1 Q uando Sanballat venne a sapere che noi stavamo ricostruendo le mura, si adirò, s'indignò grandemente e scherní i Giudei,

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocketh at the Jews,

2 e disse davanti ai suoi fratelli e ai soldati di Samaria: «Che cosa stanno facendo questi rammolliti Giudei? Si fortificheranno? Offriranno sacrifici? Finiranno in un giorno? Faranno forse rivivere le pietre consumate dal fuoco dai mucchi di macerie?».

and saith before his brethren and the force of Samaria, yea, he saith, `What the weak Jews doing? are they left to themselves? do they sacrifice? do they complete in a day? do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish? -- and they burnt!'

3 T obiah l'Ammonita, che gli stava a fianco, disse: «Costruiscano pure! Ma se una volpe vi sale sopra, farà crollare il loro muro di pietra!».

And Tobiah the Ammonite by him and saith, `Also, that which they are building -- if a fox doth go up, then it hath broken down their stone wall.'

4 « Ascolta, o DIO nostro, perché siamo disprezzati! Fa' ricadere sul loro capo il loro vituperio e abbandonali al saccheggio in un paese di schiavitú!

Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5 N on coprire la loro iniquità e non permettere che il loro peccato sia cancellato davanti a te, perché ti hanno provocato ad ira davanti ai costruttori».

and do not cover over their iniquity, and their sin from before Thee let not be blotted out, for they have provoked to anger -- over-against those building.

6 N oi dunque ricostruimmo le mura che furono congiunte assieme fino a metà della loro altezza; il popolo aveva preso a cuore il lavoro.

And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined -- unto its half, and the people have a heart to work.

7 Q uando però Sanballat, Tobiah, gli Arabi, gli Ammoniti e gli Asdodei vennero a sapere che la riparazione delle mura di Gerusalemme, progrediva e che le brecce cominciavano a chiudersi, si adirarono grandemente,

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening hath gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,

8 e tutti assieme congiurarono di venire ad attaccare Gerusalemme e a crearvi disordini.

and they conspire, all of them together, to come in to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.

9 M a noi pregammo il nostro DIO e a causa di loro ponemmo contro di loro delle sentinelle di giorno e di notte.

And we pray unto our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.

10 Q uelli di Giuda però dicevano: «Le forze dei portatori di pesi vengono meno, e le macerie sono tante che noi non riusciremo a costruire le mura!».

And Judah saith, `The power of the burden-bearers hath become feeble, and the rubbish abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.'

11 I noltre i nostri avversari dicevano: «Essi non sapranno e non vedranno nulla, finché noi piomberemo in mezzo a loro e li uccideremo; cosí faremo cessare i lavori».

And our adversaries say, `They do not know, nor see, till that we come in to their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.'

12 M a quando i Giudei che dimoravano vicino a loro vennero per ben dieci volte a dirci: «Da qualsiasi parte vi volgerete, ci saranno addosso»,

And it cometh to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places whither ye return -- against us.

13 i o disposi uomini armati nei luoghi piú bassi dietro le mura; vi disposi il popolo per famiglie, con le loro spade, le loro lance e i loro archi.

And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, yea, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 D opo aver esaminato la cosa mi levai e dissi ai notabili, ai magistrati e al resto del popolo: «Non abbiate paura di loro! Ricordatevi del Signore grande e tremendo e combattete per i vostri fratelli, per i vostri figli e figlie, per le vostre mogli e per le vostre case!».

And I see, and rise up, and say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `Be not afraid of them; the Lord, the great and the fearful, remember ye, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.'

15 Q uando i nostri nemici seppero che eravamo informati della cosa e che DIO aveva fatto fallire il loro disegno, noi tutti tornammo alle mura, ciascuno al suo lavoro.

And it cometh to pass, when our enemies have heard that it hath been known to us, and God doth frustrate their counsel, and we turn back, all of us, unto the wall, each unto his work;

16 D a quel giorno, la metà dei miei servi si occupava dei lavori, mentre l'altra metà impugnava le lance, gli scudi, gli archi e indossava le corazze; i capi erano dietro tutta la casa di Giuda.

yea, it cometh to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads behind all the house of Judah.

17 Q uelli invece che costruivano le mura e quelli che portavano o caricavano i pesi, con una mano si occupavano dei lavori e con l'altra tenevano la loro arma.

The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those lading, with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.

18 T utti i costruttori, lavorando, portavano ciascuno la spada cinta ai fianchi, mentre il trombettiere stava accanto a me.

And the builders each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a trumpet beside me.

19 l o dissi allora ai notabili, ai magistrati e al resto del popolo: «Il lavoro è grande ed esteso, e noi siamo sparsi sulle mura, distanti l'uno dall'altro.

And I say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off one from another;

20 D ovunque udrete il suono della tromba, là raccoglietevi presso di noi; il nostro DIO combatterà per noi».

in the place that ye hear the voice of the trumpet thither ye are gathered unto us; our God doth fight for us.'

21 C osí proseguivamo il lavoro, mentre la metà degli uomini impugnava la lancia dallo spuntare dell'alba fino all'apparire delle stelle.

And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn till the coming forth of the stars.

22 N ello stesso tempo dissi pure al popolo: «Ciascuno di voi rimanga con il suo servo dentro Gerusalemme, per fare la guardia per noi di notte e lavorare poi di giorno».

Also, at that time I said to the people, `Let each with his servant lodge in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been to us by night a guard, and by day the work:'

23 C osí, né io né i miei fratelli né i miei servi né gli uomini di guardia che mi seguivano, ci toglievamo i vestiti; ma ognuno aveva la sua arma con acqua.

and there are none -- I and my brethren and my servants, the men of the guard who after me -- there are none of us putting off our garments, each his vessel of water.
