1 » En el mes de Nisán, del año veinte del reinado de Artajerjes, mientras yo me disponía a servirle vino al rey, éste me miró, y como nunca antes me había visto triste en su presencia,

And it cometh to pass, in the month of Nisan, the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine before him, and I lift up the wine, and give to the king, and I had not been sad before him;

2 m e preguntó: “¿Por qué estás triste, Nehemías? Enfermo no estás. Lo que reflejas es un profundo pesar.” »Yo sentí mucho miedo,

and the king saith to me, `Wherefore thy face sad, and thou not sick? this is nothing except sadness of heart;' and I fear very much,

3 y le respondí: “¡Larga vida a Su Majestad! ¿Cómo no estar triste, si la ciudad donde mis padres están sepultados se encuentra en ruinas, y sus puertas han sido consumidas por el fuego?”

and say to the king, `Let the king to the age live! wherefore should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the graves of my fathers, a waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?'

4 » El rey me preguntó entonces: “¿Y qué es lo que pides?” Yo oré al Dios de los cielos,

And the king saith to me, `For what art thou seeking?' and I pray unto the God of the heavens,

5 y le respondí al rey: “Si es la voluntad de Su Majestad, y este siervo suyo es digno de su bondad, permítame Su Majestad ir a Judá, a la ciudad donde están sepultados mis padres, para reedificarla.”

and say to the king, `If to the king good, and if thy servant be pleasing before thee, that thou send me unto Judah, unto the city of the graves of my fathers, and I built it.'

6 » El rey, que tenía a su lado a la reina, me preguntó: “¿Cuánto tiempo necesitas? ¿Cuándo piensas regresar?” Y yo le dije el tiempo que necesitaba, y el rey consintió en dejarme partir.

And the king saith to me (and the queen is sitting near him), `How long is thy journey? and when dost thou return?' and it is good before the king, and he sendeth me away, and I set to him a time.

7 » También le dije: “Si es la voluntad de Su Majestad, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores del otro lado del río, para que me permitan pasar y yo pueda llegar a Judá,

And I say to the king, `If to the king good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:

8 y una carta más para que Asaf, el guardián de los bosques del rey, me provea de la madera necesaria para reforzar las puertas del palacio del Templo, las murallas de la ciudad, y la casa donde voy a vivir.” »Todo eso me lo concedió el rey, porque la bondad de mi Dios estaba conmigo.

and a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;' and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

9 » Fui entonces con los gobernadores del otro lado del río, y les entregué las cartas del rey. Además, el rey había enviado a sus capitanes y a soldados de caballería, para que me escoltaran.

And I come in unto the governors beyond the River, and give to them the letters of the king; and the king sendeth with me heads of a force, and horsemen;

10 P ero cuando lo supieron Sambalat el horonita y Tobías, el siervo amonita, se enojaron mucho, pues no les gustó que alguien se preocupara por el bien de los israelitas. Nehemías anima al pueblo a reconstruir las murallas

and Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them -- a great evil -- that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.

11 » Tres días después de haber llegado a Jerusalén,

And I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,

12 m e levanté por la noche y salí, acompañado de varios hombres y sin que nadie supiera lo que Dios me había inspirado hacer en Jerusalén. No llevaba yo más caballo que el que iba montando.

and I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.

13 S alí de noche y recorrí la puerta del Valle que va a la fuente del Dragón y a la puerta del Basurero, y pude ver que las murallas de Jerusalén habían sido derribadas y que las puertas habían sido consumidas por el fuego.

And I go out through the gate of the valley by night, and unto the front of the fountain of the dragon, and unto the gate of the dunghill, and I am measuring about the walls of Jerusalem, that are broken down, and its gates consumed with fire.

14 L uego me dirigí a la puerta de la Fuente y al estanque del Rey, pero como mi caballo no podía pasar

And I pass over unto the gate of the fountain, and unto the pool of the king, and there is no place for the beast under me to pass over,

15 s ubí al torrente y observé la muralla. Aprovechando que era de noche, la rodeé y luego entré por la puerta del Valle. Después de eso, regresé.

and I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.

16 L os oficiales no supieron a dónde había ido, ni qué había hecho, porque a nadie le había dicho nada; ni al pueblo ni a los sacerdotes, y menos aún a gente importante. Ninguno de los que estaban reconstruyendo la ciudad supo lo que hice.

And the prefects have not known whither I have gone, and what I am doing; and to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the freemen, and to the prefects, and to the rest of those doing the work, hitherto I have not declared;

17 » Cuando regresé, les dije: “¿Ya vieron lo mal que estamos? Jerusalén está desierta, y todas sus puertas han sido quemadas. ¡Anímense y vayamos todos a levantar las murallas de Jerusalén. ¡Basta ya de esta vergüenza!”

and I say unto them, `Ye are seeing the evil that we are in, in that Jerusalem waste, and its gates have been burnt with fire; come and we build the wall of Jerusalem, and we are not any more a reproach.'

18 » En cuanto les conté la gran ayuda que mi Dios me había brindado, y lo que el rey me había dicho, todos exclamaron: “¡Sí, comencemos a reconstruir las murallas!” Y se dispusieron a poner manos a la obra.

And I declare to them the hand of my God that is good upon me, and also the words of the king that he said to me, and they say, `Let us rise, and we have built;' and they strengthen their hands for good.

19 » Pero la noticia llegó a oídos de Sambalat el horonita, de Tobías, el siervo amonita, y de Guesén el árabe, y se burlaron de nosotros y despectivamente nos dijeron: “¿Qué es lo que hacen? ¿Acaso están rebelándose contra el rey?”

And Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, and they mock at us, and despise us, and say, `What this thing that ye are doing? against the king are ye rebelling?'

20 » Yo les respondí: “El Dios de los cielos es quien nos ayuda. Nosotros, sus siervos, hemos decidido reconstruir las murallas, y lo vamos a hacer. Ustedes no tienen ninguna autoridad, ni arte ni parte en Jerusalén.”

And I return them word, and say to them, `The God of the heavens -- He doth give prosperity to us, and we His servants rise and have built; and to you there is no portion, and right, and memorial in Jerusalem.'
