And it cometh to pass, after days, in the days of wheat-harvest, that Samson looketh after his wife, with a kid of the goats, and saith, `I go in unto my wife, to the inner chamber;' and her father hath not permitted him to go in,

2 e gli disse: «Pensavo proprio che tu l'odiassi, per cui l'ho data al tuo compagno; sua sorella minore non è ancora piú bella di lei? Prendila dunque al suo posto».

and her father saith, I certainly said, that thou didst certainly hate her, and I give her to thy companion; is not her sister -- the young one -- better than she? Let her be, I pray thee, to thee, instead of her.'

3 S ansone rispose loro: «Questa volta, non avrò alcuna colpa verso i Filistei, se farò loro del male».

And Samson saith of them, `I am more innocent this time than the Philistines, though I am doing with them evil.'

4 C osì Sansone se ne andò e catturò trecento volpi; prese quindi delle fiaccole, volse le volpi coda contro coda e mise una fiaccola tra le due code.

And Samson goeth and catcheth three hundred foxes, and taketh torches, and turneth tail unto tail, and putteth a torch between the two tails, in the midst,

5 P oi accese le fiaccole e lasciò andare le volpi per i campi di grano dei Filistei, e bruciò i covoni ammucchiati e il grano ancora in piedi e persino le vigne e gli uliveti.

and kindleth fire in the torches, and sendeth out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burneth from heap even unto standing corn, even unto vineyard -- olive-yard.

6 A llora i Filistei chiesero: «Chi ha fatto questo?». Fu risposto: «Sansone, il genero dell'uomo di Timnah, perché questi gli ha preso la moglie, e l'ha data in sposa al suo compagno». Così i Filistei salirono e diedero alle fiamme lei e suo padre.

And the Philistines say, `Who hath done this?' And they say, `Samson, son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken away his wife, and giveth her to his companion;' and the Philistines go up, and burn her and her father with fire.

7 S ansone disse loro: «Poiché avete fatto questo, io farò certamente vendetta su di voi, ma poi smetterò».

And Samson saith to them, `Though ye do thus, nevertheless I am avenged on you, and afterwards I cease!'

8 C osì li colpì spietatamente, facendone un grande massacro. Poi discese e rimase nella caverna della roccia di Etam.

And he smiteth them hip and thigh -- a great smiting, and goeth down and dwelleth in the cleft of the rock Etam.

9 A llora i Filistei salirono, si accamparono in Giuda e si distesero fino a Lehi.

And the Philistines go up, and encamp in Judah, and are spread out in Lehi,

10 G li uomini di Giuda dissero loro: «Perché siete saliti contro di noi?». Essi risposero: «Siamo saliti per catturare Sansone e per fare a lui ciò che ha fatto a noi».

and the men of Judah say, `Why have ye come up against us?' and they say, `To bind Samson we have come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.'

11 A llora tremila uomini di Giuda scesero alla caverna della roccia di Etam e dissero a Sansone: «Non sai che i Filistei ci dominano? Che è dunque questo che ci hai fatto?». Egli rispose loro: «Ciò che essi hanno fatto a me, io l'ho fatto a loro».

And three thousand men of Judah go down unto the cleft of the rock Etam, and say to Samson, `Hast thou now known that the Philistines are rulers over us? and what this thou hast done to us?' And he saith to them, `As they did to me, so I did to them.'

12 E ssi gli dissero: «Noi siamo discesi per catturarti e darti nelle mani dei Filistei». Sansone rispose loro: «Giuratemi che voi stessi non mi ucciderete».

And they say to him, `To bind thee we have come down -- to give thee into the hand of the Philistines.' And Samson saith to them, `Swear to me, lest ye fall upon me yourselves.'

13 E ssi allora gli parlarono, dicendo: «No, ti legheremo soltanto e ti daremo nelle loro mani; ma certamente non ti uccideremo». Così lo legarono con due funi nuove e lo fecero uscire dalla caverna.

And they speak to him, saying, No, but we certainly bind thee, and have given thee into their hand, and we certainly do not put thee to death;' and they bind him with two thick bands, new ones, and bring him up from the rock.

14 Q uando giunse a Lehi, i Filistei gli vennero incontro con grida di gioia; ma lo Spirito dell'Eterno venne su di lui con potenza, e le funi che aveva alle braccia divennero come fili di lino a cui si dà fuoco; e i legami gli caddero dalle mani,

He hath come unto Lehi -- and the Philistines have shouted at meeting him -- and the Spirit of Jehovah prospereth over him, and the thick bands which on his arms are as flax which they burn with fire, and his bands are wasted from off his hands,

15 T rovata quindi una mascella d'asino ancora fresca, stese la mano e l'afferrò e con essa uccise mille uomini.

and he findeth a fresh jaw-bone of an ass, and putteth forth his hand and taketh it, and smiteth with it -- a thousand men.

16 A llora Sansone disse: «Con una mascella d'asino, mucchi su mucchi! Con una mascella d'asino ho ucciso mille uomini».

And Samson saith, `With a jaw-bone of the ass -- an ass upon asses -- with a jaw-bone of the ass I have smitten a thousand men.'

17 Q uand'ebbe finito di parlare, gettò via di mano la mascella e chiamò quel luogo Ramath-Lehi.

And it cometh to pass when he finisheth speaking, that he casteth away the jaw-bone out of his hand, and calleth that place Ramath-Lehi;

18 P oi ebbe gran sete e invocò l'Eterno, dicendo: «Tu hai concesso questa grande liberazione per mano del tuo servo; ma dovrò ora morire di sete e cadere nelle mani degli incirconcisi?».

and he thirsteth exceedingly, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Thou -- Thou hast given by the hand of Thy servant this great salvation; and now, I die with thirst, and have fallen into the hand of the uncircumcised.'

19 A llora DIO fendè la roccia concava che è a Lehi, e ne uscì dell'acqua. Egli bevve, il suo spirito si rianimò ed egli riprese vita. Perciò chiamò quella fonte En-Hakkore; essa esiste a Lehi anche oggi.

And God cleaveth the hollow place which in Lehi, and waters come out of it, and he drinketh, and his spirit cometh back, and he reviveth; therefore hath called its name `The fountain of him who is calling,' which in Lehi unto this day.

20 S ansone fu giudice d'Israele al tempo dei Filistei per vent'anni.

And he judgeth Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
