1 D avid pasó revista a sus soldados, y al frente de ellos puso comandantes de mil y de cien hombres.

And David inspecteth the people who with him, and setteth over them heads of thousands and heads of hundreds,

2 U na tercera parte del ejército la puso bajo el mando de Joab; otra tercera parte la puso bajo el mando de Abisay, que era hijo de Seruyá y hermano de Joab; y la otra tercera parte la puso bajo el mando de Itay el gatita. A todo el ejército le dijo: «También yo iré con ustedes.»

and David sendeth the third of the people by the hand of Joab, and the third by the hand of Abishai, son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, and the third by the hand of Ittai the Gittite, and the king saith unto the people, `I certainly go out -- I also -- with you.'

3 P ero sus hombres objetaron: «Tú no debes venir con nosotros. A ellos no va a importarles si nosotros huimos, o si la mitad de nuestro ejército cae en batalla; tú, en cambio, vales más que diez mil de nosotros. Lo mejor es que tú nos apoyes desde la ciudad.»

And the people say, `Thou dost not go out, for if we utterly flee, they do not set heart upon us; and if half of us die, they do not set heart unto us -- for now like us ten thousand; and now, better that thou be to us from the city for an helper.'

4 E l rey les dijo: «Voy a seguir su consejo.» Y se quedó a la entrada de la ciudad, mientras su ejército salía en escuadrones de cien y de mil soldados.

And the king saith unto them, `That which is good in your eyes I do;' and the king standeth at the side of the gate, and all the people have gone out by hundreds and by thousands,

5 A Joab, Abisay e Itay les instruyó que, por amor a él, trataran con bondad a su hijo Absalón. Y todos los soldados escucharon lo que el rey ordenó a los capitanes acerca de Absalón.

and the king chargeth Joab, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, `Gently -- for me, for the youth, for Absalom;' and all the people heard in the king's charging all the heads concerning Absalom.

6 L uego, el ejército de David salió para luchar contra los israelitas, y la batalla se libró en el Bosque de Efraín.

And the people goeth out into the field to meet Israel, and the battle is in a forest of Ephraim;

7 E l ejército de David arremetió con fuerza contra el ejército de Absalón y les causó una matanza como de veinte mil hombres.

and smitten there are the people of Israel before the servants of David, and the smiting there is great on that day -- twenty thousand;

8 L a lucha se generalizó por todo el país, pero fueron más las muertes causadas por el bosque que las causadas por la espada.

and the battle is there scattered over the face of all the land, and the forest multiplieth to devour among the people more than those whom the sword hath devoured in that day.

9 E n cierto momento Absalón, que montaba un mulo, se enfrentó con los hombres de David, pero el mulo se metió por debajo de las espesas ramas de una encina, y el cabello de Absalón se enredó en la encina, y Absalón quedó suspendido en el aire, mientras que el mulo siguió adelante.

And Absalom meeteth before the servants of David, and Absalom is riding on the mule, and the mule cometh in under an entangled bough of the great oak, and his head taketh hold on the oak, and he is placed between the heavens and the earth, and the mule that under him hath passed on.

10 U no de los soldados de Joab lo vio, y fue a decirle a Joab que había visto a Absalón pendiendo de una encina.

And one man seeth, and declareth to Joab, and saith, `Lo, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.'

11 E ntonces Joab le dijo: «Si lo viste, ¿por qué no le diste muerte y lo derribaste? Me hubiera gustado darte diez monedas de plata y un buen cinturón.»

And Joab saith to the man who is declaring to him, `And lo, thou hast seen -- and wherefore didst thou not smite him there to the earth -- and on me to give to thee ten silverlings and one girdle?'

12 P ero el soldado le respondió: «Aun si me hubieras ofrecido mil monedas de plata, yo no las habría aceptado, pues jamás atentaría contra la vida del hijo del rey. Nosotros oímos cuando el rey les ordenó, a ti, a Abisay y a Itay, no hacerle daño al joven Absalón.

And the man saith unto Joab, `Yea, though I am weighing on my hand a thousand silverlings, I do not put forth my hand unto the son of the king; for in our ears hath the king charged thee, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Observe ye who against the youth -- against Absalom;

13 A demás, yo habría puesto en peligro mi vida, pues al rey nada se le escapa, y tú mismo te habrías puesto en contra mía.»

or I had done against my soul a vain thing, and no matter is hid from the king, and thou -- thou dost station thyself over-against.'

14 J oab le respondió: «No voy a perder mi tiempo contigo.» Y al ver que Absalón pendía de la encina y aún estaba con vida, tomó tres dardos y se los clavó a Absalón en el corazón.

And Joab saith, `Not right -- I tarry before thee;' and he taketh three darts in his hand, and striketh them into the heart of Absalom, while he alive, in the midst of the oak.

15 D iez jóvenes escuderos que acompañaban a Joab, cuando vieron herido a Absalón, lo rodearon y lo remataron.

And they go round -- ten youths bearing weapons of Joab -- and smite Absalom, and put him to death.

16 E ntonces Joab ordenó que tocaran la trompeta para que sus soldados se detuvieran y dejaran de perseguir a los israelitas,

And Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and the people turneth back from pursuing after Israel, for Joab hath kept back the people;

17 l os cuales huyeron a sus casas. Luego, los hombres de Joab cavaron un gran hoyo en el bosque, y allí arrojaron el cuerpo de Absalón y lo cubrieron con muchas piedras.

and they take Absalom and cast him in the forest unto the great pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones, and all Israel have fled -- each to his tent.

18 C uando Absalón vivía, levantó una torre en el valle del rey, a la cual le puso su nombre para que el pueblo lo recordara, pues dijo: «Yo no tengo ningún hijo que perpetúe mi nombre.» Hasta el día de hoy, a esa torre se le conoce como «la torre de Absalón».

And Absalom hath taken, and setteth up for himself in his life, the standing-pillar that in the king's valley, for he said, `I have no son to cause my name to be remembered;' and he calleth the standing-pillar by his own name, and it is called `The monument of Absalom' unto this day.

19 A jimaz hijo de Sadoc fue a preguntarle a Joab: «¿Debo correr y llevarle la noticia al rey de que el Señor lo ha librado de sus enemigos?»

And Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, `Let me run, I pray thee, and I bear the king tidings, for Jehovah hath delivered him out of the hand of his enemies;'

20 Y Joab le respondió: «No conviene que vayas hoy. Es mejor que vayas otro día, pues la noticia es que el hijo del rey ha muerto.»

and Joab saith to him, `Thou art not a man of tidings this day, but thou hast borne tidings on another day, and this day thou dost not bear tidings, because the king's son dead.'

21 J oab llamó entonces a un etíope, y le ordenó ir ante el rey y contarle lo que había visto. El etíope hizo una reverencia y salió corriendo.

And Joab saith to Cushi, `Go, declare to the king that which thou hast seen;' and Cushi boweth himself to Joab, and runneth.

22 P ero Ajimaz hijo de Sadoc insistió y le dijo a Joab: «De todos modos, también yo voy a ir detrás del etíope.» Joab le dijo: «Hijo mío, ¿y para qué vas a ir tú? ¡Por estas noticias no vas a recibir ningún premio!»

And Ahimaaz son of Zadok addeth again, and saith unto Joab, `And whatever it be, let me run, I pray thee, I also, after the Cushite.' And Joab saith, `Why this -- thou art running, my son, and for thee there are no tidings found?' --

23 P ero Ajimaz respondió: «No importa. Creo que debo ir.» Entonces Joab le dijo: «Adelante, pues.» Y Ajimaz salió corriendo, y en la llanura se adelantó al etíope.

`And, whatever it be, let me run.' And he saith to him, `Run;' and Ahimaaz runneth the way of the circuit, and passeth by the Cushite.

24 D avid estaba sentado entre las dos puertas de la ciudad cuando el atalaya subió a la torre sobre la puerta de la muralla. De pronto, vio que alguien venía solo y corriendo hacia la ciudad.

And David is sitting between the two gates, and the watchman goeth unto the roof of the gate, unto the wall, and lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, a man running by himself.

25 E ntonces gritó desde allí para que el rey supiera lo que estaba viendo, y David dijo: «Si viene solo, trae buenas nuevas.» Mientras el mensajero se iba acercando,

And the watchman calleth, and declareth to the king, and the king saith, `If by himself, tidings in his mouth;' and he cometh, coming on and drawing near.

26 e l atalaya vio que otro hombre corría detrás del primero, y se lo dijo al guardián. Cuando el rey supo que otro hombre venía corriendo solo, dijo: «Ése es otro mensajero.»

And the watchman seeth another man running, and the watchman calleth unto the gatekeeper, and saith, `Lo, a man running by himself;' and the king saith, `Also this one is bearing tidings.'

27 E n cuanto el primero se acercó más, el atalaya lo reconoció y dijo: «Por su forma de correr, creo que es Ajimaz hijo de Sadoc.» Entonces el rey dijo: «Si es Ajimaz, seguramente trae buenas noticias, pues es un buen hombre.»

And the watchman saith, `I see the running of the first as the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok.' And the king saith, `This a good man, and with good tidings he cometh.'

28 C uando Ajimaz llegó, se inclinó ante el rey, le deseó paz y le dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor tu Dios, porque ha entregado a los hombres que se habían sublevado contra Su Majestad.»

And Ahimaaz calleth and saith unto the king, `Peace;' and he boweth himself to the king, on his face, to the earth, and saith, `Blessed Jehovah thy God who hath shut up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'

29 E l rey preguntó: «¿El joven Absalón está bien?» Y Ajimaz respondió: «Cuando Joab envió al otro mensajero y a mí, vi que había una gran confusión, pero no supe de qué se trataba.»

And the king saith, `Peace to the youth -- to Absalom?' And Ahimaaz saith, `I saw the great multitude, at the sending away of the servant of the king, even thy servant Joab, and I have not known what.'

30 E l rey ordenó a Ajimaz pasar y esperar un poco. Y Ajimaz se quedó de pie.

And the king saith, `Turn round, station thyself here;' and he turneth round and standeth still.

31 E n ese momento llegó el etíope, y dijo: «¡Buenas noticias para Su Majestad! Hoy el Señor ha defendido tu causa, y han muerto los que se habían rebelado contra ti.»

And lo, the Cushite hath come, and the Cushite saith, `Let tidings be proclaimed, my lord, O king; for Jehovah hath delivered thee to-day out of the hand of all those rising up against thee.'

32 E l rey le preguntó: «El joven Absalón, ¿se encuentra bien?» Y el etíope respondió: «¡Que todos los enemigos de Su Majestad, y todos los que se subleven contra Su Majestad y busquen su mal, acaben como ese joven!»

And the king saith unto the Cushite, `Peace to the youth -- to Absalom?' And the Cushite saith, `Let them be -- as the youth -- the enemies of my lord the king, and all who have risen up against thee for evil.'

33 E l rey se estremeció, y mientras subía a su cuarto, se echó a llorar y decía: «¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Cómo quisiera yo haber muerto en tu lugar, Absalón, hijo mío!»

And the king trembleth, and goeth up on the upper chamber of the gate, and weepeth, and thus he hath said in his going, `My son! Absalom my son; my son Absalom; oh that I had died for thee, Absalom, my son, my son.'
