1 Q uando tutti i re degli Amorei che erano di là dal Giordano verso ovest e tutti i re dei Cananei che erano presso il mare vennero a sapere che l'Eterno aveva prosciugato le acque del Giordano davanti ai figli d'Israele finché furono passati il loro cuore venne meno e non rimase piú in loro alcun coraggio di fronte ai figli d'Israele.

And it cometh to pass when all the kings of the Amorite which beyond the Jordan, towards the sea, and all the kings of the Canaanite which by the sea, hear how that Jehovah hath dried up the waters of the Jordan at the presence of the sons of Israel till their passing over, that their heart is melted, and there hath not been in them any more spirit because of the presence of the sons of Israel.

2 I n quel tempo l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Fatti dei coltelli di pietra e torna di nuovo a circoncidere i figli d'Israele».

At that time said Jehovah unto Joshua, `Make for thee knives of flint, and turn back, circumcise the sons of Israel a second time;'

3 C osì Giosuè si fece dei coltelli di pietra e circoncise i figli d'Israele sul colle di Haaraloth.

and Joshua maketh for him knives of flint, and circumciseth the sons of Israel at the height of the foreskins.

4 Q uesto fu il motivo per cui Giosuè li circoncise: tutto il popolo che era uscito dall'Egitto, i maschi, tutti gli uomini di guerra, erano morti nel deserto lungo la strada, dopo essere usciti dall'Egitto.

And this the thing which Joshua circumciseth: all the people who are coming out of Egypt, who are males, all the men of war have died in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out of Egypt,

5 M entre tutto il popolo uscito dall'Egitto era circonciso, tutto il popolo nato nel deserto, lungo la strada dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto, non era stato circonciso.

for all the people who are coming out were circumcised, and all the people who born in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out from Egypt, they have not circumcised;

6 I nfatti i figli d'Israele avevano camminato quarant'anni nel deserto finché tutto il popolo, cioè gi uomini di guerra che erano usciti dall'Egitto, furono distrutti, perché non avevano ubbidito alla voce dell'Eterno. Ad essi l'Eterno aveva giurato che non avrebbe fatto loro vedere il paese che aveva giurato ai loro padri di darci, un paese dove scorre latte e miele.

for forty years have the sons of Israel gone in the wilderness, till all the nation of the men of war who are coming out of Egypt, who hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah, to whom Jehovah hath sworn not to show them the land which Jehovah sware to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey, are consumed;

7 C osì Giosuè circoncise i loro figli, che Dio aveva suscitato al loro posto, perché erano incirconcisi, non essendo stati circoncisi lungo la strada.

and their sons He raised up in their stead, them hath Joshua circumcised, for they have been uncircumcised, for they have not circumcised them in the way.

8 Q uando si finì di circoncidere tutto il popolo, essi rimasero al loro posto nello accampamento, finché furono guariti.

And it cometh to pass when all the nation have completed to be circumcised, that they abide in their places in the camp till their recovering;

9 A llora l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho rimosso da voi il vituperio d'Egitto», e quel luogo fu chiamato Ghilgal fino a questo giorno.

and Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `To-day I have rolled the reproach of Egypt from off you;' and calleth the name of that place Gilgal unto this day.

10 I figli d'Israele si accamparono a Ghilgal e celebrarono la Pasqua il quattordicesimo giorno del mese, sull'imbrunire, nelle pianure di Gerico.

And the sons of Israel encamp in Gilgal, and make the passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho;

11 I l giorno dopo la Pasqua mangiarono dei prodotti del paese, pane azzimo e grano arrostito in quello stesso giorno.

and they eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow of the passover, unleavened things and roasted, in this self-same day;

12 I l giorno dopo che ebbero mangiato dei prodotti del paese, la manna cessò; così i figli d'Israele non ebbero piú manna, ma quell'anno mangiarono dei frutti del paese di Canaan.

and the manna doth cease on the morrow in their eating of the old corn of the land, and there hath been no more manna to the sons of Israel, and they eat of the increase of the land of Canaan in that year.

13 O r avvenne che, mentre Giosuè era presso Gerico, alzò gli occhi e guardò, ed ecco un uomo gli stava davanti, con in mano la sua spada sguainata. Giosuè gli andò incontro e gli disse: «Sei tu per noi o per i nostri nemici?».

And it cometh to pass in Joshua's being by Jericho, that he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, one standing over-against him, and his drawn sword in his hand, and Joshua goeth unto him, and saith to him, `Art thou for us or for our adversaries?'

14 E gli rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell'esercito dell'Eterno; arrivo in questo momento». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che cosa vuol dire il mio Signore al suo servo?».

And He saith, `No, for I Prince of Jehovah's host; now I have come;' and Joshua falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith to Him, `What is my Lord speaking unto His servant?'

15 I l capo dell'esercito dell'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Togliti i sandali dai piedi, perché il luogo dove stai è santo». E Giosuè fece così.

And the Prince of Jehovah's host saith unto Joshua, `Cast off thy shoe from off thy foot, for the place on which thou art standing is holy;' and Joshua doth so;
