1 И помни Создателя твоего в дни юности твоей, доколе не пришли тяжелые дни и не наступили годы, о которых ты будешь говорить: 'нет мне удовольствия в них!'

Remember also thy Creators in days of thy youth, While that the evil days come not, Nor the years have arrived, that thou sayest, `I have no pleasure in them.'

2 д околе не померкли солнце и свет и луна и звезды, и не нашли новые тучи вслед за дождем.

While that the sun is not darkened, and the light, And the moon, and the stars, And the thick clouds returned after the rain.

3 В тот день, когда задрожат стерегущие дом и согнутся мужи силы; и перестанут молоть мелющие, потому что их немного осталось; и помрачатся смотрящие в окно;

In the day that keepers of the house tremble, And men of strength have bowed themselves, And grinders have ceased, because they have become few. And those looking out at the windows have become dim,

4 и запираться будут двери на улицу; когда замолкнет звук жернова, и будет вставать по крику петуха и замолкнут дщери пения;

And doors have been shut in the street. When the noise of the grinding is low, And riseth at the voice of the bird, And all daughters of song are bowed down.

5 и высоты будут им страшны, и на дороге ужасы; и зацветет миндаль, и отяжелеет кузнечик, и рассыплется каперс. Ибо отходит человек в вечный дом свой, и готовы окружить его по улице плакальщицы; --

Also of that which is high they are afraid, And of the low places in the way, And the almond-tree is despised, And the grasshopper is become a burden, And want is increased, For man is going unto his home age-during, And the mourners have gone round through the street.

6 д околе не порвалась серебряная цепочка, и не разорвалась золотая повязка, и не разбился кувшин у источника, и не обрушилось колесо над колодезем.

While that the silver cord is not removed, And the golden bowl broken, And the pitcher broken by the fountain, And the wheel broken at the well.

7 И возвратится прах в землю, чем он и был; а дух возвратился к Богу, Который дал его.

And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.

8 С уета сует, сказал Екклесиаст, всё--суета!

Vanity of vanities, said the preacher, the whole vanity.

9 К роме того, что Екклесиаст был мудр, он учил еще народ знанию. Он испытывал, исследовал, составил много притчей.

And further, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge, and gave ear, and sought out -- he made right many similes.

10 С тарался Екклесиаст приискивать изящные изречения, и слова истины написаны верно.

The preacher sought to find out pleasing words, and, written the upright, words of truth.

11 С лова мудрых--как иглы и как вбитые гвозди, и составители их--от единого пастыря.

Words of the wise as goads, and as fences planted the masters of collections, they have been given by one shepherd.

12 А что сверх всего этого, сын мой, того берегись: составлять много книг--конца не будет, и много читать--утомительно для тела.

And further, from these, my son, be warned; the making of many books hath no end, and much study a weariness of the flesh.

13 В ыслушаем сущность всего: бойся Бога и заповеди Его соблюдай, потому что в этом всё для человека;

The end of the whole matter let us hear: -- `Fear God, and keep His commands, for this the whole of man.

14 и бо всякое дело Бог приведет на суд, и все тайное, хорошо ли оно, или худо.

For every work doth God bring into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether good or bad.'
