1 E n los últimos momentos de su vida, el rey David le recomendó a Salomón, su hijo:

And draw near do the days of David to die, and he chargeth Solomon his son, saying,

2 « Estoy por recorrer la senda de todos los mortales. ¡Ánimo, y pórtate como todo un hombre!

`I am going in the way of all the earth, and thou hast been strong, and become a man,

3 C umple los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios, y no te apartes de sus caminos; sigue sus sendas y cumple con sus leyes y preceptos, tal y como están escritos en la ley de Moisés. Así prosperarás en todo lo que hagas y en todo lo que emprendas.

and kept the charge of Jehovah thy God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commands, and His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, so that thou dost wisely all that thou dost, and whithersoever thou turnest,

4 S i lo haces, el Señor confirmará la promesa que me hizo cuando dijo: “Si tus hijos caminan por mis sendas y se comportan ante mí con veracidad, y con todo su corazón y toda su alma, jamás te faltará un sucesor en el trono de Israel.”

so that Jehovah doth establish His word which He spake unto me, saying, If thy sons observe their way to walk before Me in truth, with all their heart, and with all their soul; saying, There is not cut off a man of thine from the throne of Israel.

5 » Tú bien sabes lo que me hizo Joab hijo de Seruyá, y lo que hizo con Abner hijo de Ner, y con Amasa hijo de Jéter. Los mató, y con ello desató una guerra sangrienta en tiempos de paz, con lo que se manchó de sangre de la cabeza a los pies.

`And also, thou hast known that which he did to me -- Joab son of Zeruiah -- that which he did to two heads of the hosts of Israel, to Abner son of Ner, and to Amasa son of Jether -- that he slayeth them, and maketh the blood of war in peace, and putteth the blood of war in his girdle, that on his loins, and in his sandals that on his feet;

6 T oma esto en cuenta, y haz lo que creas conveniente, pero no le permitas llegar a viejo y morir en paz.

and thou hast done according to thy wisdom, and dost not let his old age go down in peace to Sheol.

7 T rata con bondad a los descendientes de Barzilay el galaadita. Quiero que los sientes a tu mesa, porque ellos me ayudaron cuando yo estaba huyendo de tu hermano Absalón.

`And to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite thou dost do kindness, and they have been among those eating at thy table, for so they drew near unto me in my fleeing from the face of Absalom thy brother.

8 E n cuanto a Simey hijo de Gera, el benjaminita de Bajurín, aunque me lanzó una terrible maldición cuando yo iba rumbo a Majanayin, también fue al Jordán a recibirme. Ahí le prometí, delante del Señor, que mi espada no lo mataría.

`And lo, with thee Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim, and he reviled me -- a grievous reviling -- in the day of my going to Mahanaim; and he hath come down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swear to him by Jehovah, saying, I do not put thee to death by the sword;

9 P ero ahora él está en tus manos, y tú sabrás lo que debes hacer. Aunque ya está viejo, haz que baje al sepulcro bañado en su propia sangre.» Muerte de David

and now, acquit him not, for a wise man thou, and thou hast known that which thou dost to him, and hast brought down his old age with blood to Sheol.'

10 Y David cayó en el sueño eterno, como sus padres, y fue sepultado en su ciudad.

And David lieth down with his fathers, and is buried in the city of David,

11 C uarenta años reinó en Israel, de los cuales, siete años reinó en Hebrón y treinta y tres en Jerusalén.

and the days that David hath reigned over Israel forty years, in Hebron he hath reigned seven years, and in Jerusalem he hath reigned thirty and three years.

12 S alomón ocupó entonces el trono de David, su padre, y su reino se consolidó. Salomón afirma su reino

And Solomon hath sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom is established greatly,

13 U n día, Adonías hijo de Jaguit fue a visitar a Betsabé, la madre de Salomón, y ella le preguntó: «¿Vienes en son de paz?» Y Adonías respondió que sí,

and Adonijah son of Haggith cometh in unto Bath-Sheba, mother of Solomon, and she saith, `Is thy coming peace?' and he saith, `Peace.'

14 y añadió: «Quiero hacerte una petición.» Betsabé le pidió que hablara,

And he saith, `I have a word unto thee,' and she saith, `Speak.'

15 y él dijo: «Como bien sabes, el reino era mío; todo Israel había puesto en mí sus esperanzas de que yo reinara, pero el reino cambió de manos y ahora es de Salomón, mi hermano, porque esa fue la voluntad del Señor.

And he saith, `Thou hast known that the kingdom was mine, and towards me set their faces had all Israel for reigning, and the kingdom is turned round about, and is my brother's, for from Jehovah it was his;

16 P ero te ruego que no me niegues lo que te voy a pedir.» Betsabé le dijo: «Dime qué es lo que quieres.»

and now, one petition I am asking of thee -- turn not back my face;' and she saith unto him, `Speak.'

17 Y Adonías le dijo: «Por favor, habla con el rey Salomón y pídele que me dé por esposa a Abisag la sunamita. Yo sé que a ti no te negará lo que le pidas.»

And he saith, `Speak, I pray thee, to Solomon the king, for he doth not turn back thy face, and he doth give to me Abishag the Shunammite for a wife.'

18 B etsabé le dijo: «Está bien. Yo hablaré por ti al rey.»

And Bath-Sheba saith, `Good; I do speak for thee unto the king.'

19 Y Betsabé fue a palacio para hablar con el rey Salomón en favor de Adonías. El rey se levantó a recibirla y se inclinó ante ella; luego se sentó en su trono y mandó traer una silla para su madre, y ella se sentó a su derecha.

And Bath-Sheba cometh in unto king Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, and the king riseth to meet her, and boweth himself to her, and sitteth on his throne, and placeth a throne for the mother of the king, and she sitteth at his right hand.

20 E ntonces Betsabé le dijo: «Quiero hacerte una pequeña petición. Espero que no me la niegues.» Y el rey le dijo: «Pídeme lo que quieras, madre mía, que no te lo negaré.»

And she saith, `One small petition I ask of thee, turn not back my face;' and the king saith to her, `Ask, my mother, for I do not turn back thy face.'

21 Y ella respondió: «Deja que Adonías, tu hermano, tome por mujer a Abisag la sunamita.»

And she saith, `Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother for a wife.'

22 P ero el rey Salomón respondió a su madre: «¿Por qué pides a Abisag la sunamita para Adonías? ¿También me vas a pedir que le entregue el reino, porque es mi hermano mayor? ¡Él cuenta ya con el apoyo del sacerdote Abiatar y de Joab hijo de Seruyá!»

And king Solomon answereth and saith to his mother, `And why art thou asking Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? also ask for him the kingdom -- for he mine elder brother -- even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab son of Zeruiah.'

23 E ntonces el rey Salomón juró por el Señor, y dijo: «Que el Señor me castigue duramente, y más aún, que con esta petición Adonías ha firmado su sentencia de muerte.

And king Solomon sweareth by Jehovah, saying, `Thus doth God to me, and thus He doth add -- surely against his soul hath Adonijah spoken this word;

24 J uro por el Señor, que me ha puesto y confirmado en el trono de David, mi padre, y que ha establecido mi dinastía, como lo había prometido, que hoy mismo Adonías morirá.»

and now, Jehovah liveth, who hath established me, and causeth me to sit on the throne of David my father, and who hath made for me an house as He spake -- surely to-day is Adonijah put to death.'

25 E ntonces el rey Salomón ordenó a Benaías hijo de Joyadá que matara a Adonías, y Benaías fue y lo mató.

And king Solomon sendeth by the hand of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he falleth upon him, and he dieth.

26 L uego, el rey le ordenó al sacerdote Abiatar: «Regresa a Anatot, tu tierra. Mereces la muerte, pero no te mataré hoy porque has llevado el arca del Señor, nuestro Dios, en presencia de David, mi padre, y porque sufriste junto con él las mismas aflicciones.»

And to Abiathar the priest said the king, `To Anathoth go, unto thy fields; for a man of death thou, but in this day I do not put thee to death, because thou hast borne the ark of the Lord Jehovah before David my father, and because thou wast afflicted in all that my father was afflicted in.'

27 A sí fue como Salomón quitó a Abiatar del sacerdocio en el templo del Señor, con lo que se cumplió su palabra contra los descendientes de Elí, como lo había afirmado en Silo.

And Solomon casteth out Abiathar from being priest to Jehovah, to fulfil the word of Jehovah which He spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

28 E sta noticia llegó a oídos de Joab, que también había apoyado a Adonías, aunque no se había unido a Absalón. En cuanto lo supo, huyó al tabernáculo del Señor y se aferró a los cuernos del altar.

And the report hath come unto Joab -- for Joab hath turned aside after Adonijah, though after Absalom he did not turn aside -- and Joab fleeth unto the tent of Jehovah, and layeth hold on the horns of the altar.

29 C uando Salomón supo que Joab estaba en el tabernáculo del Señor, junto al altar, ordenó a Benaías hijo de Joyadá que fuera y le diera muerte.

And it is declared to king Solomon that Joab hath fled unto the tent of Jehovah, and lo, near the altar; and Solomon sendeth Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, `Go, fall upon him.'

30 E ntonces Benaías fue al tabernáculo del Señor y le dijo a Joab: «El rey te ordena que salgas.» Pero Joab respondió: «De ninguna manera. Prefiero morir aquí.» Benaías regresó a palacio y le contó al rey lo que había dicho Joab.

And Benaiah cometh in unto the tent of Jehovah, and saith unto him, `Thus said the king, Come out;' and he saith, `Nay, but here I die.' And Benaiah bringeth back the king word, saying, `Thus spake Joab, yea, thus he answered me.'

31 E ntonces el rey dijo: «Pues cumple sus deseos. Mátalo y entiérralo, y borra así la sangre que Joab derramó injustamente, y que nos manchó a mi padre y a mí.

And the king saith to him, `Do as he hath spoken, and fall upon him, and thou hast buried him, and turned aside the causeless blood which Joab shed, from off me, and from off the house of my father;

32 E l Señor le hará pagar con su propia sangre, porque asesinó a dos hombres más justos y honrados que él. Los mató a filo de espada, y sin que mi padre David lo supiera. Mató a Abner hijo de Ner, que era general del ejército de Israel, y a Amasa hijo de Jéter, que era general del ejército de Judá.

and Jehovah hath turned back his blood on his own head, who hath fallen on two men more righteous and better than he, and slayeth them with the sword, -- and my father David knew not -- Abner son of Ner, head of the host of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, head of the host of Judah;

33 L a sangre de estos dos hombres recaerá sobre Joab y sobre todos sus descendientes; en cambio, sobre David y sus descendientes, y sobre su dinastía y su trono, el Señor derramará paz para siempre.»

yea, turned back hath their blood on the head of Joab, and on the head of his seed to the age; and for David, and for his seed, and for his house, and for his throne, there is peace unto the age, from Jehovah.'

34 E ntonces Benaías hijo de Joyadá fue y atacó a Joab, y lo mató; y luego lo sepultaron en su casa en el desierto.

And Benaiah son of Jehoiada goeth up and falleth upon him, and putteth him to death, and he is buried in his own house in the wilderness,

35 S u lugar como capitán del ejército lo asumió Benaías por orden del rey, y Sadoc ocupó el lugar de Abiatar como sacerdote.

and the king putteth Benaiah son of Jehoiada in his stead over the host, and Zadok the priest hath the king put in the stead of Abiathar.

36 D espués, el rey mandó llamar a Simey, y le dijo: «Construye una casa en Jerusalén, para que vivas allí; pero no se te ocurra salir.

And the king sendeth and calleth for Shimei, and saith to him, `Build for thee a house in Jerusalem, and thou hast dwelt there, and dost not go out thence any where;

37 Q uiero que sepas que, si me entero que sales y cruzas el torrente de Cedrón, ese día morirás, y tú serás el único responsable de tu muerte.»

and it hath been, in the day of thy going out, and thou hast passed over the brook Kidron, thou dost certainly know that thou dost surely die -- thy blood is on thy head.'

38 Y Simey le respondió: «Estoy de acuerdo con lo dicho por Su Majestad. Así lo haré.» Y Simey vivió en Jerusalén mucho tiempo.

And Shimei saith to the king, `The word good; as my lord the king hath spoken so doth thy servant do;' and Shimei dwelleth in Jerusalem many days.

39 P ero sucedió que, después de tres años, dos de sus criados huyeron a Gat, donde reinaba Aquis hijo de Macá. Cuando Simey supo que sus criados estaban en Gat,

And it cometh to pass, at the end of three years, that flee do two of the servants of Shimei unto Achish son of Maachah, king of Gath, and they declare to Shimei, saying, `Lo, thy servants in Gath;'

40 a parejó su asno y fue a Gat en busca de sus criados; y cuando los halló, regresó a Jerusalén.

and Shimei riseth, and saddleth his ass, and goeth to Gath, unto Achish, to seek his servants, and Shimei goeth and bringeth his servants from Gath.

41 P ero Salomón se enteró de que Simey había salido de Jerusalén para ir a Gat, pero que había vuelto.

And it is declared to Solomon that Shimei hath gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and doth return,

42 E ntonces mandó llamar a Simey, y le dijo: «Yo te advertí, y tú juraste por el Señor, que el día que salieras de tu casa, morirías. Y tú dijiste: “Estoy de acuerdo con lo dicho por Su Majestad.”

and the king sendeth and calleth for Shimei, and saith unto him, `Have I not caused thee to swear by Jehovah -- and I testify against thee, saying, In the day of thy going out, and thou hast gone anywhere, thou dost certainly know that thou dost surely die; and thou sayest unto me, The word I have heard good?

43 E ntonces, ¿por qué faltaste a tu juramento ante el Señor, y desobedeciste la orden que yo te impuse?»

and wherefore hast thou not kept the oath of Jehovah, and the charge that I charged upon thee?'

44 Y Salomón añadió: «En el fondo de tu corazón tú bien sabes que le hiciste mucho daño a mi padre David. Ahora el Señor ha hecho que ese daño recaiga sobre ti mismo.

And the king saith unto Shimei, `Thou hast known all the evil that thy heart hath known, which thou didest to David my father, and Jehovah hath turned back thine evil on thy head,

45 Y o, el rey Salomón, seré bendecido, y el trono de David se afirmará para siempre delante del Señor.»

and king Solomon blessed, and the throne of David is established before Jehovah unto the age.'

46 E ntonces el rey ordenó a Benaías hijo de Joyadá dar muerte a Simey, y Benaías lo hirió y lo mató. Con esto, el reino de Salomón quedó confirmado.

And the king chargeth Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he goeth out and falleth on him, and he dieth, and the kingdom is established in the hand of Solomon.
