1 Q uando Rachele vide che non dava figli a Giacobbe, diventò invidiosa di sua sorella e disse a Giacobbe: «Dammi dei figli altrimenti io muoio».

And Rachel seeth that she hath not borne to Jacob, and Rachel is envious of her sister, and saith unto Jacob, `Give me sons, and if there is none -- I die.'

2 G iacobbe si accese d'ira contro Rachele e disse: «Sto io forse al posto di DIO, che ti ha negato di avere figli?».

And Jacob's anger burneth against Rachel, and he saith, `Am I in stead of God who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'

3 E lla rispose: «Ecco la mia serva Bilhah; entra da lei, affinché ella partorisca sulle mie ginocchia; così per mezzo di lei potrò avere dei figli».

And she saith, `Lo, my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her, and she doth bear on my knees, and I am built up, even I, from her;'

4 C osì ella gli diede per moglie la propria serva Bilhah, e Giacobbe entrò da lei.

and she giveth to him Bilhah her maid-servant for a wife, and Jacob goeth in unto her;

5 E Bilhah concepì e partorì un figlio a Giacobbe.

and Bilhah conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son,

6 A llora Rachele disse: «DIO mi ha fatto giustizia; egli ha pure ascoltato la mia voce e mi ha dato un figlio». Perciò gli pose nome Dan.

and Rachel saith, `God hath decided for me, and also hath hearkened to my voice, and giveth to me a son;' therefore hath she called his name Dan.

7 P oi Bilhah, serva di Rachele, concepì nuovamente e partorì a Giacobbe un secondo figlio.

And Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant, conceiveth again, and beareth a second son to Jacob,

8 R achele allora disse: «Ho combattuto grandi lotte con mia sorella e ho vinto. Perciò lo chiamò Neftali.

and Rachel saith, `With wrestlings of God I have wrestled with my sister, yea, I have prevailed;' and she calleth his name Napthali.

9 O r Lea, vedendo che aveva cessato di avere figli, prese la sua serva Zilpah e la diede in moglie a Giacobbe.

And Leah seeth that she hath ceased from bearing, and she taketh Zilpah her maid-servant, and giveth her to Jacob for a wife;

10 C osì Zilpah, serva di Lea, partorì un figlio a Giacobbe.

and Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth to Jacob a son,

11 E Lea disse: «Che fortuna!». E lo chiamò Gad.

and Leah saith, `A troop is coming;' and she calleth his name Gad.

12 P oi Zilpah, serva di Lea, partorì a Giacobbe un secondo figlio.

And Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth a second son to Jacob,

13 E Lea disse: «Quanto sono felice! Poiché le donne mi chiameranno beata». Perciò gli pose nome Ascer.

and Leah saith, `Because of my happiness, for daughters have pronounced me happy;' and she calleth his name Asher.

14 A l tempo della mietitura del grano, Ruben uscì e trovò nei campi delle mandragore, e le portò a Lea sua madre. Allora Rachele disse a Lea: «Deh, dammi delle mandragore di tuo figlio!».

And Reuben goeth in the days of wheat-harvest, and findeth love-apples in the field, and bringeth them in unto Leah, his mother, and Rachel saith unto Leah, `Give to me, I pray thee, of the love-apples of thy son.'

15 E lla le rispose: «Ti pare poca cosa l'aver preso mio marito, che ora vuoi prendere anche le mandragore di mio figlio?». Rachele disse: «Ebbene, in compenso delle mandragore di tuo figlio, questa notte egli si coricherà con te».

And she saith to her, `Is thy taking my husband a little thing, that thou hast taken also the love-apples of my son?' and Rachel saith, `Therefore doth he lie with thee to-night, for thy son's love-apples.'

16 Q uando alla sera Giacobbe rientrò dai campi, Lea uscì a incontrarlo e gli disse: «Devi entrare da me, perché io ti ho accaparrato con le mandragore di mio figlio». Così, quella notte, egli si coricò con lei.

And Jacob cometh in from the field at evening; and Leah goeth to meet him, and saith, `Unto me dost thou come in, for hiring I have hired thee with my son's love-apples;' and he lieth with her during that night.

17 C osì DIO esaudì Lea, la quale concepì e partorì a Giacobbe un quinto figlio.

And God hearkeneth unto Leah, and she conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son, a fifth,

18 E d ella disse: «DIO mi ha dato la mia ricompensa, perché ho dato la mia serva a mio marito». E lo chiamò Issacar.

and Leah saith, `God hath given my hire, because I have given my maid-servant to my husband;' and she calleth his name Issachar.

19 P oi Lea concepì nuovamente, e partorì a Giacobbe un sesto figlio.

And conceive again doth Leah, and she beareth a sixth son to Jacob,

20 A llora Lea disse: «DIO mi ha dotata di una buona dote; questa volta mio marito abiterà con me, perché gli ho partorito sei figli». E gli pose nome Zabulon.

and Leah saith, `God hath endowed me -- a good dowry; this time doth my husband dwell with me, for I have borne to him six sons;' and she calleth his name Zebulun;

21 P oi partorì una figlia e la chiamò Dina.

and afterwards hath she born a daughter, and calleth her name Dinah.

22 D IO si ricordò anche di Rachele; e DIO la esaudì e la rese fruttifera;

And God remembereth Rachel, and God hearkeneth unto her, and openeth her womb,

23 c osì ella concepì e partorì un figlio, e disse: «DIO ha rimosso il mio disonore».

and she conceiveth and beareth a son, and saith, `God hath gathered up my reproach;'

24 E lo chiamò Giuseppe. dicendo: «L'Eterno mi aggiunga un altro figlio».

and she calleth his name Joseph, saying, `Jehovah is adding to me another son.'

25 D opo che Rachele ebbe partorito Giuseppe, Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Permettimi di partire, perché me ne vada a casa mia, nel mio paese.

And it cometh to pass, when Rachel hath borne Joseph, that Jacob saith unto Laban, `Send me away, and I go unto my place, and to my land;

26 D ammi le mie mogli e i miei figli, per cui ti ho servito e lasciami andare; poiché tu ben conosci il servizio che ti ho prestato».

give up my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and I go; for thou -- thou hast known my service which I have served thee.'

27 M a Labano gli disse: «Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, rimani, perché ho toccato con mano che l'Eterno mi ha benedetto per causa tua».

And Laban saith unto him, `If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes -- I have observed diligently that Jehovah doth bless me for thy sake.'

28 P oi disse: «Fissami il tuo salario e te lo darò».

He saith also, `Define thy hire to me, and I give.'

29 G iacobbe gli rispose: «Tu sai in che modo ti ho servito, e cosa sia accaduto al tuo bestiame nelle mie mani.

And he saith unto him, `Thou -- thou hast known that which I have served thee, and that which thy substance was with me;

30 P oiché quel che avevi prima che io venissi era poco. ma ora si è grandemente accresciuto; e l'Eterno ti ha benedetto dovunque io sono stato. Ma ora quando lavorerò anche per la mia casa?».

for little which thou hast had at my appearance, and it breaketh forth into a multitude, and Jehovah blesseth thee at my coming; and now, when do I make, I also, for mine own house?'

31 L abano disse: «Che cosa ti devo dare». Giacobbe rispose: «Non mi devi dare niente; se farai ciò che sto per dirti, rimarrò a pascolare le tue greggi e a prenderne cura.

And he saith, `What do I give to thee?' And Jacob saith, `Thou dost not give me anything; if thou do for me this thing, I turn back; I have delight; thy flock I watch;

32 P asserò quest'oggi in mezzo a tutte le tue greggi e metterò da parte tutti gli animali chiazzati e punteggiati e tutti quelli neri fra gli agnelli, e i capi chiazzati e punteggiati fra le capre. E questi animali saranno il mio salario.

I pass through all thy flock to-day to turn aside from thence every sheep speckled and spotted, and every brown sheep among the lambs, and speckled and spotted among the goats -- and it hath been my hire;

33 C osì d'ora in avanti sarà la mia onestà a rispondere davanti a te per me quando verrai a controllare il mio salario: ogni capo che non sarà chiazzato o punteggiato fra le capre e nero fra gli agnelli sarà considerato rubato, se si troverà presso di me».

and my righteousness hath answered for me in the day to come, when it cometh in for my hire before thy face; -- every one which is not speckled and spotted among goats, and brown among lambs -- it is stolen with me.'

34 L abano disse: «Bene, sia come tu dici!».

And Laban saith, `Lo, O that it were according to thy word;'

35 E quello stesso giorno mise da parte i capri striati e punteggiati e tutte le capre chiazzate e punteggiate, ogni capo in cui c'era del bianco e ogni capo nero fra le pecore e li affidò ai suoi figli.

and he turneth aside during that day the ring-straked and the spotted he-goats, and all the speckled and the spotted she-goats, every one that white in it, and every brown one among the lambs, and he giveth into the hand of his sons,

36 L abano frappose la distanza di tre giornate di cammino fra sé e Giacobbe; e Giacobbe pascolava il rimanente delle greggi di Labano.

and setteth a journey of three days between himself and Jacob; and Jacob is feeding the rest of the flock of Laban.

37 O r Giacobbe prese delle verghe verdi di pioppo, di mandorlo e di platano; vi fece delle scortecciature bianche, mettendo allo scoperto il bianco delle verghe.

And Jacob taketh to himself a rod of fresh poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut, and doth peel in them white peelings, making bare the white that on the rods,

38 P oi collocò le verghe che aveva scortecciate, in vista delle pecore nei trogoli, cioè negli abbeveratoi, dove le greggi venivano a bere; e gli animali entravano in calore quando venivano a bere.

and setteth up the rods which he hath peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (when the flock cometh in to drink), over-against the flock, that they may conceive in their coming in to drink;

39 C osì gli animali entravano in calore davanti alle verghe e figliavano agnelli striati, chiazzati e punteggiati.

and the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock beareth ring-straked, speckled, and spotted ones.

40 P oi Giacobbe metteva da parte questi agnelli e faceva volgere gli occhi delle greggi verso gli animali striati e tutti quelli di colore nero nel gregge di Labano. Egli si formò così delle greggi a parte, che non mise con le greggi di Labano.

And the lambs hath Jacob parted, and he putteth the face of the flock towards the ring-straked, also all the brown in the flock of Laban, and he setteth his own droves by themselves, and hath not set them near Laban's flock.

41 O r avveniva che tutte le volte che gli animali vigorosi del gregge entravano in calore, Giacobbe metteva le verghe nei trogoli in vista delle pecore, perché le pecore entrassero in calore vicino alle verghe;

And it hath come to pass whenever the strong ones of the flock conceive, that Jacob set the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, to cause them to conceive by the rods,

42 m a quando gli animali del gregge erano deboli, non ve le metteva; così gli agnelli deboli erano di Labano e i vigorosi di Giacobbe.

and when the flock is feeble, he doth not set; and the feeble ones have been Laban's, and the strong ones Jacob's.

43 I n questo modo egli diventò grandemente ricco ed ebbe un gran numero di greggi, serve, servi, cammelli e asini.

And the man increaseth very exceedingly, and hath many flocks, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.
