1 M ejor es el buen nombre que el buen ungüento, Y el día de la muerte que el día del nacimiento.

Better a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

2 M ejor es ir a una casa de luto Que ir a una casa de banquete, Porque aquello (la muerte) es el fin de todo hombre, Y al que vive lo hará reflexionar en su corazón.

Better to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

3 M ejor es la tristeza que la risa, Porque cuando el rostro está triste el corazón puede estar contento.

Better sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

4 E l corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, Mientras que el corazón de los necios está en la casa del placer.

The heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

5 M ejor es oír la reprensión del sabio Que oír la canción de los necios.

Better to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

6 P orque como crepitar de espinos bajo la olla, Así es la risa del necio. Y también esto es vanidad.

For as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

7 C iertamente la opresión enloquece al sabio, Y el soborno corrompe el corazón.

Surely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

8 M ejor es el fin de un asunto que su comienzo; Mejor es la paciencia de espíritu que la arrogancia de espíritu.

Better the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

9 N o te apresures en tu espíritu a enojarte, Porque el enojo se anida en el seno de los necios.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

10 N o digas: “¿Por qué fueron los días pasados mejores que éstos?” Pues no es sabio que preguntes sobre esto.

Say not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

11 B uena es la sabiduría con herencia, Y provechosa para los que ven el sol.

Wisdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

12 P orque la sabiduría protege como el dinero protege; Pero la ventaja del conocimiento es que la sabiduría preserva la vida de sus poseedores.

For wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

13 C onsidera la obra de Dios: Porque ¿quién puede enderezar lo que El ha torcido ?

See the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

14 A légrate en el día de la prosperidad, Y en el día de la adversidad considera: Dios ha hecho tanto el uno como el otro Para que el hombre no descubra nada que suceda después de él.

In a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

15 H e visto todo durante mi vida de vanidad: Hay justo que perece en su justicia, Y hay impío que alarga su vida en su perversidad.

The whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

16 N o seas demasiado justo, Ni seas sabio en exceso. ¿Por qué has de destruirte?

Be not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

17 N o seas demasiado impío, Ni seas necio. ¿Por qué has de morir antes de tu tiempo ?

Do not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

18 B ueno es que retengas esto Sin soltar aquello de tu mano; Porque el que teme a Dios se sale con todo ello.

good that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

19 L a sabiduría hace más fuerte al sabio Que diez gobernantes que haya en una ciudad.

The wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

20 C iertamente no hay hombre justo en la tierra Que haga el bien y nunca peque.

Because there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

21 T ampoco tomes en serio todas las palabras que se hablan, No sea que oigas a tu siervo maldecirte.

Also to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

22 P orque tú también te das cuenta Que muchas veces has maldecido a otros de la misma manera.

For many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

23 T odo esto probé con sabiduría, y dije: “Seré sabio”; pero eso estaba lejos de mí.

All this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

24 E stá lejos lo que ha sido, Y en extremo profundo. ¿Quién lo descubrirá ?

Far off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

25 D irigí mi corazón a conocer, A investigar y a buscar la sabiduría y la razón, Y a reconocer la maldad de la insensatez Y la necedad de la locura.

I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

26 Y hallé más amarga que la muerte A la mujer cuyo corazón es lazos y redes, Cuyas manos son cadenas. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella, Pero el pecador será por ella apresado.

And I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

27 “ Mira,” dice el Predicador, “he descubierto esto, Agregando una cosa a otra para hallar la razón,

See, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

28 Q ue mi alma está todavía buscando pero no ha hallado: He hallado a un hombre entre mil, Pero no he hallado mujer entre todas éstas.

(that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

29 M ira, sólo esto he hallado: Que Dios hizo rectos a los hombres, Pero ellos se buscaron muchas artimañas.”

See, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.
