1 D espués de esto murió Nahas, rey de los Amonitas, y su hijo reinó en su lugar.

And it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

2 Y David dijo: “Seré bondadoso con Hanún, hijo de Nahas, porque su padre fue bondadoso conmigo.” Envió, pues, David mensajeros para consolarlo por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los siervos de David llegaron a la tierra de los Amonitas a ver a Hanún para consolarlo,

and David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

3 l os príncipes de los Amonitas dijeron a Hanún: “¿Cree usted que David está honrando a su padre porque le ha enviado consoladores? ¿No han venido a usted sus siervos para reconocer, para destruir y para espiar la tierra?”

and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

4 E ntonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David y los rapó, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad hasta las caderas, y los despidió.

And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

5 Y algunos fueron y le avisaron a David acerca de los hombres. Y él envió gente a su encuentro, porque los hombres estaban muy humillados. Y el rey dijo: “Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y después vuelvan.”

And go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

6 A l ver los Amonitas que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanún y los Amonitas enviaron 34 toneladas de plata para tomar a sueldo carros y hombres de a caballo de Mesopotamia, de Aram Maaca y de Soba.

And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

7 T omaron a sueldo 32, 000 carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su pueblo, los cuales vinieron y acamparon delante de Medeba. También los Amonitas se reunieron desde sus ciudades y vinieron a la batalla.

and they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

8 C uando David se enteró, envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de los valientes.

And David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

9 Y los Amonitas salieron y se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la ciudad, y los reyes que habían venido estaban aparte en el campo.

and the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

10 V iendo Joab que se le presentaba batalla por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió de entre los mejores hombres de Israel y los puso en orden de batalla contra los Arameos.

And Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

11 A l resto del pueblo lo colocó al mando de su hermano Abisai; y se pusieron en orden de batalla contra los Amonitas.

and the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

12 Y dijo: “Si los Arameos son demasiado fuertes para mí, entonces tú me ayudarás, y si los Amonitas son demasiado fuertes para ti, entonces yo te ayudaré.

And he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

13 E sfuérzate, y mostrémonos valientes por amor a nuestro pueblo y por amor a las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y que el Señor haga lo que Le parezca bien.”

be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

14 E ntonces se acercó Joab con el pueblo que estaba con él para enfrentarse en combate con los Arameos, y éstos huyeron delante de él.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

15 C uando los Amonitas vieron que los Arameos huían, ellos también huyeron delante de su hermano Abisai y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.

and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

16 A l ver los Arameos que habían sido derrotados por Israel, enviaron mensajeros, y trajeron a los Arameos que estaban al otro lado del Río (Eufrates), con Sofac, comandante del ejército de Hadad Ezer, al frente de ellos.

And Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

17 C uando se dio aviso a David, éste reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y llegó frente a ellos y se puso en orden de batalla contra ellos. Y cuando David se puso en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a los Arameos, éstos pelearon contra él.

And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

18 P ero los Arameos huyeron delante de Israel, y David mató de los Arameos a 7, 000 hombres de los carros y 40, 000 hombres de a pie, también dio muerte a Sofac, comandante del ejército.

and Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

19 C uando los siervos de Hadad Ezer vieron que habían sido derrotados por Israel, hicieron la paz con David y le sirvieron. Y los Arameos no quisieron ayudar más a los Amonitas.

And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.
