1 E l rey cananeo de Arad habitaba en el Néguev, y cuando oyó que Israel venía por el camino de Atarín, salió a pelear contra ellos, y a algunos los hizo prisioneros.

And the Canaanite -- king Arad -- dwelling in the south, heareth that Israel hath come the way of the Atharim, and he fighteth against Israel, and taketh of them captive.

2 E ntonces Israel hizo un voto al Señor, y dijo: «Si tú pones este pueblo en mis manos, yo destruiré sus ciudades.»

And Israel voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost certainly give this people into my hand, then I have devoted their cities;'

3 E l Señor escuchó la petición de Israel, y le entregó a los cananeos. Israel destruyó entonces a los cananeos y a sus ciudades, y a ese lugar lo llamó Jormá. La serpiente de bronce

and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Israel, and giveth up the Canaanite, and he devoteth them and their cities, and calleth the name of the place Hormah.

4 D espués los israelitas partieron del monte Hor, en dirección al Mar Rojo, para rodear la tierra de Edom, y en el camino el pueblo se desanimó

And they journey from mount Hor, the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom, and the soul of the people is short in the way,

5 y murmuró contra Dios y contra Moisés: «¿Para qué nos hiciste salir de Egipto? ¿Para hacernos morir en este desierto? ¡No hay pan ni agua, y ya estamos hartos de este pan tan liviano!»

and the people speak against God, and against Moses, `Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to die in a wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul hath been weary of this light bread.'

6 E ntonces el Señor mandó serpientes venenosas entre el pueblo, para que los mordieran, y muchos del pueblo de Israel murieron.

And Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;

7 E l pueblo fue a ver a Moisés, y le dijo: «Hemos pecado al murmurar contra el Señor y contra ti. ¡Ruégale al Señor que nos quite estas serpientes!» Y Moisés oró por el pueblo,

and the people come in unto Moses and say, `We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.

8 y el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Haz una serpiente como éstas, y ponla en un asta. Todo el que sea mordido y la mire, vivirá.»

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Make for thee a burning, and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it -- he hath lived.

9 M oisés hizo una serpiente de bronce, y la puso sobre un asta; y cuando alguna serpiente mordía a alguien, si miraba a la serpiente de bronce, seguía con vida. Los israelitas rodean la tierra de Moab

And Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass -- he hath lived.

10 L os hijos de Israel partieron de allí y acamparon en Obot.

And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

11 A l partir de Obot, acamparon en Iyé Abarín, en el desierto que está enfrente de Moab, por donde sale el sol.

And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

12 A l partir de allí, acamparon en el valle de Zered.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.

13 A l partir de allí, acamparon al otro lado del río Arnón, que está en el desierto y que va más allá del territorio del amorreo. Este río Arnón es el límite entre los moabitas y los amorreos.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;

14 P or eso en el libro de las batallas del Señor puede leerse: «... lo que hizo en el Mar Rojo y en los arroyos de Arnón,

therefore it is said in a book, `The wars of Jehovah,' -- `Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;

15 y en la corriente de los arroyos que va a parar en Ar y se detiene en los límites de Moab.»

And the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'

16 D e allí siguieron hasta Ber, es decir, el pozo donde el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Reúne al pueblo, que voy a darles agua.»

And from thence to Beer; it the well which Jehovah said to Moses, `Gather the people, and I give to them -- water.'

17 I srael entonó allí este cántico: «¡Canta, pozo! ¡Deja fluir el agua!

Then singeth Israel this song, concerning the well -- they have answered to it:

18 L os grandes señores cavaron este pozo; ¡con sus cetros lo cavaron los nobles y los príncipes del pueblo!» Del desierto se dirigieron a Matana,

`A well -- digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness to Mattanah,

19 d e Matana a Najaliel, de Najaliel a Bamot,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

20 y de Bamot al valle que está en los campos de Moab, y a la cumbre del Pisga, que mira hacia el desierto. Israel derrota a Sijón

and from Bamoth in the valley which in the field of Moab the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.

21 I srael envió embajadores a Sijón, el rey de los amorreos, para decirle:

And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,

22 « Voy a pasar por tu tierra. No iremos por los sembrados ni por las viñas, ni beberemos agua de tus pozos. Iremos por el camino principal, hasta salir de tu territorio.»

`Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'

23 P ero Sijón no permitió que Israel pasara por su territorio, sino que juntó a todo su ejército y salió al desierto para pelear contra Israel. Al llegar a Yahás,

And Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.

24 I srael hirió a Sijón a filo de espada y se posesionó de su tierra, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y hasta los hijos de Amón, porque la frontera de los hijos de Amón era fuerte.

And Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok -- unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon strong.

25 I srael se apoderó de todas estas ciudades, y habitó en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, y en Jesbón y todas sus aldeas.

And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

26 J esbón era la ciudad de Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que antes había tenido guerra con el rey de Moab, y se había apoderado de toda su tierra, hasta Arnón.

for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

27 P or eso dicen los proverbistas: «¡Vengan todos a Jesbón! ¡Que vuelva a levantarse la ciudad de Sijón!

therefore those using similes say -- `Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

28 P orque de Jesbón salió fuego; de la ciudad de Sijón salieron llamas que consumieron las ciudades de Moab y las señoriales alturas de Arnón.

For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

29 » ¡Ay de ti, Moab! ¡Quedaste destruido, pueblo de Quemos! Tus hijos fueron puestos en fuga, y tus hijas fueron hechas cautivas del rey Sijón de los amorreos.

Wo to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape -- Also his daughters -- Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite -- Sihon!

30 » ¡Pero nosotros devastamos su reino! Jesbón quedó en ruinas hasta Dibón, pues la destruimos hasta Nofa y Medeba.» Israel derrota a Og de Basán

And we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which unto Medeba.'

31 F ue así como Israel llegó a habitar la tierra de los amorreos.

And Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,

32 A demás, Moisés mandó exploradores a Jazer, y se apoderaron de sus aldeas y desalojaron a los amorreos.

and Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who there,

33 C uando volvieron, lo hicieron por el camino de Basán; pero Og, el rey de Basán, salió con todo su ejército a combatirlos, y pelearon en Edrey.

and turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, Edrei.

34 E ntonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «No le tengas miedo, porque a él y a todo su pueblo yo los pondré en tus manos, lo mismo que a su tierra, y harás con él lo mismo que hiciste con Sijón, el rey amorreo que habitaba en Jesbón.»

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon.'

35 Y los israelitas hirieron de muerte a Sijón y a sus hijos, y a todo su ejército. No dejaron con vida a nadie. Así se apoderaron de su tierra.

And they smite him, and his sons, and all his people, until he hath not left to him a remnant, and they possess his land.
