1 ¶ Me volví y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, y que no tienen consolador; y que la fuerza estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.

And I have turned, and I see all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and lo, the tear of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and at the hand of their oppressors power, and they have no comforter.

2 Y alabé yo a los finados que ya murieron, más que a los vivientes que hasta ahora están vivos.

And I am praising the dead who have already died above the living who are yet alive.

3 Y tuve por mejor que ellos al que no ha sido aún, porque no ha visto las malas obras que se hacen debajo del sol.

And better than both of them he who hath not yet been, in that he hath not seen the evil work that hath been done under the sun.

4 ¶ He visto asimismo que todo trabajo y toda rectitud de obras mueve la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

And I have seen all the labour, and all the benefit of the work, because for it a man is the envy of his neighbour. Even this vanity and vexation of spirit.

5 E l loco dobla sus manos y come su misma carne.

The fool is clasping his hands, and eating his own flesh:

6 M ás vale un puño lleno con descanso, que ambos puños llenos con trabajo y aflicción de espíritu.

`Better a handful quietness, than two handfuls labour and vexation of spirit.'

7 ¶ Yo me volví otra vez, y vi otra vanidad debajo del sol.

And I have turned, and I see a vain thing under the sun:

8 E s el hombre solo y sin sucesor; que ni tiene hijo ni hermano; mas nunca cesa de trabajar, ni aun sus ojos se sacian de sus riquezas, ni piensa: ¿Para quién trabajo yo, y defraudo mi alma del bien? También esto es vanidad, y duro trabajo.

There is one, and there is not a second; even son or brother he hath not, and there is no end to all his labour! His eye also is not satisfied with riches, and, `For whom am I labouring and bereaving my soul of good?' This also is vanity, it is a sad travail.

9 M ejores son dos que uno; porque tienen mejor paga de su trabajo.

The two better than the one, in that they have a good reward by their labour.

10 P orque si cayeren, el uno levantará a su compañero; mas ¡ay del solo! que cuando cayere, no habrá segundo que lo levante.

For if they fall, the one raiseth up his companion, but wo to the one who falleth and there is not a second to raise him up!

11 T ambién si dos durmieren juntos, se calentarán; mas ¿cómo se calentará uno solo?

Also, if two lie down, then they have heat, but how hath one heat?

12 Y si alguno prevaleciere contra uno, dos estarán contra él; y cordón de tres dobleces no presto se rompe.

And if the one strengthen himself, the two stand against him; and the threefold cord is not hastily broken.

13 ¶ Mejor es el niño pobre y sabio, que el rey viejo y loco que no puede ser avisado.

Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who hath not known to be warned any more.

14 P orque de la cárcel salió para reinar; aunque en su reino nació pobre.

For from a house of prisoners he hath come out to reign, for even in his own kingdom he hath been poor.

15 V i a todos los vivientes debajo del sol caminando con el niño, sucesor, que estará en lugar de aquel.

I have seen all the living, who are walking under the sun, with the second youth who doth stand in his place;

16 N o tiene fin todo el pueblo que fue antes de ellos; tampoco los que vendrán después estarán con él contentos. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

there is no end to all the people, to all who were before them; also, the latter rejoice not in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
