1 Y o, Pablo, que cuando estoy entre ustedes soy ciertamente humilde, pero atrevido cuando estoy lejos de ustedes, les ruego esto por la bondad y dulzura de Cristo:

And I, Paul, myself, do call upon you -- through the meekness and gentleness of the Christ -- who in presence, indeed humble among you, and being absent, have courage toward you,

2 l es ruego que, cuando esté entre ustedes, no tenga yo que actuar con la osadía que estoy resuelto a utilizar contra los que creen que actuamos según los criterios humanos.

and I beseech, that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;

3 E s verdad que aún somos seres humanos, pero no luchamos como los seres humanos.

for walking in the flesh, not according to the flesh do we war,

4 L as armas con las que luchamos no son las de este mundo, sino las poderosas armas de Dios, capaces de destruir fortalezas

for the weapons of our warfare not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,

5 y de desbaratar argumentos y toda altivez que se levanta contra el conocimiento de Dios, y de llevar cautivo todo pensamiento a la obediencia a Cristo.

reasonings bringing down, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,

6 E stamos listos para castigar toda desobediencia, una vez que la obediencia de ustedes llegue a la perfección.

and being in readiness to avenge every disobedience, whenever your obedience may be fulfilled.

7 U stedes se fijan sólo en la apariencia de las cosas. Pero si alguno está convencido de que es de Cristo, piense bien en esto que le digo: que así como él es de Cristo, también nosotros somos de Cristo.

The things in presence do ye see? if any one hath trusted in himself to be Christ's, this let him reckon again from himself, that according as he is Christ's, so also we Christ's;

8 N o me avergüenza el jactarme una vez más de nuestra autoridad, la cual el Señor nos dio para la edificación de ustedes, y no para su destrucción.

for even if also anything more abundantly I shall boast concerning our authority, that the Lord gave us for building up, and not for casting you down, I shall not be ashamed;

9 N o quiero dar la impresión de querer asustarlos por carta.

that I may not seem as if I would terrify you through the letters,

10 H ay quienes dicen que mis cartas son duras y fuertes, pero que mi presencia física es débil y que mis palabras no valen nada.

`because the letters indeed -- saith one -- weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'

11 Q uienes eso dicen deben tener en cuenta que, así como somos con palabras y por carta, cuando estamos lejos, así también lo seremos en los hechos, cuando estemos entre ustedes.

This one -- let him reckon thus: that such as we are in word, through letters, being absent, such also, being present, in deed.

12 N osotros no nos atrevemos a igualarnos ni a compararnos con quienes se alaban a sí mismos; cuando ellos se miden con sus propias medidas y se comparan unos con otros, no demuestran buen juicio.

For we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,

13 N osotros no vamos a jactarnos de manera exagerada, sino que nos ceñiremos a los límites establecidos por Dios, que llegan también hasta ustedes.

and we in regard to the unmeasured things will not boast ourselves, but after the measure of the line that the God of measure did appoint to us -- to reach even unto you;

14 S i antes no hubiéramos llegado hasta ustedes, podría decirse que nos hemos extralimitado; pero fuimos los primeros en llegar hasta ustedes con el evangelio de Cristo.

for not as not reaching to you do we stretch ourselves overmuch, for even unto you did we come in the good news of the Christ,

15 N o nos jactamos desmedidamente en trabajos ajenos, sino que, a medida que crezca la fe de ustedes, esperamos ser engrandecidos entre ustedes, siempre dentro de nuestros límites.

not boasting of the things not measured, in other men's labours, and having hope -- your faith increasing -- in you to be enlarged, according to our line -- into abundance,

16 T ambién anunciaremos el evangelio en lugares más allá de donde están ustedes, pero sin incursionar en la obra de otro, para no jactarnos en los trabajos ajenos.

in the beyond you to proclaim good news, not in another's line in regard to the things made ready, to boast;

17 P ero si alguno quiere jactarse, que lo haga en el Señor;

and he who is boasting -- in the Lord let him boast;

18 p orque no es aprobado el que se alaba a sí mismo, sino aquel a quien Dios alaba.

for not he who is commending himself is approved, but he whom the Lord doth commend.
