1 D espués de esto, murió Najás, el rey de los amonitas, y en su lugar reinó su hijo.

And it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

2 E ntonces dijo David: «Voy a tratar con misericordia a Janún hijo de Najás, porque también su padre me trató con misericordia.» Entonces envió unos mensajeros para expresarle sus condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los mensajeros de David llegaron a la tierra de los amonitas para consolar a Janún,

and David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

3 l os jefes amonitas le dijeron a Janún: «¿Y crees que David rinde honores a tu padre, al enviarte estos consoladores? ¿Acaso sus siervos no vienen más bien a espiarte, y a investigar y reconocer la tierra?»

and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

4 J anún tomó entonces a los mensajeros de David y los rapó, les rasgó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los mandó de vuelta.

And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

5 L os mensajeros se fueron, y cuando David se enteró de lo que les había sucedido, mando gente a que los recibieran, porque estaban muy ofendidos. Pero el rey mandó que les dijeran: «Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba. Entonces volverán.»

And go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

6 C uando los amonitas vieron que se habían hecho odiosos ante David, Janún y los amonitas enviaron treinta y tres mil kilos de plata a Mesopotamia, Siria, Macá y Soba, para contratar allá carros de guerra y gente de caballería.

And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

7 Y contrataron treinta y dos mil carros de guerra, y al rey de Macá y a su ejército, los cuales vinieron y acamparon frente a Medeba. También los amonitas se juntaron en sus ciudades y salieron a la guerra.

and they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

8 P ero David lo supo y envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de sus hombres más valientes.

And David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

9 L os amonitas salieron a la entrada de la ciudad y se presentaron en orden de batalla, mientras que los reyes que habían venido se quedaron en el campo.

and the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

10 Y al ver Joab que el ataque contra él se había dispuesto por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió a los mejores soldados israelitas, y con ellos se preparó para enfrentar a los sirios.

And Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

11 E l resto del ejército lo puso en manos de su hermano Abisay, y los dispuso para enfrentar a los amonitas.

and the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

12 L e dijo: «Si los sirios resultan ser más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; pero si los amonitas resultan ser más fuertes que tú, yo iré a ayudarte.

And he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

13 ¡ Ánimo! ¡Luchemos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios, y que sea lo que el Señor quiera!»

be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

14 A l avanzar Joab y su ejército para pelear contra los sirios, éstos huyeron de él.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

15 Y al ver los amonitas que los sirios huían, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisay, el hermano de Joab, y se metieron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.

and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

16 C uando los sirios vieron que habían sido vencidos por los israelitas, enviaron mensajeros para que vinieran en su ayuda los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, y que eran capitaneados por Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad Ezer.

And Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

17 P ero tan pronto como David recibió la noticia, reunió a todos los israelitas, cruzó el Jordán, y se dispuso a presentar batalla contra ellos. En cuanto David ordenó su tropa contra los sirios, éstos lo atacaron,

And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

18 p ero huyeron delante de los israelitas. Y David mató a siete mil sirios de los carros de guerra, a cuarenta mil hombres de infantería, y además mató a Sofac, que era el general del ejército.

and Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

19 Y al ver los siervos de Hadad Ezer que habían sido derrotados por los israelitas, hicieron la paz con David y fueron sus siervos. Y nunca más los sirios quisieron ayudar a los amonitas.

And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.
