1 S e un uomo ripudia la propria moglie e questa se ne va da lui e diviene moglie di un altro, tornerà egli forse ancora da lei? Non sarebbe quel paese grandemente profanato? Tu ti sei prostituita, con molti amanti; vorresti però ritornare da me?», dice l'Eterno.

Saying, `Lo, one sendeth away his wife, And she hath gone from him, And she hath been to another man, Doth he turn back unto her again? Greatly defiled is not that land? And thou hast committed whoredom with many lovers, And turn again to Me, an affirmation of Jehovah.

2 « Alza gli occhi verso le alture e guarda: dove non ti sei coricata con loro? Ti sei seduta accanto alle strade ad aspettarli, come un Arabo nel deserto, e hai contaminato il paese con le tue prostituzioni e con le tue malvagità.

Lift thine eyes to the high places, and see, Where hast thou not been lain with? On the ways thou hast sat for them, As an Arab in a wilderness, And thou defilest the land, By thy fornications, and by thy wickedness.

3 P erciò le piogge sono state trattenute e l'ultima pioggia, non c'è stata. Ma tu hai avuto una fronte da prostituta e hai rifiutato di vergognarti.

And withheld are showers, and gathered rain hath not been. The forehead of a whorish woman thou hast, Thou hast refused to be ashamed.

4 N on hai proprio ora gridato a me: "Padre mio, tu sei l'amico della mia giovinezza!

Hast thou not henceforth called to Me, `My father, Thou the leader of my youth?

5 R imarrà egli adirato per sempre? Conserverà l'ira sino alla fine?" Ecco, tu parli cosí, ma intanto commetti tutte le malvagità che puoi».

Doth He keep to the age? watch for ever?' Lo, these things thou hast spoken, And thou dost the evil things, and prevailest.

6 L 'Eterno mi disse al tempo del re Giosia: «Hai visto ciò che la ribelle, Israele ha fatto? E' andata sopra ogni alto monte e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante e là si è prostituita.

And Jehovah saith unto me, in the days of Josiah the king, `Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? She is going on every high mountain, and unto the place of every green tree, and committeth fornication there.

7 I o dicevo: "Dopo che avrà fatto tutte queste cose ritornerà a me" Ma non è tornata; e la sua perfida sorella Giuda l'ha visto.

And I say, after her doing all these, Unto Me thou dost turn back, and she hath not turned back, and see doth her treacherous sister Judah.

8 E sebbene io avessi ripudiato la ribelle Israele a motivo di tutti i suoi adultèri e le avessi dato il libello di divorzio, ho visto che la sua perfida sorella Giuda non ha avuto alcun timore, ma è andata anch'essa a prostituirsi,

And I see when (for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery) I have sent her away, and I give the bill of her divorce unto her, that treacherous Judah her sister hath not feared, and goeth and committeth fornication -- she also.

9 C osí con il rumore delle sue prostituzioni ha contaminato il paese e ha commesso adulterio con la pietra e con il legno

And it hath come to pass, from the vileness of her fornication, that the land is defiled, and she committeth fornication with stone and with wood.

10 N onostante tutto questo, la sua perfida sorella Giuda non è tornata a me con tutto il suo cuore, ma con simulazione», dice l'Eterno.

And even in all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned back unto Me with all her heart, but with falsehood, an affirmation of Jehovah.'

11 P oi l'Eterno mi disse: «La ribelle Israele si è mostrata piú giusta della perfida Giuda.

And Jehovah saith unto me: `Justified herself hath backsliding Israel, More than treacherous Judah.

12 V a' e proclama queste parole verso il nord, dicendo: "Torna, o ribelle Israele"», dice l'Eterno, «non farò ricadere la mia ira su di voi, perché io sono misericordioso», dice l'Eterno, «e non rimango adirato per sempre.

Go, and thou hast proclaimed these words toward the north, and hast said, Turn back, O backsliding Israel, An affirmation of Jehovah! I cause not Mine anger to fall upon you, For I kind, an affirmation of Jehovah, I watch not to the age.

13 S oltanto riconosci la tua iniquità, perché ti sei ribellata all'Eterno, il tuo DIO; hai profuso i tuoi favori agli stranieri sotto ogni albero verdeggiante e non hai dato ascolto alla mia voce», dice l'Eterno.

Only, know thine iniquity, For against Jehovah thy God thou hast transgressed, And thou dost scatter thy ways to strangers, Under every green tree, And to My voice thou hast not hearkened, An affirmation of Jehovah.

14 « Tornate o figli traviati», dice l'Eterno, «perché io ho sovranità su di voi. Vi prenderò uno da una città e due da una famiglia e vi ricondurrò a Sion.

Turn back, O backsliding sons, An affirmation of Jehovah. For I have ruled over you, And taken you one of a city, and two of a family, And have brought you to Zion,

15 V i darò quindi pastori secondo il mio cuore, che vi pasceranno con conoscenza e con sapienza.

And I have given to you shepherds According to Mine own heart, And they have fed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 E avverrà che quando vi sarete moltiplicati e sarete fecondi nel paese, in quei giorni», dice l'Eterno, «non si dirà piú: "L'arca del patto dell'Eterno". Non verrà piú in mente, non la ricorderanno piú, non andranno piú a vederla, non se ne farà un'altra.

And it hath come to pass, when ye are multiplied, And have been fruitful in the land, In those days -- an affirmation of Jehovah, They say not any more, `The ark of the covenant of Jehovah,' Nor doth it go up on the heart, Nor do they remember concerning it, Nor do they inspect, nor is it made again.

17 A llora Gerusalemme sarà chiamata "Il trono dell'Eterno"; tutte le nazioni si raduneranno presso di essa nel nome dell'Eterno, a Gerusalemme, e non cammineranno piú secondo la caparbietà del loro cuore malvagio.

At that time they cry to Jerusalem, `O throne of Jehovah,' And gathered unto her hath been all the nations, For the name of Jehovah, to Jerusalem, Nor do they go any more after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

18 I n quei giorni la casa di Giuda camminerà con la casa d'Israele e insieme verranno dal paese del nord al paese che io diedi in eredità ai vostri padri.

In those days do the house of Judah Go unto the house of Israel, And they come together from the land of the south, unto the land That I caused your fathers to inherit.

19 I o dicevo: "Quanto volentieri ti collocherei tra i miei figli e ti darei un paese delizioso, una splendida eredità fra tutte le nazioni" Dicevo: "Tu mi chiamerai: Padre mio!, e non ti allontanerai piú da me"

And I have said, How do I put thee among the sons, And give to thee a desirable land, A beauteous inheritance of the hosts of nations, And I say, My father -- ye do call to Me, And from after Me ye do not turn back.

20 M a come una donna è infedele al proprio marito, cosí voi siete stati infedeli a me, o casa d'Israele», dice l'Eterno.

But -- a woman hath deceived her friend, So ye have dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah.

21 U na voce si ode sulle alture; il pianto e le suppliche dei figli d'Israele, perché hanno pervertito la loro via e hanno dimenticato l'Eterno, il loro DIO.

A voice on high places is heard -- weeping, Supplications of the sons of Israel, For they have made perverse their way, They have forgotten Jehovah their God.

22 « Ritornate, o figli traviati, io guarirò le vostre ribellioni». «Ecco, noi veniamo a te, perché tu sei l'Eterno, il nostro DIO.

Turn back, O backsliding sons, I cause your backslidings to cease. -- Behold us, we have come to Thee, For Thou Jehovah our God.

23 E ' certamente vano l'aiuto che si aspetta dai colli e dal gran numero dei monti; certamente la salvezza, d'Israele è nell'Eterno, il nostro DIO.

Surely in vain from the heights, The multitude of mountains -- Surely in Jehovah our God the salvation of Israel.

24 Q uella cosa vergognosa ha divorato il frutto della fatica dei nostri padri fin dalla nostra giovinezza le loro pecore e i loro buoi, i loro figli e le loro figlie.

And the shameful thing hath devoured The labour of our fathers from our youth, Their flock and their herd, Their sons and their daughters.

25 C orichiamoci nella nostra vergogna e ci ricopra la nostra ignominia, perché abbiamo peccato contro l'Eterno il nostro DIO, noi e i nostri padri, dalla nostra giovinezza fino a questo giorno e non abbiamo dato ascolto alla voce dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO».

We have lain down in our shame, and cover us doth our confusion, For against Jehovah our God we have sinned, We, and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, Nor have we hearkened to the voice of Jehovah our God!
