1 Y fue en el mes de Nisán, en el año veinte del rey Artajerjes, que estando ya el vino delante de él, tomé el vino, y lo di al rey. Y como yo no había estado antes triste en su presencia,

And it cometh to pass, in the month of Nisan, the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine before him, and I lift up the wine, and give to the king, and I had not been sad before him;

2 m e dijo el rey: ¿Por qué está triste tu rostro, pues no estás enfermo? No es esto sino quebranto de corazón. Entonces temí en gran manera.

and the king saith to me, `Wherefore thy face sad, and thou not sick? this is nothing except sadness of heart;' and I fear very much,

3 Y dije al rey: El rey viva para siempre. ¿Cómo no estará triste mi rostro, cuando la ciudad, casa de los sepulcros de mis padres, está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas del fuego?

and say to the king, `Let the king to the age live! wherefore should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the graves of my fathers, a waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?'

4 Y me dijo el rey: ¿Qué cosa pides? Entonces oré al Dios de los cielos,

And the king saith to me, `For what art thou seeking?' and I pray unto the God of the heavens,

5 y dije al rey: Si al rey place, y si agrada tu siervo delante de ti, que me envíes a Judá, a la ciudad de los sepulcros de mis padres, y la reedificaré.

and say to the king, `If to the king good, and if thy servant be pleasing before thee, that thou send me unto Judah, unto the city of the graves of my fathers, and I built it.'

6 E ntonces el rey me dijo (y la reina estaba sentada junto a él): ¿Hasta cuándo será tu viaje, y cuándo volverás? Y el asunto agradó al rey, y me envió, y yo le señalé el tiempo.

And the king saith to me (and the queen is sitting near him), `How long is thy journey? and when dost thou return?' and it is good before the king, and he sendeth me away, and I set to him a time.

7 A demás dije al rey: Si al rey place, que se me den cartas para los capitanes del otro lado del río, que me franqueen el paso hasta que llegue a Judá;

And I say to the king, `If to the king good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:

8 y carta para Asaf, guarda de la huerta del rey, a fin que me dé madera para enmaderar los portales del palacio de la Casa, y para el muro de la ciudad, y la casa donde entraré. Y me lo otorgó el rey, según la benéfica mano del SEÑOR sobre mí.

and a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;' and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

9 Y vine luego a los capitanes del otro lado del río, y les di las cartas del rey. Y el rey envió conmigo príncipes del ejército y gente de a caballo.

And I come in unto the governors beyond the River, and give to them the letters of the king; and the king sendeth with me heads of a force, and horsemen;

10 Y oyéndolo Sanbalat horonita, y Tobías, el siervo amonita, les disgustó en extremo que viniera alguno para procurar el bien de los hijos de Israel.

and Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them -- a great evil -- that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.

11 L legué pues a Jerusalén, y estuve allí tres días,

And I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,

12 y me levanté de noche, yo y unos pocos varones conmigo, y no declaré a hombre alguno lo que Dios había puesto en mi corazón que hiciera en Jerusalén; ni había bestia conmigo, excepto la bestia en que cabalgaba.

and I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.

13 Y salí de noche por la puerta del Valle hacia la fuente del Dragón y a la puerta del Muladar; y consideré los muros de Jerusalén que estaban derribados, y sus puertas que estaban consumidas del fuego.

And I go out through the gate of the valley by night, and unto the front of the fountain of the dragon, and unto the gate of the dunghill, and I am measuring about the walls of Jerusalem, that are broken down, and its gates consumed with fire.

14 P asé luego a la puerta de la Fuente, y al estanque del Rey; mas no había lugar por donde pasara la bestia en que iba.

And I pass over unto the gate of the fountain, and unto the pool of the king, and there is no place for the beast under me to pass over,

15 Y subí por el arroyo de noche, y consideré el muro, y regresando entré por la puerta del Valle, y me volví.

and I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.

16 Y no sabían los magistrados adónde yo había ido, ni qué había hecho; ni hasta entonces lo había yo declarado a los judíos y sacerdotes, ni a los nobles y magistrados, ni a los demás que hacían la obra.

And the prefects have not known whither I have gone, and what I am doing; and to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the freemen, and to the prefects, and to the rest of those doing the work, hitherto I have not declared;

17 Y les dije: Vosotros veis el mal en que estamos, que Jerusalén está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas del fuego; venid, y edifiquemos el muro de Jerusalén, y no seamos más en oprobio.

and I say unto them, `Ye are seeing the evil that we are in, in that Jerusalem waste, and its gates have been burnt with fire; come and we build the wall of Jerusalem, and we are not any more a reproach.'

18 E ntonces les declaré cómo la mano de mi Dios era buena sobre mí, y asimismo las palabras del rey, que me había dicho. Y dijeron: Levantémonos, y edifiquemos. Y confortaron sus manos para bien.

And I declare to them the hand of my God that is good upon me, and also the words of the king that he said to me, and they say, `Let us rise, and we have built;' and they strengthen their hands for good.

19 M as habiéndolo oído Sanbalat horonita, y Tobías el siervo amonita, y Gesem el árabe, escarnecieron de nosotros, y nos despreciaron, diciendo: ¿Qué es esto que hacéis vosotros? ¿Os rebeláis contra el rey?

And Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, and they mock at us, and despise us, and say, `What this thing that ye are doing? against the king are ye rebelling?'

20 Y les volví respuesta, y les dije: El Dios de los cielos, él nos prosperará, y nosotros sus siervos nos levantaremos y edificaremos; porque vosotros no tenéis parte, ni justicia, ni memoria en Jerusalén.

And I return them word, and say to them, `The God of the heavens -- He doth give prosperity to us, and we His servants rise and have built; and to you there is no portion, and right, and memorial in Jerusalem.'
