1 M i sono quindi messo a considerare tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole, ed ecco, le lacrime degli oppressi, i quali non hanno chi li consoli; dal lato dei loro oppressori c'era la forza, ma neppure essi hanno chi li consoli.

And I have turned, and I see all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and lo, the tear of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and at the hand of their oppressors power, and they have no comforter.

2 P er cui ho ritenuto i morti, che sono già morti, piú felici dei vivi che sono ancora in vita;

And I am praising the dead who have already died above the living who are yet alive.

3 m a ancor piú felice degli uni e degli altri, colui che non è mai esistito e non ha ancora visto le azioni malvagie che si commettono sotto il sole.

And better than both of them he who hath not yet been, in that he hath not seen the evil work that hath been done under the sun.

4 H o pure visto che ogni fatica e ogni successo nel lavoro risultano in invidia dell'uno contro l'altro. Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

And I have seen all the labour, and all the benefit of the work, because for it a man is the envy of his neighbour. Even this vanity and vexation of spirit.

5 L o stolto incrocia le braccia e divora la propria carne.

The fool is clasping his hands, and eating his own flesh:

6 V al piú una manciata con riposo che due manciate con fatica, cercando di afferrare il vento.

`Better a handful quietness, than two handfuls labour and vexation of spirit.'

7 H o visto anche un'altra vanità sotto il sole:

And I have turned, and I see a vain thing under the sun:

8 u no è completamente solo e non ha né figlio né fratello, eppure la sua fatica non ha fine e i suoi occhi non sono sazi di ricchezze. Ma non si chiede: «Per chi mi affatico e mi privo di ogni bene?». Anche questo è vanità e una fatica penosa.

There is one, and there is not a second; even son or brother he hath not, and there is no end to all his labour! His eye also is not satisfied with riches, and, `For whom am I labouring and bereaving my soul of good?' This also is vanity, it is a sad travail.

9 D ue valgon meglio di uno solo, perché hanno una buona ricompensa per la loro fatica.

The two better than the one, in that they have a good reward by their labour.

10 S e infatti cadono, l'uno rialza l'altro; ma guai a chi è solo e cade, perché non ha nessun altro che lo rialzi!

For if they fall, the one raiseth up his companion, but wo to the one who falleth and there is not a second to raise him up!

11 C osí pure se due dormono assieme si possono riscaldare; ma uno solo come farà a riscaldarsi?

Also, if two lie down, then they have heat, but how hath one heat?

12 S e uno può sopraffare chi è solo, due gli possono resistere; una corda a tre capi non si rompe tanto presto.

And if the one strengthen himself, the two stand against him; and the threefold cord is not hastily broken.

13 E ' meglio un giovane povero e saggio che un re vecchio e stolto, che non sa piú ricevere ammonimenti.

Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who hath not known to be warned any more.

14 P oiché il giovane è uscito di prigione per regnare, anche se era nato povero nel suo regno.

For from a house of prisoners he hath come out to reign, for even in his own kingdom he hath been poor.

15 H o visto tutti i viventi che camminano sotto il sole unirsi al giovane, che va a mettersi al posto dell'altro.

I have seen all the living, who are walking under the sun, with the second youth who doth stand in his place;

16 E ra innumerevole tutto il popolo, tutti quelli che erano stati prima di loro. Tuttavia quelli che verranno dopo non saranno contenti di lui! Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

there is no end to all the people, to all who were before them; also, the latter rejoice not in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
