sinketh in the mire.

7 E bed Melec el Etíope, eunuco del palacio del rey, oyó que habían echado a Jeremías en la cisterna. Estando el rey sentado a la Puerta de Benjamín,

And Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch who in the king's house, heareth that they have put Jeremiah into the pit; and the king is sitting at the gate of Benjamin,

8 s alió Ebed Melec del palacio real y habló al rey y le dijo:

and Ebed-Melech goeth forth from the king's house, and speaketh unto the king, saying,

9 “ Oh rey, mi señor, estos hombres han obrado mal en todo lo que han hecho al profeta Jeremías echándolo en la cisterna. El morirá donde está a causa del hambre, porque no hay más pan en la ciudad.”

`My lord, O king, these men have done evil all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the pit, and he dieth in his place because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.'

10 E ntonces el rey ordenó al etíope Ebed Melec: “Toma bajo tu mando tres hombres de aquí, y saca al profeta Jeremías de la cisterna antes que muera.”

And the king commandeth Ebed-Melech the Cushite, saying, `Take with thee from this thirty men, and thou hast brought up Jeremiah the prophet from the pit, before he dieth.'

11 E bed Melec tomó a los hombres bajo su mando, entró en el palacio del rey al lugar debajo del cuarto del tesoro y tomó de allí ropas raídas y trapos viejos, y con sogas los bajó a Jeremías en la cisterna.

And Ebed-Melech taketh the men with him, and entereth the house of the king, unto the place of the treasury, and taketh thence worn-out clouts, and worn-out rags, and sendeth them unto Jeremiah unto the pit by cords.

12 Y el etíope Ebed Melec dijo a Jeremías: “Ponte ahora estas ropas raídas y trapos bajo tus brazos, debajo de las sogas”; y así lo hizo Jeremías.

And Ebed-Melech the Cushite saith unto Jeremiah, `Put, I pray thee, the worn-out clouts and rags under thine arm-holes, at the place of the cords,' and Jeremiah doth so,

13 T iraron de Jeremías con las sogas y lo subieron de la cisterna. Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia. El Rey Consulta a Jeremías

and they draw out Jeremiah with cords, and bring him up out of the pit, and Jeremiah dwelleth in the court of the prison.

14 E ntonces el rey Sedequías mandó que le trajeran al profeta Jeremías a la entrada tercera que había en la casa del Señor; y el rey le dijo a Jeremías: “Voy a preguntarte una cosa; no me ocultes nada.”

And the king Zedekiah sendeth, and taketh Jeremiah the prophet unto him, unto the third entrance that in the house of Jehovah, and the king saith unto Jeremiah, `I am asking thee a thing, do not hide from me anything.'

15 Y Jeremías dijo a Sedequías: “Si se la hago saber a usted, ¿no es cierto que me matará? Además si le doy un consejo, no me escuchará.”

And Jeremiah saith unto Zedekiah, `When I declare to thee, dost thou not surely put me to death? and when I counsel thee, thou dost not hearken unto me.'

16 P ero el rey Sedequías le juró en secreto a Jeremías: “Vive el Señor, que nos dio esta vida, que ciertamente no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de esos hombres que buscan tu vida.”

And the king Zedekiah sweareth unto Jeremiah in secret, saying, `Jehovah liveth, He who made for us this soul, I do not put thee to death, nor give thee unto the hand of these men who are seeking thy soul.'

17 E ntonces Jeremías dijo a Sedequías: “Así dice el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘Si en verdad usted se pasa a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, entonces vivirá, y esta ciudad no será incendiada, y usted y su casa vivirán.

And Jeremiah saith unto Zedekiah, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, God of Israel: If thou dost certainly go forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, then hath thy soul lived, and this city is not burned with fire, yea, thou hast lived, thou and thy house.

18 P ero si usted no se pasa a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, entonces esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los Caldeos; y ellos la incendiarán y usted no escapará de su mano.’”

And if thou dost not go forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, then hath this city been given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they have burnt it with fire, and thou dost not escape from their hand.'

19 E ntonces el rey Sedequías respondió a Jeremías: “Tengo temor de los Judíos que se han pasado a los Caldeos, no sea que me entreguen en sus manos y me maltraten.”

And the king Zedekiah saith unto Jeremiah, `I am fearing the Jews who have fallen unto the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hand, and they have insulted me.'

20 P ero Jeremías dijo: “No lo entregarán. Le ruego que escuche la voz del Señor en lo que le digo, y le irá bien y vivirá.

And Jeremiah saith, `They do not give thee up; hearken, I pray thee, to the voice of Jehovah, to that which I am speaking unto thee, and it is well for thee, and thy soul doth live.

21 P ero si sigue usted rehusando pasarse, ésta es la palabra que el Señor me ha mostrado:

`And if thou art refusing to go forth, this the thing that Jehovah hath shewn me:

22 ‘ Todas las mujeres que quedan en el palacio del rey de Judá, serán llevadas a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, y ellas dirán: “Te han engañado y han prevalecido contra ti; Tus buenos amigos, Mientras tus pies estaban hundidos en el lodo, Se volvieron atrás.”

That, lo, all the women who have been left in the house of the king of Judah are brought forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, and lo, they are saying: Persuaded thee, and prevailed against thee, Have thine allies, Sunk into mire have thy feet, They have been turned backward.

23 ‘ Todas sus mujeres y sus hijos serán llevados a los Caldeos. Tampoco usted escapará de sus manos, sino que será apresado por la mano del rey de Babilonia, y esta ciudad será incendiada.’”

`And all thy wives, and thy sons, are brought forth unto the Chaldeans, and thou dost not escape from their hand, for by the hand of the king of Babylon thou art caught, and this city is burnt with fire.'

24 E ntonces Sedequías dijo a Jeremías: “Que nadie sepa de estas palabras, y no morirás.

And Zedekiah saith unto Jeremiah, `Let no man know of these words, and thou dost not die;

25 P ero si los oficiales se enteran de que he hablado contigo, y vienen a ti y te dicen: ‘Dinos ahora lo que dijiste al rey y lo que el rey te dijo, no nos lo ocultes, y no te mataremos,’

and when the heads hear that I have spoken with thee, and they have come in unto thee, and have said unto thee, Declare to us, we pray thee, what thou didst speak unto the king, do not hide from us, and we do not put thee to death, and what the king spake unto thee,

26 t ú les dirás: ‘Presentaba al rey mi súplica de que no me hiciera volver a la casa de Jonatán, a morir allí.’”

then thou hast said unto them, I am causing my supplication to fall before the king, not to cause me to return to the house of Jonathan, to die there.'

27 L uego vinieron todos los oficiales a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. Y él les informó conforme a todas estas palabras que el rey le había ordenado; y no volvieron a preguntarle, ya que de la conversación nadie había oído nada.

And all the heads come in unto Jeremiah, and ask him, and he declareth to them according to all these words that the king commanded, and they keep silent from him, for the matter was not heard;

28 A sí Jeremías quedó en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue tomada.

and Jeremiah dwelleth in the court of the prison till the day that Jerusalem hath been captured, and he was when Jerusalem was captured.
