1 Д оброе имя лучше дорогой масти, и день смерти--дня рождения.

Better a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

2 Л учше ходить в дом плача об умершем, нежели ходить в дом пира; ибо таков конец всякого человека, и живой приложит к своему сердцу.

Better to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

3 С етование лучше смеха; потому что при печали лица сердце делается лучше.

Better sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

4 С ердце мудрых--в доме плача, а сердце глупых--в доме веселья.

The heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

5 Л учше слушать обличения от мудрого, нежели слушать песни глупых;

Better to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

6 п отому что смех глупых то же, что треск тернового хвороста под котлом. И это--суета!

For as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

7 П ритесняя других, мудрый делается глупым, и подарки портят сердце.

Surely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

8 К онец дела лучше начала его; терпеливый лучше высокомерного.

Better the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

9 Н е будь духом твоим поспешен на гнев, потому что гнев гнездится в сердце глупых.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

10 Н е говори: 'отчего это прежние дни были лучше нынешних?', потому что не от мудрости ты спрашиваешь об этом.

Say not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

11 Х ороша мудрость с наследством, и особенно для видящих солнце:

Wisdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

12 п отому что под сенью ее под сенью серебра; но превосходство знания в мудрость дает жизнь владеющему ею.

For wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

13 С мотри на действование Божие: ибо кто может выпрямить то, что Он сделал кривым?

See the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

14 В о дни благополучия пользуйся благом, а во дни несчастья размышляй: то и другое соделал Бог для того, чтобы человек ничего не мог сказать против Него.

In a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

15 В сего насмотрелся я в суетные дни мои: праведник гибнет в праведности своей; нечестивый живет долго в нечестии своем.

The whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

16 Н е будь слишком строг, и не выставляй себя слишком мудрым; зачем тебе губить себя?

Be not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

17 Н е предавайся греху, и не будь безумен: зачем тебе умирать не в свое время?

Do not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

18 Х орошо, если ты будешь держаться одного и не отнимать руки от другого; потому что кто боится Бога, тот избежит всего того.

good that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

19 М удрость делает мудрого сильнее десяти властителей, которые в городе.

The wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

20 Н ет человека праведного на земле, который делал бы добро и не грешил бы;

Because there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

21 п оэтому не на всякое слово, которое говорят, обращай внимание, чтобы не услышать тебе раба твоего, когда он злословит тебя;

Also to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

22 и бо сердце твое знает много случаев, когда и сам ты злословил других.

For many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

23 В се это испытал я мудростью; я сказал: 'буду я мудрым'; но мудрость далека от меня.

All this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

24 Д алеко то, что было, и глубоко--глубоко: кто постигнет его?

Far off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

25 О братился я сердцем моим к тому, чтобы узнать, исследовать и изыскать мудрость и разум, и познать нечестие глупости, невежества и безумия, --

I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

26 и нашел я, что горче смерти женщина, потому что она--сеть, и сердце ее--силки, руки ее--оковы; добрый пред Богом спасется от нее, а грешник уловлен будет ею.

And I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

27 В от это нашел я, сказал Екклесиаст, испытывая одно за другим.

See, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

28 Ч его еще искала душа моя, и я не нашел? --Мужчину одного из тысячи я нашел, а женщину между всеми ими не нашел.

(that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

29 Т олько это я нашел, что Бог сотворил человека правым, а люди пустились во многие помыслы.

See, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.
