1 « Certamente c'è una miniera per l'argento, e un posto e si raffina l'oro.

Surely there is for silver a source, And a place for the gold they refine;

2 I l ferro viene estratto dal suolo, e la pietra fusa dà il rame.

Iron from the dust is taken, And the firm stone brass.

3 L 'uomo pone fine alle tenebre ed esplora i piú profondi recessi in cerca di pietre sepolte nell'oscurità e nell'ombra di morte.

An end hath he set to darkness, And to all perfection he is searching, A stone of darkness and death-shade.

4 P erfora un pozzo lontano dall'abitato, in posti dimenticati dai pedoni; sono sospesi e oscillano lontani dagli uomini.

A stream hath broken out from a sojourner, Those forgotten of the foot, They were low, from man they wandered.

5 Q uanto alla terra da essa viene il pane, ma di sotto è sconvolta come dal fuoco.

The earth! from it cometh forth bread, And its under-part is turned like fire.

6 L e sue pietre sono la dimora di zaffiri e contiene polvere d'oro.

A place of the sapphire its stones, And it hath dust of gold.

7 L 'uccello rapace non ne conosce il sentiero né l'ha mai scorto l'occhio del falco.

A path -- not known it hath a ravenous fowl, Nor scorched it hath an eye of the kite,

8 L e bestie feroci non l'hanno battuto e il leone non vi è mai passato.

Nor trodden it have the sons of pride, Not passed over it hath the fierce lion.

9 L 'uomo mette la mano sulla selce e rovescia dalle radici le montagne.

Against the flint he sent forth his hand, He overturned from the root mountains.

10 S cava gallerie nelle rocce, e il suo occhio vede tutto ciò che è prezioso.

Among rocks, brooks he hath cleaved, And every precious thing hath his eye seen.

11 O struisce corsi d'acqua perché non scorrano, e porta alla luce le cose nascoste.

From overflowing floods he hath bound, And the hidden thing bringeth out light.

12 M a dove si può trovare la sapienza, e dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?

And the wisdom -- whence is it found? And where this, the place of understanding?

13 L 'uomo non ne conosce il valore e non si trova sulla terra dei viventi.

Man hath not known its arrangement, Nor is it found in the land of the living.

14 L 'abisso dice: "Non è in me"; il mare dice: "Non sta presso di me"

The deep hath said, `It not in me,' And the sea hath said, `It is not with me.'

15 N on la si ottiene in cambio d'oro raffinato né la si compra a peso d'argento.

Gold is not given for it, Nor is silver weighed -- its price.

16 N on la si acquista con l'oro di Ofir, con l'onice prezioso o con lo zaffiro.

It is not valued with pure gold of Ophir, With precious onyx and sapphire,

17 L 'oro e il cristallo non la possono uguagliare né si scambia per vasi d'oro fino.

Not equal it do gold and crystal, Nor its exchange a vessel of fine gold.

18 I l corallo e il cristallo non meritano neppure di essere nominati; il valore della sapienza val piú delle perle.

Corals and pearl are not remembered, The acquisition of wisdom above rubies.

19 I l topazio di Etiopia non la può uguagliare e non può essere valutata con oro puro.

Not equal it doth the topaz of Cush, With pure gold it is not valued.

20 M a allora da dove viene la sapienza e dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?

And the wisdom -- whence doth it come? And where this, the place of understanding?

21 E ssa è nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, è celata agli uccelli del cielo.

It hath been hid from the eyes of all living. And from the fowl of the heavens It hath been hidden.

22 A baddon e la morte dicono: "Ne abbiamo sentito parlare con i nostri orecchi"

Destruction and death have said: `With our ears we have heard its fame.'

23 D IO solo ne conosce la via, egli solo sa dove si trovi,

God hath understood its way, And He hath known its place.

24 p erché egli osserva le estremità della terra e vede tutto ciò che è sotto i cieli.

For He to the ends of the earth doth look, Under the whole heavens He doth see,

25 Q uando stabilí il peso del vento e assegnò alle acque una misura,

To make for the wind a weight, And the waters He meted out in measure.

26 q uando fece una legge per la pioggia e una via al lampo dei tuoni,

In His making for the rain a limit, And a way for the brightness of the voices,

27 a llora la vide e la rivelò, la stabili e anche la investigò.

Then He hath seen and declareth it, He hath prepared it, and also searched it out,

28 E disse all'uomo: "Ecco, temere il Signore, questo è sapienza, e fuggire il male è intelligenza"».

And He saith to man: -- `Lo, fear of the Lord, that wisdom, And to turn from evil understanding.'
