1 « Aquel día se volvió a leer la ley de Moisés, y cuando el pueblo la escuchó, se dio cuenta de que los amonitas y los moabitas no podían ser parte del pueblo de Dios,

On that day there was read in the book of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it hath been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite doth not come into the assembly of God -- unto the age,

2 p orque esos pueblos no habían recibido bien a los israelitas, sino que le pagaron a Balaam para que los maldijera; sin embargo, nuestro Dios cambió la maldición en bendición.

because they have not come before the sons of Israel with bread and with water, and hire against them Balaam to revile them, and our God turneth the reviling into a blessing.

3 Y cuando el pueblo oyó este trozo de la ley, sacaron de entre ellos a todos los que se habían mezclado con extranjeros.

And it cometh to pass, at their hearing the law, that they separate all the mixed people from Israel.

4 » Antes de esto, cuando el sacerdote Eliasib estaba a cargo de los almacenes del templo de nuestro Dios, había emparentado con Tobías,

And before this Eliashib the priest, appointed over chambers of the house of our God, a relation of Tobiah,

5 y le había construido una hermosa habitación donde antes se guardaban las ofrendas, el incienso, los utensilios, el diezmo de los cereales, del vino y del aceite, que conforme al mandamiento pertenecían a los levitas, los cantores y los porteros, y eran la ofrenda para los sacerdotes que servían en el templo.

and he maketh for him a great chamber, and there they were formerly putting the present, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the corn, the new wine, and the oil -- the commanded thing of the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers -- and the heave-offering of the priests.

6 » Cuando eso pasó, yo todavía no estaba en Jerusalén, sino en Babilonia. Yo me presenté ante el rey Artajerjes en el año treinta y dos de su reinado, y fue entonces cuando le pedí permiso

And during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon did I come unto the king, and at the end of days I have asked of the king,

7 p ara venir a Jerusalén. Fue entonces también cuando me enteré del mal que por su aprecio a Tobías había cometido Eliasib, al mandar construir para él un lugar para que viviera, precisamente en los atrios del templo de Dios.

and I come in to Jerusalem, and understand concerning the evil that Eliashib hath done for Tobiah, to make to him a chamber in the courts of the house of God,

8 » Esto me dolió tanto, que saqué al patio todos los muebles de la casa de Tobías,

and it is very displeasing to me, and I cast all the vessels of the house of Tobiah without, out of the chamber,

9 y ordené que limpiaran muy bien el lugar, y que luego volvieran a poner allí los utensilios del templo de Dios, y las ofrendas y el incienso.

and I speak, and they cleanse the chambers, and I bring back thither the vessels of the house of God with the present and the frankincense.

10 » También me di cuenta de que no se habían entregado a los levitas sus raciones, y que por eso ellos y los cantores que servían en el templo habían regresado a sus respectivas tierras.

And I know that the portions of the Levites have not been given, and they flee each to his field -- the Levites and the singers, doing the work.

11 E ntonces reprendí a los oficiales del templo, y les pregunté: “¿Por qué está abandonado el templo de Dios?” Y reinstalé en sus puestos a los levitas y a los cantores.

And I strive with the prefects, and say, `Wherefore hath the house of God been forsaken?' and I gather them, and set them on their station;

12 » Entonces el pueblo llevó a los almacenes del templo los diezmos de cereales, de vino y de aceite.

and all Judah have brought in the tithe of the corn, and of the new wine, and of the oil, to the treasuries.

13 C omo administradores de estos bienes elegí al sacerdote Selemías y al escriba Sadoc. De los levitas, elegí a Pedaías; para que los ayudaran, nombré a Janán, que era hijo de Zacur y nieto de Matanías, pues tenían fama de ser hombres honrados para distribuir los bienes entre sus hermanos.

And I appoint treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and by their hand Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for stedfast they have been reckoned, and on them to give a portion to their brethren.

14 » Dios mío, ¡toma esto en cuenta y no te olvides de mí! ¡No te olvides del bien que he hecho en favor de tu templo y de su servicio!

Be mindful of me, O my God, for this, and do not blot out my kind acts that I have done, for the house of my God, and for its charges.

15 » En esos días descubrí en Judá que, en el día de reposo, había algunos que exprimían uvas en los lagares, acarreaban leña, y cargaban sus asnos con vino, uvas, higos y todo tipo de mercancía, para llevarlas a Jerusalén. Entonces les llamé la atención, porque en el día de reposo no está permitida la venta de provisiones.

In those days I have seen in Judah those treading wine-vats on sabbath, and bringing in the sheaves, and lading on the asses, and also, wine, grapes, and figs, and every burden, yea, they are bringing in to Jerusalem on the sabbath-day, and I testify in the day of their selling provision.

16 » En Jerusalén descubrí también a un grupo de tirios que en el día de reposo vendían pescado y otras mercancías a los de Judá.

And the Tyrians have dwelt in it, bringing in fish, and every ware, and selling on sabbath to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem.

17 E ntonces llamé a los jefes de Judá, y les dije: “¿Por qué permiten esta maldad de profanar el día de reposo?

And I strive with the freemen of Judah, and say to them, `What this evil thing that ye are doing, and polluting the sabbath-day?

18 E sto mismo hicieron sus antepasados, y por eso nuestro Dios trajo esta calamidad sobre nosotros y sobre nuestra ciudad. ¿Y todavía ustedes añaden ira sobre Israel al profanar el día de reposo?”

Thus did not your fathers do? and our God bringeth in on us all this evil, and on this city, and ye are adding fierceness on Israel, to pollute the sabbath.'

19 » Antes del día de reposo, cuando ya empezaba a oscurecer y las puertas de Jerusalén todavía estaban abiertas, ordené cerrarlas y no volver a abrirlas hasta que el día de reposo hubiera pasado. Y para impedir la entrada de cualquier tipo de carga, puse como guardias a algunos de mis siervos.

And it cometh to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem have been dark before the sabbath, that I speak, and the doors are shut, and I say, that they do not open them till after the sabbath; and of my servants I have stationed at the gates; there doth not come in a burden on the sabbath-day.

20 F ue así como en repetidas ocasiones los mercaderes se quedaron fuera de Jerusalén.

And they lodge -- the merchants and sellers of all ware -- at the outside of Jerusalem, once or twice,

21 E ntonces los llamé y les advertí: “¿Por qué se quedan fuera de la muralla? Si vuelven a hacerlo, los voy a encarcelar.” Y desde entonces dejaron de venir en día de reposo.

and I testify against them, and say unto them, `Wherefore are ye lodging over-against the wall? if ye repeat, a hand I put forth upon you;' from that time they have not come in on the sabbath.

22 » A los levitas les ordené que se purificaran y fueran a custodiar las puertas, para mantener sagrado el día de reposo. »Dios mío, ¡acuérdate de mí también por esto, y por tu gran misericordia, perdóname!

And I say to the Levites, that they be cleansed, and, coming in, keeping the gates, to sanctify the sabbath-day. Also, this, remember for me, O my God, and have pity on me, according to the abundance of Thy kindness.

23 » En aquel tiempo descubrí también que algunos judíos se habían casado con mujeres de Asdod, de Amón y de Moab;

Also, in those days, I have seen the Jews have settled women of Ashdod, of Ammon, of Moab.

24 y que la mitad de sus hijos hablaban la lengua de Asdod, o de otros pueblos, porque no habían aprendido la lengua de sus padres judíos.

And of their sons, half are speaking Ashdoditish -- and are not knowing to speak Jewish -- and according to the language of people and people.

25 L es llamé la atención, y los maldije; a algunos de ellos les di de golpes y les arranqué los cabellos, y les hice jurar que no darían sus mujeres a los extranjeros, y que tampoco tomarían mujeres extranjeras para ellos mismos.

And I strive with them, and declare them vile, and smite certain of them, and pluck off their hair, and cause them to swear by God, `Ye do not give your daughters to their sons, nor do ye take of their daughters to your sons, and to yourselves.

26 L es dije: “¿Acaso no fue éste el pecado de Salomón, rey de Israel? Aunque Salomón fue amado por Dios, y Dios lo puso como rey de los israelitas, y en muchos países no hubo un rey que se le pudiera comparar, ¡aun Salomón pecó por culpa de las mujeres extranjeras!

`By these did not Solomon king of Israel sin? and among the many nations there was no king like him, and beloved by his God he was, and God maketh him king over all Israel -- even him did the strange women cause to sin.

27 ¿ Creen que vamos a permitir que ustedes sigan cometiendo este gran pecado contra nuestro Dios, de que sigan casándose con mujeres extranjeras?”

And to you do we hearken to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God, to settle strange women?'

28 » Junto a mí estaba un hijo de Joyadá, que era nieto del sacerdote Eliasib y yerno de Sambalat el horonita, pero lo aparté de mí.

And of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest, son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, and I cause him to flee from off me.

29 » Dios mío, ¡acuérdate de los que contaminan el sacerdocio y transgreden el pacto que los sacerdotes y levitas han hecho contigo!

Be mindful of them, O my God, for the redeemed of the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 » Entonces saqué de allí a todos los extranjeros, y formé grupos de verdaderos sacerdotes y levitas, y les asigné su servicio,

And I have cleansed them from every stranger, and appoint charges to priests and to Levites, each in his work,

31 t anto para llevar la ofrenda de la leña en su momento, como para recoger los primeros frutos de todo. »Dios mío, ¡no te olvides de bendecirme!»

and for the wood-offering at appointed times, and for first-fruits. Be mindful of me, O my God, for good.
