1 C erto il vantarsi non mi è di alcun giovamento; verrò quindi alle visioni e rivelazioni del Signore.

To boast, really, is not profitable for me, for I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

2 I o conosco un uomo in Cristo che, quattordici anni fa (se con il corpo o fuori del corpo non lo so, Dio lo sa), fu rapito fino al terzo cielo.

I have known a man in Christ, fourteen years ago -- whether in the body I have not known, whether out of the body I have not known, God hath known -- such an one being caught away unto the third heaven;

3 E so che quell'uomo (se con il corpo o senza il corpo, non lo so, Dio lo sa),

and I have known such a man -- whether in the body, whether out of the body, I have not known, God hath known, --

4 f u rapito in paradiso e udí parole ineffabili, che non è lecito ad alcun uomo di proferire.

that he was caught away to the paradise, and heard unutterable sayings, that it is not possible for man to speak.

5 I o mi glorierò di quel tale, ma non mi glorierò di me stesso, se non delle mie debolezze.

Of such an one I will boast, and of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities,

6 A nche se volessi gloriarmi, non sarei un insensato perché direi la verità, ma me ne astengo, affinché nessuno mi giudichi di piú di quello che vede o sente da me.

for if I may wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for truth I will say; but I forebear, lest any one in regard to me may think anything above what he doth see me, or doth hear anything of me;

7 I noltre, affinché non m'insuperbisca per l'eccellenza delle rivelazioni, mi è stata data una spina nella carne, un angelo di Satana per schiaffeggiarmi affinché non m'insuperbisca.

and that by the exceeding greatness of the revelations I might not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of the Adversary, that he might buffet me, that I might not be exalted overmuch.

8 A questo riguardo ho pregato tre volte il Signore che lo allontanasse da me.

Concerning this thing thrice the Lord did I call upon, that it might depart from me,

9 M a egli mi ha detto: «La mia grazia ti basta, perché la mia potenza è portata a compimento nella debolezza». Perciò molto volentieri mi glorierò piuttosto delle mie debolezze, affinché la potenza di Cristo riposi su di me.

and He said to me, `Sufficient for thee is My grace, for My power in infirmity is perfected;' most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of the Christ may rest on me:

10 P erciò io mi diletto nelle debolezze, nelle ingiurie, nelle necessità, nelle persecuzioni, nelle avversità per amore di Cristo, perché quando io sono debole, allora sono forte.

wherefore I am well pleased in infirmities, in damages, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses -- for Christ; for whenever I am infirm, then I am powerful;

11 S ono diventato insensato vantandomi, voi mi ci avete costretto, poiché avrei dovuto essere raccomandato da voi, perché non sono stato per nulla inferiore ai sommi apostoli, benché io non sia niente.

I have become a fool -- boasting; ye -- ye did compel me; for I ought by you to have been commended, for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles -- even if I am nothing.

12 O ra i segni dell'apostolo sono stati messi in opera fra voi con grande pazienza, con segni e prodigi e con potenti operazioni.

The signs, indeed, of the apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds,

13 I n che cosa infatti siete stati da meno delle altre chiese, se non in questo, che io non vi sono stato d'aggravio? Perdonatemi questo torto.

for what is there in which ye were inferior to the rest of the assemblies, except that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this injustice!

14 E cco, questa è la terza volta che sono pronto a venire da voi, e non vi sarò d'aggravio, perché non cerco i vostri beni, ma voi; perché non sono i figli che devono accumulare per i genitori ma i genitori per i figli.

Lo, a third time I am ready to come unto you, and I will not be a burden to you, for I seek not yours, but you, for the children ought not for the parents to lay up, but the parents for the children,

15 I n quanto a me molto volentieri spenderò, anzi sarò speso per le anime vostre, anche se amandovi piú intensamente sono amato di meno.

and I most gladly will spend and be entirely spent for your souls, even if, more abundantly loving you, less I am loved.

16 M a sia pure che io non vi sono stato d'aggravio; tuttavia, essendo astuto, vi ho presi con frode.

And be it, I -- I did not burden you, but being crafty, with guile I did take you;

17 M i sono forse approfittato di voi per mezzo di qualcuno che vi ho mandato?

any one of those whom I have sent unto you -- by him did I take advantage of you?

18 H o pregato Tito di venire da voi e con lui ho mandato questo fratello. Tito si è approfittato di voi? Non abbiamo camminato col medesimo spirito e sulle medesime orme?

I entreated Titus, and did send with the brother; did Titus take advantage of you? in the same spirit did we not walk? -- did we not in the same steps?

19 P ensate di nuovo che cerchiamo di giustificarci davanti a voi? Noi parliamo davanti a Dio, in Cristo, e tutto ciò, carissimi, per la vostra edificazione.

Again, think ye that to you we are making defence? before God in Christ do we speak; and the all things, beloved, for your up-building,

20 T emo infatti che talora, quando verrò, non vi trovi come vorrei, e di essere anch'io trovato da voi quale non mi vorreste, che talora non ci siano fra voi contese, gelosie, ire, risse, diffamazioni, insinuazioni, superbie, tumulti;

for I fear lest, having come, not such as I wish I may find you, and I -- I may be found by you such as ye do not wish, lest there be strifes, envyings, wraths, revelries, evil-speakings, whisperings, puffings up, insurrections,

21 e che, venendo di nuovo fra voi, il mio Dio non mi umilii davanti a voi, e io non pianga su molti di quelli che in precedenza hanno peccato, e non si sono ravveduti dell'impurità, della fornicazione e della dissolutezza che hanno commesso.

lest again having come, my God may humble me in regard to you, and I may bewail many of those having sinned before, and not having reformed concerning the uncleanness, and whoredom, and lasciviousness, that they did practise.
