1 C uando Jesús terminó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en otras ciudades.

And it came to pass, when Jesus ended directing his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

2 J uan, que estaba en la cárcel, se enteró de los hechos de Cristo y envió a dos de sus discípulos

And John having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, having sent two of his disciples,

3 p ara que le preguntaran: «¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir, o esperaremos a otro?»

said to him, `Art thou He who is coming, or for another do we look?'

4 J esús les respondió: «Vuelvan y cuéntenle a Juan las cosas que han visto y oído.

And Jesus answering said to them, `Having gone, declare to John the things that ye hear and see,

5 L os ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen, los muertos son resucitados, y a los pobres se les anuncian las buenas noticias.

blind receive sight, and lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear, dead are raised, and poor have good news proclaimed,

6 B ienaventurado el que no tropieza por causa de mí.»

and happy is he who may not be stumbled in me.'

7 M ientras ellos se iban, Jesús comenzó a decir a la gente acerca de Juan: «¿Qué fueron ustedes a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento?

And as they are going, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, `What went ye out to the wilderness to view? -- a reed shaken by the wind?

8 ¿ Qué fueron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido con ropa elegante? Los que se visten con ropa elegante se encuentran en los palacios.

`But what went ye out to see? -- a man clothed in soft garments? lo, those wearing the soft things are in the kings' houses.

9 P ero ¿qué es lo que ustedes fueron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Yo les digo que sí, ¡y a alguien mayor que un profeta!

`But what went ye out to see? -- a prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet,

10 P orque éste es de quien está escrito: “Yo envío mi mensajero delante de ti, El cual preparará tu camino.”

for this is he of whom it hath been written, Lo, I do send My messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 » De cierto les digo que, entre los que nacen de mujer, no ha surgido nadie mayor que Juan el Bautista. Aun así, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él.

Verily I say to you, there hath not risen, among those born of women, a greater than John the Baptist, but he who is least in the reign of the heavens is greater than he.

12 D esde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan.

`And, from the days of John the Baptist till now, the reign of the heavens doth suffer violence, and violent men do take it by force,

13 Y todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.

for all the prophets and the law till John did prophesy,

14 S i quieren recibirlo, él es Elías, el que había de venir.

and if ye are willing to receive, he is Elijah who was about to come;

15 E l que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga.

he who is having ears to hear -- let him hear.

16 P ero ¿con qué compararé a esta generación? Se parece a los niños que se sientan en las plazas y les gritan a sus compañeros:

`And to what shall I liken this generation? it is like little children in market-places, sitting and calling to their comrades,

17 “ Tocamos la flauta, y ustedes no bailaron; entonamos cantos fúnebres, y ustedes no lloraron.”

and saying, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance, we lamented to you, and ye did not smite the breast.

18 P orque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen que tiene un demonio;

`For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon;

19 l uego vino el Hijo del Hombre, que come y bebe, y lo califican de glotón y borracho, y de ser amigo de cobradores de impuestos y de pecadores. Pero a la sabiduría la reivindican sus hijos.» Ayes sobre las ciudades impenitentes

the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners, and wisdom was justified of her children.'

20 J esús comenzó entonces a reprender a las ciudades donde había hecho muchos de sus milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido. Les decía:

Then began he to reproach the cities in which were done most of his mighty works, because they did not reform.

21 « ¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Porque si en Tiro y en Sidón se hubieran hecho los milagros que se han hecho en ustedes, hace tiempo que en cilicio y cubiertas de ceniza ellas habrían mostrado su arrepentimiento.

`Wo to thee, Chorazin! wo to thee, Bethsaida! because, if in Tyre and Sidon had been done the mighty works that were done in you, long ago in sackcloth and ashes they had reformed;

22 P or tanto les digo que, en el día del juicio, el castigo para Tiro y para Sidón será más tolerable que para ustedes.

but I say to you, to Tyre and Sidon it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than for you.

23 Y tú, Cafarnaún, que te elevas hasta el cielo, hasta el Hades caerás abatida. Porque si en Sodoma se hubieran hecho los milagros que se han hecho en ti, hasta el día de hoy habría permanecido.

`And thou, Capernaum, which unto the heaven wast exalted, unto hades shalt be brought down, because if in Sodom had been done the mighty works that were done in thee, it had remained unto this day;

24 P or tanto les digo que, en el día del juicio, el castigo para Sodoma será más tolerable que para ti.» Vengan a mí y descansen

but I say to you, to the land of Sodom it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than to thee.'

25 E n ese momento, Jesús dijo: «Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque estas cosas las escondiste de los sabios y de los entendidos, y las revelaste a los niños.

At that time Jesus answering said, `I do confess to Thee, Father, Lord of the heavens and of the earth, that thou didst hide these things from wise and understanding ones, and didst reveal them to babes.

26 S í, Padre, porque así te agradó.

Yes, Father, because so it was good pleasure before Thee.

27 E l Padre me ha entregado todas las cosas, y nadie conoce al Hijo, sino el Padre, ni nadie conoce al Padre, sino el Hijo, y aquel a quien el Hijo lo quiera revelar.

`All things were delivered to me by my Father, and none doth know the Son, except the Father, nor doth any know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may wish to reveal.

28 V engan a mí todos ustedes, los agotados de tanto trabajar, que yo los haré descansar.

`Come unto me, all ye labouring and burdened ones, and I will give you rest,

29 L leven mi yugo sobre ustedes, y aprendan de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón, y hallarán descanso para su alma;

take up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls,

30 p orque mi yugo es fácil, y mi carga es liviana.»

for my yoke easy, and my burden is light.'
